Obesity is a major problem for multiple species across the states, cats, dogs and rabbits are going to surpass healthy ones in the next five years as pet obesity rates continue to increase through the country and the PDSA has warned about it, as stated on the spruce. With rabbits specifically, there is a high risk for obesity in domesticated rabbits due to the lack of knowledge on their specific nutritional needs. It is extremely important for pet owners to know common knowledge on their rabbit’s diets, what to look for if questioning obesity, what other health problems can come with obesity in pets, and how to handle them. Prevention is key, but managing the situation if too late is the second best option when caring for your loving obese …show more content…
A majority of pet owners choose to purchase gimmicks that pet stores show case due to looks rather than actual needs or requirements. Many pelleted feeds that are sold in big stores are designed and marketed for the human’s eye, rather than for the rabbit’s nutritional health needs. Owners see feed with colored pieces of dried vegetables and assume it is better for the pet compared to plain pellets, but this is not the case. A good portion of feed pieces are actually fried foods, which increase the amount of fat in the diet. (Ackerman) When discussing feed labels, the term “gourmet” usually means it’s a rich food that’s higher in fat, these types of feeds consumers need to beware as stated by Ackerman. It is important to know what is being fed to any species, including rabbits. Also, it is crucial to allow plenty of activity time due to the animal’s requirements to be hyper, they are way too often confined to a cage that lacks space to move their muscles or hop. This lack of energy release can lead to multiple problems for rabbits along with give them nothing to actually do but eat, sleep, and gain weight. Another major concern when discussing obesity in rabbits is coming to the conclusion that the rabbit is in fact over weight. If the rabbit is obese it means that it has more body fat than a healthy one …show more content…
Now bladder stones are hard concretions that are usually found in the urinary bladder, they have a definite shape and are a consistency of a chalky stone, as talked about in an article by Susan brown. “Most include some sort of calcium carbonate that can be found in the kidney collecting ducts or the ureters as well.” (Brown) Some cases, the stones will pass causing no harm, and in other they may get stuck in the urethra, which can block urine flow. Bladder sludge is a thickening of urine with the appearance of calcium salts in the urine that do not form into stones. Sludge can involve many different types of calcium salts, in which it does not flow as normal as liquid urine should.
Many people never find out that they have had stones in their kidneys. Some stones are small enough to flow through the kidney without ever causing any pain. These are called "silent stones"(Ford-Martin & Odle, 2005) Kidney stones cause problems when they get in the way of the normal flow of urine. They can block the flow through the ureter that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. “The kidney is not accustomed to experiencing any pressure. When pressure builds from backed-up urine, it causes hydronephrosis” (Ford-Martin & Odle, 2005). If the kidney is subjected to this pressure for a while, there may be damage to the fragile kidney structures. When the kidney stone is lodged further down the ureter, the backed-up urine may also cause the ureter to swell. Because the ureter is a musc...
Conforming to Melmed, Polonsky, Larsen & Kronenberg (2011) the waste products of the blood can form crystals which can collect inside the kidneys and aggregate to form stones. Normally the stones are composed of phosphate, oxalate, uric acid, and magnesium ammonium phosphate, single or combined. The type of stone is determined by the pathogenic mechanisms. When the stones are find in the bladder, ureters, renal tubules and collecting system they tend to be symptomatic. When the urine is oversaturated with the stones constituents the stones are formed. During the passage through the renal tubules the crystals aggregate into stones. In order to allow more time for growth the crystals anchor themselves to the renal tubular epithelium in the renal papillae and Randall’s plaques. The concentration of excreted ions is influenced by the diet. The intake of fluids can reduce the stone formation and growth. A reduction in the sodium int...
A kidney stone or crystal forms when the urine is supersaturated in regard to a stone forming material, meaning the urine contains a higher concentration of stone material than it can dissolve. There are several factors that can contribute to supersaturation, such as urine volume, pH, and the amount of solute excretion (Worcester and Coe 2009). There are numerous types of stones that can form depending on what material in the urine is in excess. The most common types of stones are calcium kidney stones with calcium oxalate (CaOx) causing 80% of all calcium stones and calcium phosphate (CaP) causing 15% of calcium stones (Sakhaee et al. 2012). Calcium oxalate stones are usually found in patients as white deposits on their papillae, or Randall’s plaques. The stone begins as a deposit of calciu...
Kidney stones, a very common urinary tract disorder that is now really rampant in humans especially. Some causes of kidney stones are still being argued from whether it is due to what is consumed or having a history in the family. There are some common kidney stones which are phosphate, oxalate and calcium. This kidney stones may vary in sizes, in other words if the kidney stones in one that is small then there is a less tendency to notice. Although, most people would notice when they starting filling pains that feel like cramps on the back and the side in area around the kidney or lower abdomen. Due to the blockage of urine by the insoluble salt this causing more concentrated urine.
