The first speech I choose to critique was Cory’s speech on religion and creationism. He started off his speech strong by using Monroe’s outline and including an interesting hook to grab his audience’s attention. One strength I found through out his speech was, his use of the story of Noah’s Ark. Cory used this story to prove his argument that creationism is untrue. He did this by pointing out statements made the story of Noah’s Ark that contradicted one another, and go against the science of evolution. Another strength I found was, he had very good memorization. This allowed him to seem more credible to the audience; thus, making him more persuasive throughout his speech. Moreover, these strengths within Cory’s speech contributed to the audience’s
analysis of the content through the central route of persuasion. In addition to the strengths, Cory also portrayed a few weaknesses. One of his main weaknesses was that of powerless language. Cory depicted numerous hand motions, “ums”, and he paced rapidly throughout his speech. Utterances such as these caused Cory to develop a sense of nervousness and anxiety. As I began to analyze Cory through the peripheral route of persuasion, based off of his cues his credibility began to decrease. Cory lacked a strong visualization step in his speech, Seifert 2 which also counts as another weakness. Finally, his speech may have been more effective if he would have focused solely on evolution being right or by arguing that evolution should be the only thing taught in schools versus focusing on whether creationism if false or true. Moreover, Cory put together a well thought-out argumentation, and conveyed an excellent speech.
The speech I chose was Cal Ripken Jr.’s it was given at the Orioles home ball park, Camden Yards at his last home game before retiring. It is a special occasion speech and was given in front of over 48,000 fans. He used a tried and true opening sentence that although a little altered had a very familiar ring. He opened with “As a kid, I had this dream” a very loose but familiar take on MLK’s “I have a dream”. This was a great attention getter and probably had people on their feet immediately. This audience was already motivate to hear his speech so that was not an issue. Most of the fans were there for the purpose of hearing his retirement speech. He did not preview his points in the introduction he addressed those in the body of his speech one at a time. He did not try to establish credibility as he was speaking about himself so who knows more about him than himself.
Colin Powell speech was what you call a classic. Basically, he came from nowhere to rescue the honor of Howard University. He speech began with him calling the Black Muslim speaker ignorant. I think that opening statement set the tone of the whole speech. He let people know from the start that he wasn't about to put Howard into anymore trouble. The other part of the speech of the speech was telling the Howard graduates to go out in the word and get good jobs. This part of the speech was on the ordinary note. All people will go through this part of the speech. In my speech, I had that informational part also. You need to inform people on what is going on. If you don't have the informational part of the speech then you...
The debate team of Wiley College faced many colleges to be recognized and finally in the end winning a debate against the reigning debating champions, Harvard University. One of the debaters who caught my attention was James Farmer Jr., the youngest on the team that started out as an alternative. James Farmer sought recognition from adults and wanted to show everyone he was capable of debating. James Farmer incorporates a lot of Ethos and Pathos into his speech making, allowing him to leave his audience filled with emotions and in awe. Although James Farmer interested me, especially the way he presented his final speech, James Farmer and I are very different in the way we deliver our speeches.
Abraham Lincoln’s The Gettysburg Address and Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain are two important speeches that are remembered for their grand deliveries and detailed content. Both of these speeches are known for rallying their listeners but their message is vastly different. Additionally, the two speeches have made lasting impacts on the nation’s history, but each in opposing ways. The speeches set new standards in public speaking.
“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm”- Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill achieved success from failures, and he also achieved success through his speeches. His speeches are what contributed to his success during World War 2. His speeches follow the criteria of an effective speech. The criteria to critique a speech are to find the speech objectives, the audience and context of the speech, the speech content and structure, and analyzing the delivery skills and techniques. The speech objectives are to “educate, to motivate, to persuade, or to entertain” (Dlugan 1). The audience and context of a speech show “where and when the speech is being delivered” (Dlugan 1), and the features of the
In this essay, I will break down this passage from Antin’s book, The Promised Land, into its components. I will explain how those components fit together and discuss their possibilities of meaning. Antin’s discourse will be reviewed and the fit of this piece into her discourse will be evaluated. In doing these steps, it will put the meaning behind Antin’s words that the attempts of the Gentiles to break and convert the Jewish people of Russia brings them closer together and to God in the face of the tyranny of the Czar.
