By understanding nursing sensitive indicators nurses would be more able to utilize these indicators to provide the best possible care for patients. Nurse sensitive indicators are a variety of indicators which are shown to be directly impacted by nursing staff and are different than medical indicators (Sauls, 2013). Such indicators can be utilized by nurses to provide quality care for their patients by helping to guide their care by using evidence-based quality measures which have been standardized with the goal of optimal patient safety and outcomes being the first and foremost on the list.
In the scenario listed, if the nursing staff understood the nursing-sensitive indicators they would have been able to identify the different issues which
As a nurse we are responsible for the safety and overall health promotion of our patients. Competency in the nursing field is what ensures patient safety and decreased hospital acquired injury. Continued competence ensures that the nurse is able to perform efficiently and safely in a constantly changing environment. Nurses must continuously evaluate their level of skill and find where improvement needs to be made in order to keep up to date with the expected skill level set by their
When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
Over the past years, there has been a nursing shortage which has led to the need of more registered nurses in the hospital setting. This is the result of higher acuity of patient care and a decrease in their length of hospital stay. In order for the patients to get safe and quality care, the staffing, education and experience of the nursing staff needs to be made a priority. Because of the lack of nurses, patient quality of care has suffered.
With the help of NDNQI’s research and testing, hospitals have more successful patient outcomes and give a higher quality and safe care. Having been on the patient side as well as the medical professional side, it has shown how effective nurse sensitive indicators and HCAHPS are for both sides of the coin to standardize things for nurses as well as making sure our patients are properly and safely cared
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. It is the nursing process and critical thinking that separate the LPN from the unlicensed assistive personnel. Judgments are based
On November 17th, 2015 I had an observation clinical shadowing a Registered Nurse in Case Management. Case management is a side of nursing that is not brought up very often. We started off the shift in the nurse’s office. Morgan, the nurse, had a meeting to attend at 9:00am, so we stayed in her office to get organized for the day.
The nurse to patient ratio is unrealistic in many hospitals. In most cases it is almost impossible to give each patient the true amount of detailed care they really need. This is seen in most cases where there is one nurse assigned to 16 patients and each patient requires a different level of attention. Nurses are pressed for time, forcing them to cut corners, resulting in an increase in nosocomial infections and patient deaths. “The past decade has been a unsettled time for many US hospitals and practicing nu...
The nursing process is one of the most fundamental yet crucial aspects of the nursing profession. It guides patient care in a manner that creates an effective, safe, and health promoting process. The purpose and focus of this assessment paper is to detail the core aspects of the nursing process and creating nursing diagnoses for patients in a formal paper. The nursing process allows nurses to identify a patient’s health status, their current health problems, and also identify any potential health risks the patient may have. The nursing process is a broad assessment tool that can be applied to every patient but results in an individualized care plan tailored to the most important needs of the patient. The nurse can then implement this outcome oriented care plan and then evaluate and modify it to fit the patient’s progress (Taylor, C. R., Lillis, C., LeMone, P., & Lynn, P., 2011). The nursing process prioritizes care, creates safety checks so that essential assessments are not missing, and creates an organized routine, allowing nurses to be both efficient and responsible.
Nurses are responsible for the quality of the care that is provided. However, an inadequate nurse to patient ratio can damper the quality of care a nurse is able to provide if he or she has a bigger patient load than they should. The student nurse believes that adequate staffing is key to providing quality care and nurse retention. Inadequate staffing creates a safety issue for patients and drives more nurses to burnout. In her opinion, the student nurse feels that the best method of staffing is to look at the patient census and staff according to the ratio of nurse to patient. The student nurse’s feels that adequate staffing is accomplished when the nurse to patient ratio is low enough that nurses do not feel overwhelmed with their workload
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.
The roles and responsibilities of nurses vary based on the work settings. Nurses who are working in an acute care setting work with limited number of patients. They are responsible for the care and treatment of the patients once they accept the assignment. On the other hand, public health nursing is another specialty where nurses work with larger population within a community. The responsibilities of a public health nurse are comparatively more and different than other fields of nursing as they work to protect and support the health of the entire population. The agency that I was assigned to has a good learning environment for students who are interested in public health nursing. They are trying their best to provide children with the care they need such as preventative screening, treatment, diagnostic, treatment and follow-up. They work with a large number of children with health problems and their families. They also emphasize on the importance for the nurses to acquire unique knowledge, competencies and skills as they work within the population.
A nurse job goes far beyond performing physical assessments, giving medications, and entering patient findings and health information in a computer. Their responsibility of promoting the wellbeing involves many more aspects of care that seem to be ignored often. As a nursing student doing my clinical practicum, I have noticed that the patient-nurse ratio is one of the main reasons why nursing care today is not as perfect as it is expected to be. Such ratio forces nurses to give less priority to certain details of patient care that when frequently evaded can result in negative outcomes.
The registered nurse meets the standards of professional practice by communicating effectively in all areas of their practice. The nurse meets the guidelines mentioned in the former by not only assessing their own communication skills, but also by maintaining communication with the entire interdisciplinary team. Additionally, the registered nurse displays communication styles which embody care, respect, listening, authenticity, and trust to all patients. Overall, the registered nurse strives to not only meet all communication competencies, but also ensures to endeavor towards continuous improvement of their overall communication skills (American Nurses
I plan to observe a small group of LPN nurses. I want to observe them because this may or not be my future I am very interested in the way they act and how they came to do what they do. The girls I'll be observing mean a lot to me and with 1 in particular I have become extremely close. Brittany, Sam, and Jen all LPN nurses and all I'll get to see and observe weekly. I am interested in their home life as well as how they act in the workplace I plan to observe them in a variety of settings with different patients. The main one being Allison Rose, Allison is a student at mead high school with Rett's syndrome and she has some of the most beautiful eyes you will ever see. These nurses have truly inspired me and I am going to enjoy observing
