Caffeine and coffee are a daily part of life for most people in modern society. The discovery of the coffee bean is said to have been in Ethiopia, when a sleepy eyed goat herder noticed his goats eating red berries, he then noticed the effect it had on them as they jumped and danced around him. He then tasted the berries and his eyes opened wide, he took them to the local village who also liked it and in particular the monks who used the berries to keep them awake during meditation.
The most important part of the cup of coffee, the coffee beans, is typically harvested from South America, mainly because of the fact that Starbucks uses Arabica beans (Weinberg 1), which is dependent on a temperate climate that exists on the majority of the continent. The country that provides the biggest market supply of coffee beans for Starbucks is Brazil ...
Caffeine is the most popular and most widely used stimulant in the world. In Canada, the average person drinks 2.6 cups of coffee a day; that is equivalent to 949 cups of coffee a year. (Van Houtte) Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that improves ones attention, focus, and fatigue. When caffeine is ingested it causes your neurons to move at a faster rate, increasing alertness. (Fit Day) Caffeine also binds to the neural receptors, which blocks the adenosine, which prolongs tiredness. Caffeine is a white odorless powder that is most commonly found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and pops. Caffeine can also be considered and ergogenic aid. Ergogenic aids are external influences that enhance/ improves ones strength, endurance, reaction time and speed of recovery. (Healthline) The three theories that make caffeine an ergogenic aid during exercise is the effect it has on the central nervous system, skeletal muscles, and metabolic changes. (Sheila G. Dean) Caffeine also has a positive effect on an individual’s health, some positive effects include: reduces risk of developing liver cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s. Although coffee may be beneficial some ways, its side affects cannot be ignored. Consuming coffee immensely causes the stress hormone to release chemicals that tend to increase blood pressure, body's heart rate and tension levels. Coffee's mostly known for providing energy, but for many, the rush of adrenaline turns into feelings of "jittery tension" causing difficulty to relax. Another side effect that avid coffee drinkers face is lack of minerals in their body and diet. Coffee tends to affect the process of iron absorption in the stomach and most importantly in the kidneys; retaining important mineral such as magnesium, zinc, calcium and many others. Indulging coffee can also cause heartburn and acid reflex. Coffee causes a little muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. Once that muscle is relaxed, it is no longer tightly closed causing stomach contents to go back in the esophagus causing a burning feeling. (Dillan, 2013)
Starbucks founder Howard Schultz made it a point that in order to create the best brew, the best coffee beans were required. Starbucks utilizes only the highest of quality beans for their coffee products, which requires them to carry out a rigorous quality control process. Coffee beans vary in complexity and taste depending on where they are grown. Essentially, the harsher the environment the coffee is grown the better the over all taste. “Robusta beans are popular among some cheaper coffee distributors because they are grown in a more stable and predictable environment resulting in a cheaper price and taste” (Onward 83). Robusta beans have been domesticated, meaning they are “deliberately planted, protected, cared for, and used by humans” (The Human Mosaic 267) Arabica coffee beans are grown on steep mountains in high climates or in dry lands with intense heat. This stress produces b...

Coffee is the first thing that people associate with instant energy on a groggy morning. “In the U.S., coffee is king of beverages” (Reinke) Research has been done that has named coffee as an addiction to the people who consume large quantities of it. Coffee was named the top source of antioxidants. This is partly because of the amount consumed each day. Some of the antioxidants that coffee has are quinines and chlorogenic acid. It also contains trigonelline, an antibacterial compound. This is where coffee acquires its delicious aroma. Now let’s step back for a minute and just think about how much caffeine people consume. In an 8oz cup of coffee it has about 85 milligrams of caffeine. This is about double the amount that tea contains. Studies have shown that caffeine stimulates the brain and nervous system. This is where you get that energized feeling. After about the third cup, knees start to bounce, pens are clicking and people start running laps around the office. Caffeine can become addicting if you drink too much. Coffee can become that addictive habit people are unable to shake.

Innovative foods are coming out infused with coffee, and energy drinks are being pushed at every angle. Caffeine, to many, is a necessity to wake up in the morning and for others to stay up all night. This is dangerous because people are not only becoming more and more dependent on coffee drinks and energy drinks, but they are beginning to ingest more of it each day and are now mixing it with other drugs that can be life threatening. Proper knowledge is important when taking any drug, including one that the FDA considers to be a safe multi-purpose food substance, and education is the key. Caffeine (also known as Guaranine) is a plant-based alkaloid that operates as an insecticide when found in plants and a stimulant when ingested by humans.
Caffeine is a chemical found in coffee, tea, soft drinks and various easy to get foods and drinks. Like all drugs, caffeine has its good and bad side. It has been proven to prevent diseases and improve physical and mental ability. Fruits and vegetables also have tons of antioxidants but our bodies seem to absorb the most from coffee. Nutrients from the coffee bean are infused into the drink such as, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Manganese and Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin. These beneficial elements can help boost athletic performance, if taken at the right time before a workout. Caffeine increases the number of fatty acids in the bloodstream, which allows athletes' muscles to absorb and burn those fats for fuel, therefore saving the body's small reserves of carbohydrates for later on in the exercise. (Gunnars,
K.C. WILLSON p 4 ). Studies indicate that thanks to the country’s favorable ecological factors such as suitable altitude, optimum temperatures, appropriate planting materials, and fertile soil.). (Alemayehu p 6) , coffee grows in Ethiopia in several places at various altitudes ranging from 550-2750metrs above sea level. More than any other country, Ethiopia has abroad genetic diversity among its coffee verities. It is the center of origin and source of genetic diversity of the Arabica coffee plant to the world. Nine different coffee species are cultivated in the four region of Ethiopia, all with distinctive tastes, size, shapes and colors.