Over all this speech went relatively well but there is always room for improvement. I believe that the three most important aspects of this speech that I would need to improve and implement into my next speech would be the verbal citations, keeping my flashcards in order, and making sure that I plan out the time I need for my speech more carefully. I believe that improving these three things for my next speech would make a great
The only con I have is that the video could have been extended. I thought the speaker appeared to be intelligent while explaining the material, and he delivered the message very well to beginners. Lastly, the important aspects in delivering a good speech is engaging with your audience, breaking down the material for better understanding, and have
The speaker organized the presentation very well and made it easy to follow for the audience. She chose words that got the message across clearly and were not difficult to understand. Since this was targeted at a younger audience, she simplified the concepts and was very specific. The sentences of the speech were structured appropriately, and had no grammatical errors. She also included some transitions in between, especially when moving from one idea to the next which made the flow
The speaker did not seem to me to be successful. He brought a new idea to the audience with good reasoning behind it, but there was little motivation to apply in the day to day life. The audience is a class of college students who are interested in knowing what the speaker is passionate about.
The very best speeches are those that express challenging arguments through preconceived ideas relating to and beyond the time in which they were written. Anwar Sadat, the President of Egypt’s ‘Speech to the Israeli Knesset’ on 20th November 1997 and Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating’s ‘Redfern Speech’ delivered in Redfern Park on 10th December 1992 both share similar intents: to challenge and discuss relevant affairs that appeal to any audience, to reinforce predetermined beliefs, emphasizing national identity and to finally challenge the attended audience to synthesise ideas that may stir up norms within society.
Noah, reputably known as the builder of the Ark, the 1st wine drinker and the 10th and final of the Antediluvian Patriarchs. Not much is known about Noah origins other than his age which was said to be roughly 500 years old when 1st mentioned in Genesis 5:32. It is said that Noah was a blameless man that walked with God, but due to his righteousness he was disliked by his fellow man. After the great flood, God promised to Noah that never again would the he destroy all life on Earth using a flood also known as the Noahic covenant. Noah later became a husbandman, or small landowner, which is below that of a yeoman. There he planted a vineyard and eventually created wine. This led to Noah becoming a drunk and passing out in the nude. Noah’s son Ham happened upon Noah and told his brethren of the ordeal. Noah blamed Ham for his embarrassment and cursed Ham’s son, Canaan. The curse of Ham was that Canaan would be a servant under his uncle, Shem. It is said that Noah died at the ripe old age of 950 years old, nearly 350 years after the floods told about within Genesis. He ...
Language plays a very important role in the pig’s power. Due to the pigs being the smartest, language can be used to keep their power over the other animals. The pigs use their intelligence and language to manipulate the other animals on the farm. They would say “All animals are equal.”(11) but they know that they are superior due to their ability to manipulate the others through language. Squealer for example would use words that many animals would not understand to make the animals think being ruled by the pigs is a good thing. Through language the pigs are able to secure their position as leaders on the farm as well as get the animals working for less.
Achieving your childhood dreams is probably the best speech I’ve ever seen. The speech about Randy Pausch’s life really made me think about my life and how to achieve my childhood dreams and make an impact on the world. Randy started his speech un a very upbeat way telling everyone he was feeling well even though they all knew he only had a few months left to live. I was really surprised at how well he took the fact that he was about to die because he knew that he had lived a good life and he wanted to share the secrets of how he did it. Randy started out by stating he had a good childhood which is very important because people who often have bad or troubling childhoods always have problems even when they become adults. This goes on to show
The use of the powerpoint slides really contributed to the speech because, the audience could easily follow along throughout the speech without difficulty. I also think that incorporating the videos that went along...
