In “Oedipus the King” Sophocles is trying to convey to his audience that while these exact events might not happen in real life, the way the characters feel and act do happen. Sophocles exaggerates and creates outrageous plot points to entertain his audience while still showing them the harsh realities of life. However, he tends to exaggerate more than stay true to real life so he can entertain. The purpose of his writing is to create a dramatic effect.
