Technology play a critical role in transforming the health care delivery system. As such, the utilization of electronic health records, EHR continues to increase. Nurses are the biggest users of the technology, which calls for a strategy to engage them in the EHR implementation and adoption. However, the implementation of such technology comes with a degree of uncertainty regarding the outcome of the innovation. The nurse facilitator should thus know that the implementation of EHRs affects nurses and their needs must be considered in the process. The nurse facilitator must ensure that they inform the nurses of the positive effects EHR will have on their workflow as well as communication to ease the transition. The nurse facilitator must strive to alleviate fear and frustration that may emanate as a result of implementing the new technology. Such would involve utilizing the five qualities Rogers (2003) identifies to assist with the upcoming innovation. The five qualities include trialability, compatibility, simplicity, observable results, and relative advantage. These qualities are useful in determining the attitudes nurses would have towards embracing the new technology. Regarding relative advantage, the nurse facilitator will ensure that all the nurses understand the benefits of the EHR system in improving the nursing practice in the hospital. It will also be crucial for the nurses to learn how the system will support the current situation. As such, the nurse facilitator will provide an illustration on how the working days will look like at the facility with innovation. However, the nurse facilitator will take the opportunity to dispel the claim that learning a new system is difficult and would result to job losses, which will avert any misinterpretations arising from implementing the new …show more content…
The facilitator should thus ensure that the nurses know that the new system is compatible with the hospital’s existing practices and values and only a few changes will occur. It would be crucial to create a perception of how the nurses will use shorter time to do the same tasks, such as patient documentation compared to the existing one. Therefore, the nurses will be better placed to comprehend how the new system will complement and align with the current practices. The facilitator must ensure that the nurses understand how the new system will adjust the speed of doing things in the facility to ensure improved patient care and outcome. The nurse facilitator will use the quality of trialability to allow the nurses to explore the new system’s capabilities. As such, one will provide the nurses with the opportunity to operate the EHR system to have them become more confident with dealing with the innovation. Rogers (2003) posits that the more an innovation is tried, the faster its adoption becomes. The trials will validate the benefits of implementing this system thus heightening its perception of value and any mitigate complexity
This article reviews the advantages of integrating into an EHR, the various standardized nursing terminologies currently in use and acknowledged by the American Nursing Association (ANA) which are CNC, NANDA, NIC, NOC, Omaha System, PNDS and SNOMED CT. The authors make a strong and valid point in their description of these terminologies, their integration into EHRs and how they are positively impacting nursing care, research, education and clinical practice as a whole.
The key stakeholders for this system change, and to help implement the strategy on providing new patient navigators would be the financial director, chief nursing officer, floor nurses, the hospitalists, and a group of patients and their family. Identifying the key stakeholders is important because with providing new services to a health care facility this group of people will be responsible for accepting the strategy to put in place which includes adding a new job title, approving the salary and the number of people to be hired, on down to how each navigator will be trained and oriented. Although the patients and their may not have much choice in the beginnings of the process of the system change, they can have a say and impact on helping in figuring out the role, and where there are gaps in the care during stays at the hospital, as well as helping in the interview process.

Many new technologies are being used in health organizations across the nations, which are being utilized to help improve the quality of health care. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) play a critical role in improving access, quality and efficiency of healthcare ("Electronic health records," 2014). In order to assist in expanding the use of EHR’s, in 2011 The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), instituted a EHR incentive program called the Meaningful use Program. This program was instituted to encourage and expand the use of the HER, by providing health professional and health organizations yearly incentive payments when they demonstrate meaningful use of the EHR ("Medicare and medicaid," 2014). The Meaningful use program will be explored including its’ implications for nurses, nursing, national policy, how the population health data relates to Meaningful use data collection in various stages and finally recommendations for beneficial improvement for patient outcomes and population health and more.
“An electronic health record (EHR) is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. EHRs are real-time, patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users.” (healthit.gov) The EHR mandate was created “to share information with other health care providers and organizations – such as laboratories, specialists, medical imaging facilities, pharmacies, emergency facilities, and school and workplace clinics – so they contain information from all clinicians involved in a patient’s care.” ("Providers & Professionals | HealthIT.gov", n.d., p. 1) The process has proved to be quite challenging for providers. As an incentive, the government began issuing payments to those providers who “meaningfully use certified electronic health record (EHR) technology.” (hhs.gov) There are three stages that providers must progress through in order to receive theses financial incentives. Stage one is the initial stage and is met with the creation and implementation of the HER in the business. Stage two “increases health information exchange between providers.” ("United States Department of Health and Human Services | HHS.gov", n.d., p. 1) Stage three will be the continuation and expansion of the “meaningful use objectives.” ("United States Department of Health and Human Services | HHS.gov", n.d., p. 1) The hospital, where I work, initiated the HER mandate many years ago. In this paper, I will discuss the progression and the challenges that my hospital encountered while implementing the EHR mandate.

She has been a nurse for over twenty years. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with the bachelors of Science in nursing and worked five years at St. Francis Hospital as a staff nurse on the cardiac floor. She then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she obtained her masters of science in advanced nurse practitioner at Chamberlain College. After ten years of service at the VA hospital as a nurse practitioner, she moved to Connecticut where she works as a nursing supervisor; she also held teaching positions at a few nursing schools, works at a doctor’s office and currently working on her doctoral degree. She is the nursing supervisor at my job for almost ten years. The job responsibilities include providing patient care as well as overseeing all nursing staff in the entire facility. Also, she ensures there are adequate nursing staff during the shift interacts with families and patients and works with other healthcare providers to solve any problems that arise during the shift.
