Student Athletes Student Athletes always have it easier! Athletes don’t have to work hard. Athletes are so lucky. Student athletes always have bad grades. Throughout high school I heard these statements often. Student athletes are no better than students that don’t do sports. Student athletes don’t get the “perks” that many people believe. Although student athletes are often recognized for their success in their sport, they are given no praise for success in the classroom. These students are also often perceived to be ignorant because of the stereotypical bias most people have against athletes. Every school has rules that an athlete must follow to participate. These rules include a specific GPA, and specific attendance guidelines. Athletes can be as competitive in the classroom, as they are in their sport. The conceptual underpinning of my research proved that although there are other contributing factors, students participating in athletics have a higher GPA. The personal benefit of sports can often be overlooked because there is no substantial data, but the friendships built from the athlete’s teammates and coaches have a large impact on the student’s performance on and off the field. A sports team can feel like a family outside of your family. There is responsibility, encouragement, and accountability you must take part in if you decide to join a team. Most coaches are found as a positive figure on today’s youth. Students should be influenced to engage in a school, athletic program. The time commitment has no comparison to the benefits of being involved on a sports team. The camaraderie and school pride gained is irreplaceable.
