Injuries are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. A case study was developed to measure national incidence, medical costs, and productivity losses of medically treated injuries using the most recent data available in the United States. The authors of this case study combined several data to estimate the incidence of fatal and non-fatal injuries in 2000. The results of this case study were surprising. More than 50 million Americans experienced a medically treated injury in 2000, resulting in lifetime costs of $406 billion; $80 billion for medical treatment and $326 billion for lost productivity (Corso, Finkelstein, Miller, Fiebelkorn, Zaloshnja, 2015). Males have a higher rate of injury than females. 44% of injuries are from
falls or being struck by/ against an object. Even though the rate of medically treated injuries declined by 20% for those aged 0-44 years, persons aged 75 or older experienced a 20% increase. Adding to this information, more fatal and nonfatal unintentional injuries occur in a home than any other place. The privilege walk was eye-opening. I have never played the game and I didn’t really know what to expect from it. It was surprising how in the beginning when we were in line, we were laughing and talking, but as soon as the questions started coming in, the mood of the room change and we were silent. I didn’t really move much, therefore I ended up in the middle. Privilege never crossed my mind growing up. My parents worked hard to give me what I needed and I never felt like I was missing anything. This exercise gave us an idea of how communities are made up different people that have their own challenges. I feel that privilege is something nobody has controlled of. I feel like this activity was a really good way to end this class. Reference Corso, P. , Finkelstein, E. , Miller, T. , Fiebelkorn, I. , & Zaloshnja, E. (2015). Throughout Rajiv Joseph’s play, Gruesome Playground Injuries, the two characters, Doug and Kayleen, sporadically meet throughout the course of 30 years due to injuries ranging from getting “beaten up pretty badly” (Joseph 31) to going into a “coma” (Joseph 27). The play starts out with the two characters first meeting in the school nurse’s office with injuries of their own. This is the start of a relationship that is full of pain and healing throughout the years. Told in a very unique structure of five year increments, the play shows how injuries, a reoccurring image that may be self-inflicted or inflicted upon one, bring the pair together when either is in a dire situation.
The first thing that one needs to consider is the situation that victims are normally under. No one chooses to be in an accident, it is something that is unexpected. Because of that those who are affected are often not at a point financially where they can handle the results of the accident such as lost time at work, medical bills, and other associated cost. Worsening the situation is the fact that the injuring party in the accident often does not want to compensate the victims for their actions. This results in an even
The current patient may be experiencing a range of traumatic injuries after his accident, the injuries that the paramedic will focus on are those that are most life threatening. These injuries include: a possible tension pneumothroax or a haemothorax, hypovolemic shock, a mild or stable pelvic fracture and tibia fibula fracture.

These crimes (Aggravated assault, Non-Negligent/Negligent Homicide) are serious crimes in America and throughout other countries, but in America you would face time in prison for the crime you committed. You have aggravated assault which is crime that it an attempt to cause serious bodily injury to another or it is consider purposely knowingly or recklessly harm to the value of a human life. “Little empirical data are available examining the injury experience of hired crop workers in the United States (US).”(Wang, Myers et al. 2011) Work-related injury data from a national survey collected through the National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS) in the years 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004 on 13,604 crop farm workers revealed that the bulk of injuries occurred to male (84%) and Mexican born (72%) workers. “The use of hand tools, falls, and lifting overex...
Violence: injuries that are the leading cause of death and disability for people aged 1 to 34 years in the United States. Violence is the threatened or actual use of physical force or power against another person, against oneself, or against a group or community, that either results in injury, death, or deprivation. Violence has become a national epidemic and a major public health issue. In a 1998 study by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, 64.8% of the 405 African Americans surveyed viewed domestic violence as one of the most serious issues facing their community. Approximately one in three African American women are abused by a husband or partner in the course of a lifetime. Of the women who die from domestic violence, 28% are African American. Many people agree that African Americans are one of the most violent races in America. But this is a racial stereotype; constructed beliefs that all members of the same race share given circumstances. Despite the perception that African Americans are prone to violence, those who took part in the Civil Rights Movement earned their equality through non- violent means.
Over 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries are reported each year. According to reports the leading cause of brain injuries are from falls followed by motor vehicle accidents, and accidents that were a result of being struck by something. Falls account for 32.5% of traumatic brain injuries in the United States. 50% of all child brain injuries are from falling. 61 % of all traumatic brain injuries among adults are 65 years old or older. Traumatic brain injuries are very violent blows or jolts to the head or body that result in the penetration of the skull. Mild traumatic brain injuries can cause brief dysfunction of the brain cells. Serious brain injuries can cause bleeding, bruising, physical damage to other parts of the body and torn tissues. Brain injuries are more prevalent with males rather than females. Causes of brain injuries include:
Imagine, if you can, an income drop from thirty thousand a year to less than ten thousand a year. This is calls for a colossal change in the way a person lives. What to sacrifice and what to consider as essential, becomes the main point of decision-making. The catalyst of this injury grew from pushing the body past the limit of physical readiness. This injury started a journey that is still in progress. Decisions, even small ones can bring about unexpected results. Look at how some decisions affected others and the results that came from them.
The United States alone is affected in a significant way. In the U.S., 1.7 million people are affected by some form of traumatic brain injury. Of those 1.7 million Americans; 250,000 people become hospitalized, 1.3 million people end up needing emergency medical care, 52,000 people die, and 124,000 people become disabled. (Rutland-Brown et al., 2006, Faul et al., 2000) Accidents that involve cars, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians account for half of all TBI's and are the leading cause in people 75 years old and younger when it comes to

Since much less has been written regarding the incidence of injuries, the associated risk factors and consequences, and the impact of injury prevention programs for pediatric patients more research is needed. Children present a unique challenge in injury care because they are so different from adults, anatomically, developmentally, physiologically and emotionally. Health care providers can do their best to prevent a pediatric patient from injury but that is not all. Education and standards are major factors, the lack of education and lack of standardized treatment for the pediatric population is detrimental to their health and injuries will only continue to occur. In 2012, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published the National Action Plan for Child Injury Prevention. It is an agenda to prevent injuries and promote the safety of children and adolescents in the Unites States. According to the CDC, "Every day in the United States, two dozen children die from an injury that was not intended". Injury deaths are only part of the picture. Each year, millions of children in the United States are injured and live with the consequences of those injuries. These children may face disability and chronic pain that limit their ability to perform age-appropriate everyday activities over their lifetime. Child injury prevention is achievable. Although the United States has seen declines in many injury causes over the past twenty-five years, more progress is needed.
Tennessee Williams once said that “Security is a kind of death.” This eye opening quote explains that even though confidence is important, sometimes over comfortability can be fatal, especially in extreme sports. Many athletes in extreme sports start to cut things closer and closer, or start taking less and less safety precautions all because they feel safe in an activity that is far from that. This quote claims that becoming over secure can have serious consequences, and there is no doubt that risk takers suffer from the brutal reality of this quote.
Accidents occur in the workplace but in secret. These most of the time lead to physical and mental injuries that might affect the worker way of living for the rest of their lives. It is estimated that more than 337 million workers get injured in their place of work or in the course of work every year leading to work-related diseases causing about 2.3 million deaths per year (United States Department of Labor, n.d.).