This then further contributes to impaired insulin signalling and endothelial dysfunction (Radin, et al., 2009). Energy restriction through a nutritional plan has been associated with improved glucose tolerance (Freestone, et al., 1992 and Van Weyenberg, et al., 2008). Insulin resistance and obesity has become a lot more common in recreational breeds such as the Spanish Mustang, Morgan, Warmbloods but is still most commonly seen in pony breeds (Johnson, 2002; Irelanda, et al., 2013 and Carter, et al., 2009).... ... middle of paper ... ...

Obesity remains an extremely serious issue worldwide. Once considered a problem for wealthier counties, overweight and obesity are now dramatically increasing in low and middle income countries (WHO, 2011). In American, the rates of obesity continue to soar. CDC (2009) recognizes obesity as a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. According to NHANES over two-thirds of the US are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese (CDC, 2009). Treatment for this illness varies; it may include the incorporation of diet, exercise, behavior modification, medication, and surgery. Since there is no single cause of all overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat overweight and obesity that will help everyone (CDC, 2009).
A national epidemic is occurring, the war between food and people. In the United States, about “32% of children (from 2 to 19 years old) are obese” (Bernadac 1). As the years continue to go on the rate of obese children are increasing as well. In the past the problem did not have much consideration due to a low rate of affected children. Now families are suffering the long-term consequences of having an obese child. Some of those health effects are “Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis” (CDC 1). A problem with this type of drastic effects may have a solution; method prevention for the future generations and correct treatment for those who are already obese can lower the rate.
Obesity is a health problem which is growing very rapidly all over the world. Current health articles such as this one, are emphasizing the importance of diet and exercise, to keep a healthy body weight, and to avoid obesity and its consequences at all costs. It is extremely important to make sure one is maintaining a good body weight in order to avoid other complications later on in life.
Amongst one of the bigger health issues in United States children is obesity. Obesity is a condition in which a person has accumulated an excess amount of body fat that it has become detrimental to their health. To track this health professionals use the term “obese” when a person has a body mass index (BMI) of over 30. Although BMI should not be the only determining factor of whether or not you child is obese as it only takes into account of height and weight, it is one of the better known systems of telling whether or not a person is overweight or obese (Nichols). Obesity comes with a range of other health conditions that can include but are not limited to cancer, diabetes, and depression. Not only do children and teens who suffer from obesity acquire many health diseases, they also tend to get failing grades and are bullied amongst peers. Most Americans correlate being obese with having an unhealthy lifestyle, but according to a 2006 Fox News article there may be other factors that attribute to obesity that include smoking, medicine, pollution, technology and lack of sleep. (“10 Causes of Obesity Other Than Overeating”). One part that does although indeed play a role in to child obesity rates is economics.
First, obesity is to become widespread outbreak and its true magnitude can affect a large part of the American population. Feeding have become a problem affecting today's population is not an isolated issue that can be solved only with therapy, or soft treatments. The eating habits of a consumer society, lack of time to prepare balanced and healthy group of...
A urinary tract infection is a very common infection that can happen to anybody. A urinary tract infection usually occurs when bacteria enters the urethra and multiples in the urinary system. The Urinary tract includes the kidneys, the thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder (ureters), and the main tube that carries the urine from the bladder (urethra). Women, men, and children are all immune to this infection. Women have the highest chances of getting it. In the Urinary tract, the main links of the ureters help get rid of any bacteria that tries to enter the urine, and the bladder helps prevent urine from backing up into the kidneys.
It goes without saying that the United States is among the leading countries when it comes to obesity. People who are overweight tend to develop health complications such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, etc. (Roth, 2014, p. 275). Consequently, it is important that they improve their nutrients intake by controlling it.
“More than one third of America’s population is obese, which is about 35.4% including: men, women, and children” (www.cdc.gov). Unfortunately, this statistic is 100% true. America is hungry, constantly. This definitely shows that the land of liberty is growing in the midsection; no, not the Midwest, on the bellies of the people who live throughout the nation. America has a typical hierarchy of factors who rule the over the obese population. Junk food, lack of mobility, and undereducated knowledge of a healthy lifestyle, often contradict the fate of an obese person.
Obesity, also referred to as being overly overweight, is a condition caused when one eats excessive amounts of food leading to storing more calories than one burns. These calories are stored as fats1. Obesity can develop from several causes and is usually influenced by genetics.
