a. The FDA has decided to release a new Nutrition Facts label that holds multiple improvements and updates. The FDA believes that our society needs this new Nutrition Facts label because they feel that the new label will: be a refreshing change in the overall layout of the label, help consumers make smarter food choices, more clearly correlate food choices with chronic diseases, and demonstrate the significant scientific improvements made in nutrition. The FDA has changed parts of the design of the food label, bolding and increasing the font size of the “calories” and “serving size” sections. Researchers at McGill University found that the current Nutrition Facts label used in the U.S. and Canada was the least helpful out of the four labels that were studied. Researchers explained that the current U.S. and Canada Nutrition Facts label was too confusing for people to understand because most shoppers do not have a long time to analyze all of the nutrients listed in the current label. Therefore, McGill University said that the label was not helpful because it provided nutrition information but failed to give advice about the information provided to the shopper. McGill University researchers also studied the NuVal nutrition label and found that it was the most effective out of all four nutrition labels studied. The NuVal label provides the shopper with a single score—ranging from 1-100—that resembles how healthy that particular food is. It was found that the NuVal scores correlated with healthier choices in the supermarkets because the scores are easy to interpret quickly while shopping. The Traffic Light label that is used in the UK was found to be somewhat helpful by the researchers at McGill. The Traffic Light label did make it more difficult and more time consuming for customers to understand the label because customers had to compare multiple lights for each of the separate categories being highlighted by the traffic lights. Even though the label is very informative, shoppers are bombarded with a surplus of information which makes it hard for shoppers to compare foods and determine overall healthiness of an item. Some food items can contain many varying levels of categories of nutrition (e.g. fat, sugars, and fiber). The McGill University researchers found that the NuVal label was the most effective out of the four most commonly used Nutrition Labels in the world. NuVal keeps it very simple and does the work for the individual in terms of whether the food is healthy or not. Allows for easier comparisons between multiple food options. In addition, the label only provides information about the food without any advice or information about what the label is actually telling the shopper. The lack of an explanation compounds the already predominant confusion of the shopper because their simply just staring at facts about the food. Despite the improvements made to the new Nutrition Facts label, I believe that the label is still not perfect and will therefore need to be updated or even completely changed in order for the American public to really understand what they are

The system, introduced two years ago, has a score out of 5 for packaged and processed goods (5 being the highest), considered ‘a quick way to compare the nutritional value of processed and packaged food’ and encouraging consumers to make healthier choices. Supporters of the health star system hoped it would encourage companies to make their food healthier, and this worked for some brands. Nutri-grain, for example, found that it had only 2 stars, primarily because a full third of it was sugar.
Restaurants have a greater possibility of getting more money if they have "special" nutritional labels. Many people dislike the food label, yet some people are for them. Labels would not benefit anyone because they are not always right, and they sometimes just want the state to give them As for their grade, yet it sometimes if negative to have new foods on the menu. A food has to be evaluated before put on the menu, therefore it would be even more complicated. The author proclaims, "But for the restaurant, it is a nuisance and a potential threat to their business. It means that before a new item goes on the menu, it has to be evaluated." You’ll see most people do not read the labels of the food they are buying. This is because they don’t care, it takes time and people nowadays are very busy. Like Berry said, “they buy what they want-or what they have been persuaded to want-within the limits of what they can get.” People are accustomed to buying what they have been taught to buy by their parents or caretakers as they were growing up. Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. However, if the FDA believes that their regulations are as specific as they can get, then there should be at least somebody to educate consumers about food labels and add more detail to nutritional value charts. Because without changing the way how information is provided and educating people, they will not be able to change their diets to improve nations overall health.
There once was a time where words like "light" and "low-fat" on food packages that had no nutritional meaning. As a result, shoppers were often led to believe they were buying products that were more helpful than they really were. Nutrition panels on labels were also confusing and hard to read. But the Australia New Zealand Authority (ANZFA) changed all that. In March 2001 the ANZFA defined new standardized terms that appear on food labels such as "low-fat", "reduced" and "lean" to control how food manufacturers could put their facts that are relevant to most of our dietary needs. This meaning that food labeling helps consumers to make the best possible food choice.

Since more people are becoming conscious of how nutrition affects health, they have come to rely on nutrition information to help them make healthier food decisions. Some sources of nutrition inforamtion that people may encounter are the inernet, product labels, friends and family. People receive most of their nutrition information from media sources like television, magazines, newspapers and books. One of the main benefits of menu labeling is giving consumer’s information directly to help them understand what exactly they are consuming. The average calorie intake for consumers is 1,800 to 2,000 per day. Even though consumers may not feel like they are eating too much, sometimes over half of the recommended calories will be consumed in just one meal. Menu labeling will allow consumers to track their calorie intake if restaurants will have the calories displayed on their menu. Most importantly, menu labeling focuses on the prevention of chronic diseases, which are typically related to obesity (Diets in Review). Daily, millions of people are perusing the grocery store, buying food for their families, completely unaware of what they are purchasing. A study on consumer research regarding food labels by the FDA found only a small percentage of people actually read the food labels and understand what they mean apart from only the calories and fat; ingredients are another story. “According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, about 61.5 percent reported using the nutrition facts panel when deciding to purchase food. Vitamins, a group of organic substances required in our diets in small amounts for growth and nutrition, are usually found in foodstuffs or taken as supplements. Yet vitamins probably present a wider gap between myth and reality in the layman's understanding than almost any other area of our diet. Surveys have found that while a majority of Americans do take vitamin supplements on a regular or occasional basis for reason of health concerns, there exists enormous confusion about the actual purpose and benefits of this practice ("Use of Vitamin and Mineral Supplements in the United States," 1990:161). Most people have a recognition that Vitamin C prevents scurvy, that Vitamin A is found in fish-liver oils, or that Vitamin D is found in dairy products; many people believe that Vitamin E preserves youth and prevents sterility, or that Vitamin C can present colds and cancer. Beyond this, however, there is still considerable ignorance and widespread myth.
On every food product there is a table of nutritional information that states the exact health contents of the food. There is also a list of ingredients that provides consumers with details regarding the food. In today’s times, consumers are flooded with choices of seemingly similar products. I do not know the difference in nutrition amongst these products. Food labelling is often misleading and deceptive, and I feel as if I have been left in the dark, but also that there is a hidden shadow side that may exist as consumers’ ignoracne may lead to naive incorrect choices.
