The brain’s way of healing: Discovery from neuroplasticity
It was once believed that the brain was too sophisticated and too complex, and that with evolution, it lost the ability to restore functions, repair itself or to preserve itself. Norman Doidge, a Canadian-born psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and also the author of “The Brain that Challenges itself”, and “The Brain’s Way of Healing”, came up with the discovery that the brain can change its structure and function in response to mental experience. This phenomenon is known as neuroplasticity, and he has, through his book, The Brain’s Way of Healing (2015), shows how neuroplasticity really heals and works.
It is primarily aimed at the patients who suffer from ailments like where people could have lost the ability to walk for years but have yet recovered through this method, or children with learning disorders, Parkinson’s disease etc. who can be treated through simple approaches. There are many cases where children suffering from autism, and other such illness of the like and the advent of neuroplasticity offers hope and recovery to these people and children.

The brain, unlike how we perceive, is not hardwired or programmed. Neuroplasticity acts as a ray of hope in challenging this old belief and extends our understanding of the healthy brain and human nature. The book brings out many case studies which deal with amazing and startling progress made by brain, whose conditions were dismissed as lost cases. Doidge also observes this changing brain to understand the phenomenon of sex, love, culture, education etc. This one is a truly inspiring book that will change the way you look at human possibility and gives you a deeper understanding of the workings of brain. More than everything it generates
Carr mentions the affect that technology has on the neurological processes of the brain. Plasticity is described as the brains response through neurological pathways through experiences. The brain regions “change with experience, circumstance, and need” (29). Brain plasticity also responds to experiences that cause damage to the nervous system. Carr explains that injuries in accidents “reveal how extensively the brain can reorganize itself” (29).I have heard stories in which amputees are said to have a reaction to their amputated limb; it is known as a phantom limb. These types of studies are instrumental in supporting the claim that the brain can be restructured. Carr asserts that the internet is restructuring our brains while citing the brain plasticity experiments and studies done by other scientists. I have experienced this because I feel like by brain has become accustomed to activities that I do on a regular basis. For example, I rarely realize that I am driving when coming to school because I am used to driving on a specific route.

New advancements in what scientists can do, such as Brain Imaging, Cognitive enhancement, pharmacological enhancement of mood, and brain machine interfaces and non-pharmacological enhancement must be carefully examined to determine their proper and ethical usage.

My love for neuroscience began long before my passion for neuroscience research. My favorite aspect of psychology since my initial encounter in Advanced Placement Psychology in high school is the nervous system and brain function in relation to behavior. It is fascinating how something so small serves such an extremely important and vital role in our body and behavior. The intriguing details of the brain fuel my desire to learn more about its functions. After completing the Biological Basis of Behavior and Neural System Courses at the University of Maryland, my knowledge as well as curiosity for the brain heightened.
As the human body goes through different experiences, the brain grows, develops, and changes according to the environmental situations it has been exposed to. Some of these factors include drugs, stress, hormones, diets, and sensory stimuli. [1] Neuroplasticity can be defined as the ability of the nervous system to respond to natural and abnormal stimuli experienced by the human body. The nervous system then reorganizes the brain’s structure and changes some of its function to theoretically repair itself by forming new neurons. [2] Neuroplasticity can occur during and in response to many different situations that occur throughout life. Some examples of these situations are learning, diseases, and going through therapy after an injury.
The documentary, “Amazing Secrets About the Human Brain” presented by the History Channel, explains how the brain works to people with little to no academic knowledge on the subject. The brain is “the most complicated device” humans have found, so it is certainly a topic of interest to many. In the past few years, knowledge of the brain has grown significantly. The documentary’s goal is to describe the complexity of the brain and how it influences various human behaviors, such as fear, sexual arousal, sports performance, and psychic mediums. With a minor shortcoming, the documentary does a sufficient job of introducing the complexity and workings of the brain to people with little knowledge of the topic.
