Impact of Surgical Nurse Practitioner on Power Distance There is a high power distance that exists within surgical teams between surgeons and nurses. The power distance creates problems in communication within the team. That miscommunication can place the patient’s health and wellbeing at risk. One small mistake during surgery can have extremely negative consequences. Through the implementation of a surgical nurse practitioner into the surgical team, the perceptions of a high power distance within the team should fade resulting in more effective communication. Firstly, Nurses must develop the right communication tools when dealing with their patients. For example most nurses do bedside reporting, before they change their shift in the morning, therefore they would be relaying information to the other nurse about the patient they dealt with during the night. The nurse that is going off shift would give a report to the incoming nurse in the presence of the patient. He or she has to discuss the condition of the patient, medications and the procedures so the next nurse would be on the same level. Most nurses in the General Hospital do their reporting by the bedside of their patients.

The term socialization as described by Wilkinson and Treas, states that socialization is the informal education that occurs as you move into your new profession (Wilkinson & Treas, 2011). Socialization into nursing is more than just being knowledgeable of the information and skills required to perform an outlined role. It also includes learning and adapting to the behaviors, norms, values, and perceptions of individuals within the same group or role (Wilkinson & Treas, 2011). I will give background information on Virginia Henderson and also explain the notable theory she has contributed to the world of nursing.
