Reflection This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program met my expectations because I feel that I have improved my knowledge, skills, and abilities during this program. This entail various leadership and educational roles for the DNP through research, reading assigned materials, and interaction with my classmates in the discussion board. Moreover, upon research I have more understanding that the DNP programs are preparing graduates to be able to practice at the highest level in multiple clinical settings, leading the way in the application and translation of disseminating successful research findings into practice. In doing so, it would help me assimilate applied scholarship and evaluate clinical outcomes of our patients. Furthermore, this would prepare me to address the critical skills needed to translate evidence-based care into practice, improve systems of care, and measure outcomes of patients. The education I would receive in this DNP program would open the doors to a world of opportunities in education and leadership roles. The problems that I have experienced in this program is balancing my time between work, family, and studying. Further, technology also played a role of frustration for me at times in navigating blackboard initially. However, some people love it and use it flawlessly every day, while others hate it and don't see why they need to be forced to use it at all. I am delighted in my career as a professional nurse and seeking the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) gives me the opportunity to expand my knowledge base in order to practice at a higher level, and obtain the terminal degree in my profession. My goal is to become an adult nurse practitioner, with primary focus to improve the practice of nursing. The Doctor of Nursing Practice will equip me with knowledge and skills needed to understand and appreciate research and facilitate the process of putting evidence into practice, with the overall goal of achieving improve patient safety, satisfaction and outcomes. Nursing, as a crucial part of the health care system, keeps evolving while dealing with an increasingly complex clinical situation that involves quality of patient care. Therefore, to successfully handle these scenarios, nursing needs to become more advanced, clinically and academically. A DNP degree is needed in this situation because according to Dunbar- Jacob, Navito & Khalil (2013), a DNP degree is considered to have more impact on nursing than a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree due to the advanced clinical education a DNP provides (p. 425). Hence, the DNP degree has an enormous impact in nursing practice especially in terms of improving clinical care, promoting leadership roles, and improving educational status.
The DNP embodies the convergence of the various practice doctorates in nursing and was adopted as the terminal practice degree in nursing by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in 2004 (Chism, 2016). Historically, nurses have been prepared at the doctoral level through a variety of degrees both outside of and within nursing. These various degrees include, but are not limited to, the doctor of education (EdD), DNS, DNSc, DrNP, ND, and PhDs in various fields of basic or applied sciences related to nursing.
The white paper entitled, The Doctor of Nursing Practice: Current Issues and Clarifying Recommendations was written and published by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The AACN Board of Directors formed a task force to review and clarify the evolution of the practice doctorate in nursing as outlined in the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (DNP Essentials). The nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with graduate education and advanced clinical training. The NP has acquired knowledge and clinical skills to diagnose and treat illness, and provide individualized, evidence-based care to a particular population (Chism, 2013). Throughout the past decades, the responsibilities of the NP have expanded and evolved due to the advances in healthcare. In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing. Furthermore, it has taught me about communicating effectively with patients, I have learnt about verbal communication such as paraphrasing when communicating with patients to ensure that what said is properly understood. I have learnt not to make assumptions about patients and putting them in the middle of their care, taking into account their preferences.
