Time Management and Leadership in Nursing Time management is an essential component of working in the nursing profession. Nurses wear multiple hats in addressing the concerns of patients, handling paperwork, and responding to the requests of doctors. Without effectively balancing the demands of the practice, and understanding how to best prioritize tasks, there is a high risk of distraction, inefficiency and disorganization. These can each come at the expense of patients. Nursing professionals can improve upon their time management skills by assessing other qualities that have an impact on how they prioritize their time. These include one’s leadership style in terms of how they manage themselves, and others in the event that they are charged with a team leader role (Lansdown, 1988). There are varying leadership styles that nursing professionals can adopt to strengthen their management qualities. Recognition of these styles can also support nurses in their efforts to improve colleague and patient relationships that may prove challenging. Leadership styles may manifest in a variety of forms, and are typically directly correlated with the outcomes and attitudes demonstrated by staff members working together (Kiesewetter et al., 2013). It is important for nurses to be well organized and if leaders are strong in organization, the team will be as well. “Nurse leaders at every level and position must develop organizational and management skills, whether they are managing human, fiscal, policy, time, material or other resources” (Canadian Nurse Association, 2008, p. 9). “Exerting good management skills is part of being a good leader – and leadership skills are necessary for good management” (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008, p. 9). When nurses are able to organize their time, they are able to assess their patients thoroughly. Following these assessments, nurses are able to organize and prioritize which patient is in most need of assistance or immediate attention. If a leader is not well organized themselves, patient care may be affected. Practical Nurses like any other nurses need to have strong organizational skills, especially, if a practical nurse is working on a demanding, fast paced unit. Patient’s health and well-being depends on their ability to manage information and multi-task. It is easy to become overwhelmed and make mistakes if a practical nurse lacks in good organizational skills. Being well organized is even more important when working short staffed. The nursing career has a growing workforce, spurred on by the high demand for caregivers. The growing need for nurses has caused in influx of new nurses, graduating from school and ready to begin their career. Although there are many different work settings for nurses, one universal aspect of assisting new nurses is nursing leadership. Leaders within nursing are tasked with assisting new nurses as well as those who are veteran nurses, and their role is indispensible. “Health leaders model the behavior expected in the organization” (Ledlow & Stephens, 2018). Susan Eckert, the senior vice-president of nursing and chief nursing executive at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, is a prime example of a nursing leader.
Factors that impinge on the capacity to utilise effective leadership within clinical practice may extend to the lack of confidence or inexperience associated with new practitioners or graduate nurses. Other issues may extend to role confusion (Fealy, et al., 2011), isolation, poor resources of time/finances, high workloads (Peltzer, et al., 2015) and stress levels, which affect the ability to undertake stressful or challenging situations. Compassion fatigue or ‘burnout’ and vicarious trauma are common in nursing, potentially inhibiting the nurses’ ability to wholly engage with their role/patients and intradisciplinary/interdisciplinary teams (Weberg, 2010). Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
The method of leadership is almost as similar as management, and a leader can be a manager. “Both management and leadership are seen as positions of responsibility or accountability in an organization” (Edwards, Schedlitzki, Turnbull, & Gill, 2015). Leadership and management can relate and overlap within the roles and functions and are similar within one another in meaning. Together leadership and management direct the actions of a group or individually.
