Malinowski realized he wasn’t getting a full picture of native life from just interviewing the natives and not living with them. He wasn’t taking part in their daily lives. He realized he had to come down from the Veranda and actually go and live with the natives. 2. Where did Malinowski conduct research? The Island of Mailu, which was off the south coast of New Guinea, is where he did his early fieldwork. Then he went to the Trobriand Islands, which were off the eastern tip of New Guinea. His observations lead him to the conclusion that all aspects of social life were actually designed to serve basic human needs. Such as food, shelter, and reproduction. Serving those needs was the function of every social act and institution. This way of looking at things became known as functionalism. 4. What made Malinowski a “better” anthropologist than his predecessors? He was not so interested in how things had evolved (like his predecessors), he believed in looking at how society worked at the time it was being observed by the anthropologist. He focused on the here and now. He explored the biological aspects of marriage, the legal aspects, the economic aspects, the symbolic aspects. He wanted to understand and explore what was currently happening around him.

The article, “Native Reactions to the invasion of America”, is written by a well-known historian, James Axtell to inform the readers about the tragedy that took place in the Native American history. All through the article, Axtell summarizes the life of the Native Americans after Columbus acquainted America to the world. Axtell launches his essay by pointing out how Christopher Columbus’s image changed in the eyes of the public over the past century. In 1892, Columbus’s work and admirations overshadowed the tears and sorrows of the Native Americans. However, in 1992, Columbus’s undeserved limelight shifted to the Native Americans when the society rediscovered the history’s unheard voices and became much more evident about the horrific tragedy of the Natives Indians.
Throughout the story’s progression, Blackwood secretively becomes involved in a friendship and agreement with the Aboriginals who migrated to stay nearby ‘his’ home. Blackwood explains how they came to the agreement: “They come down, see… tell me to bugger off… [They] had their bloody spears up ready…give them some victuals. But they wasn’t having none… they let me stay. Made it real clear- stay on the beach,” (pg.215). Soon after Blackwood explains his confrontation with the Aboriginals, a voice called out from the lagoon. “[It was an Aboriginal woman, and] Blackwood was speaking in her own tongue. [Blackwood’s] words were slow and clumsy, but Thornhill could see the woman listening and understanding… I find them quiet and peaceable folk, Blackwood said,” (pp.216-7). This acceptance and hospitable relationship between Blackwood and the Aboriginals, shows the audience that Blackwood made the decision to make a comfortable relationship with the land owners. It is evident that Blackwood has changed his perspective on the Aboriginals through the contradiction of his confrontation, in which he uses words such as “bloody [and] bugger” to show that he did not feel welcome near or around them; and his agreement and “understanding” friendship in which words such as “peaceable” are used to show that they have a quiet, enjoyable relationship. In a desperate attempt to discover his true identity, the narrator decides to go back to Wisconsin. He was finally breaking free from captivity. The narrator was filling excitement and joy on his journey back home. He remembers every town and every stop. Additionally, he admires the natural beauty that fills the scenery. In contrast to the “beauty of captivity” (320), he felt on campus, this felt like freedom. No doubt, that the narrator is more in touch with nature and his Native American roots than the white civilized culture. Nevertheless, as he gets closer to home he feels afraid of not being accepted, he says “… afraid of being looked on as a stranger by my own people” (323). He felt like he would have to prove himself all over again, only this time it was to his own people. The closer the narrator got to his home, the happier he was feeling. “Everything seems to say, “Be happy! You are home now—you are free” (323). Although he felt as though he had found his true identity, he questioned it once more on the way to the lodge. The narrator thought, “If I am white I will not believe that story; if I am Indian, I will know that there is an old woman under the ice” (323). It is evident that the Native Americans were unfairly removed from their homeland because the Europeans settlers saw them as savages not worthy to live among them. The Native Americans responded to their cruelty with pleads of desperation. These pleads of desperation were annoyed and instead excuses of doing what’s “best” for them both proceeded.

In the novel, The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros describes the problems that Latino women face in a society that treats them as second class citizens. A society that is dominated by men, and a society that values women for what they look like, and not for what is on inside. In the review Jeanette, starts to state how the book was clearly written which I agree with the book itself is factual in so any ways but the book doesn't necessarily jump from one thing to another, it is focused on its topic and flows with the rest of the content. I also agree with the fact that Ms. Jeanette says that the book becomes dry and a little hard to read, I had some difficulty myself while reading this book. Ms. Jeanette also speaks about how she thought it was interesting that the memory of a child was questioned i believe that although the children had spent 14 months with the Natives I feel as though the child would have at least some sort of memory as to what happened to them and what troubles they had to live through, I do not believe that they just adapted to the tribal way of life and had no memory whatsoever of their past. Before the introduction of the “pale face” Native Americans lived a calm and serene life. They lived in big communities and help one another in order to survive. They had a form of religion, poly-theistic, that would be their main form of salvation. They had chiefs and warriors. They had teepees that would allow them to quickly pack up and move.
