Who Is Responsible For Okonkwo's Downfall

As human beings, we always want things to go our way. We want the perfect birthday party, the perfect prom night, and even a perfect life. Unfortunately, events cannot always occur as we want them to. For Okonkwo, the main character in the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, if events do not turn out as planned, he will not accept it and become agitated. While many events trigger Okonkwo’s anger throughout the novel, the main source of his anger and ultimate defeat is caused by the colonization of Umuofia by the British. The cultural collisions caused by the colonization take a toll on Okonkwo by forcing him to grow apart from his son, making him commit dangerous crimes, and eventually, causing Okonkwo to commit suicide. While there were many possible motives for his suicide, the most prominent was the fact that Okonkwo would never gain back his power that he lost while in exile. If it weren’t for Okonkwo accidentally killing a clansmen, he would have never been exiled by his unstable, altered culture. In addition to his loss of power, Okonkwo feels defeat once he realizes that his clansmen will never go to war against the British. These two claims eventually lead to Okonkwo’s final downfall; suicide. As a result of Okonkwo’s unwillingness to follow through with the colonization, his sense of identity was lost, as he himself could not begin to find it anymore. While most people of the Ibo culture remained quiet and followed through with the colonization, Okonkwo was very iron-willed and wanted everything done his way. In the end, things do in fact fall apart. People change and regimes become altered, all unable to be undone by others. Chinua Achebe portrays Okonkwo as a very vulnerable, yet invulnerable character both at the same time.
