a. The FDA has decided to release a new Nutrition Facts label that holds multiple improvements and updates. The FDA believes that our society needs this new Nutrition Facts label because they feel that the new label will: be a refreshing change in the overall layout of the label, help consumers make smarter food choices, more clearly correlate food choices with chronic diseases, and demonstrate the significant scientific improvements made in nutrition. The FDA has changed parts of the design of the food label, bolding and increasing the font size of the “calories” and “serving size” sections. Researchers at McGill University found that the current Nutrition Facts label used in the U.S. and Canada was the least helpful out of the four labels that were studied. Researchers explained that the current U.S. and Canada Nutrition Facts label was too confusing for people to understand because most shoppers do not have a long time to analyze all of the nutrients listed in the current label. Therefore, McGill University said that the label was not helpful because it provided nutrition information but failed to give advice about the information provided to the shopper. McGill University researchers also studied the NuVal nutrition label and found that it was the most effective out of all four nutrition labels studied. The NuVal label provides the shopper with a single score—ranging from 1-100—that resembles how healthy that particular food is. It was found that the NuVal scores correlated with healthier choices in the supermarkets because the scores are easy to interpret quickly while shopping. The Traffic Light label that is used in the UK was found to be somewhat helpful by the researchers at McGill. The Traffic Light label did make it more difficult and more time consuming for customers to understand the label because customers had to compare multiple lights for each of the separate categories being highlighted by the traffic lights. Even though the label is very informative, shoppers are bombarded with a surplus of information which makes it hard for shoppers to compare foods and determine overall healthiness of an item. Some food items can contain many varying levels of categories of nutrition (e.g. fat, sugars, and fiber). The McGill University researchers found that the NuVal label was the most effective out of the four most commonly used Nutrition Labels in the world. NuVal keeps it very simple and does the work for the individual in terms of whether the food is healthy or not. Allows for easier comparisons between multiple food options. In addition, the label only provides information about the food without any advice or information about what the label is actually telling the shopper. The lack of an explanation compounds the already predominant confusion of the shopper because their simply just staring at facts about the food. Despite the improvements made to the new Nutrition Facts label, I believe that the label is still not perfect and will therefore need to be updated or even completely changed in order for the American public to really understand what they are
