Usher is paying tribute to one of the most outstanding legends in music, Nina Simone, and he has redone her 1958 song titled “My Baby Just Cares For Me.” This is off a compilation album titled “Nina Revisited…A Tribute to Nina Simone” which will be released on July 10th.
Nina Simone was a song writer, a singer, pianist and an activist. She is one of the most diverse musicians in history as she is an artist that was not specific to any genre. She did jazz, blues, R&B, folk, pop, gospel and classical music as a classical pianist. She recorded a lot of music which can be described as very deep, creative, educative and she touched lives with her message as she used her music to and change America and the world.
Do you love a pure RnB unpolluted sound? Do you love to hear an RnB song that takes your mind and helps you relax while enjoying the message being delivered? Then this is the right song for you. This is that RnB sound that is missing from the ever evolving music industry now. Not all evolutions are good, some make changes we accept but make us forget the good in the original thing. Usher is here to remind of what the unspoiled RnB sound sounds like as he does an amazing job on this cover of a great song.

It also flows on a tempo that is absolutely solacing especially when you allow the lyrics to penetrate and go with that tempo. There is a mildly played piano and strings that also join all the above components to give the song that pure RnB sound that impressively reminds you of the original song by Nina Simone. All these collectively give a resplendent sound that captures your heart, soul and fingers as they tap that repeat
You can see her influence in most of today’s art. I grew up on Janet’s music and I simply love each era of her work. To me, Janet is more than a singer, she is a true artist.
It is also the piece that had enough of an effect to make the evil man go away, in the film, Fantasia. My strongest reaction to this piece, is the warm and chilled feeling I get hearing it. The idea of developing “chilled” bones from music is amazing. I arrived at this certain place, by truly diving into the song. I really listened to it, and could hear the seriousness in the singer’s voice. I could hear and understand the passion that the musicians felt when they pressed the piano’s keyboards. The singing, along with the instruments complimenting, is astonishing. I caught myself listening to this piece during the interview, and I could imagine even an evil monster falling in love with this tune enough to turn good. I felt the drama and power in the singing, and the seriousness in the playing of the
...ng to this day, she is one of few who could compete with the men of hip-hop, but she never pretended to be anything but a woman. She not only sang about female empowerment, but she wrote about being a woman from the insecurities that we as women sometimes feel to the nirvana of being in love. Sensuality and femininity were always as important to her which was her strength, and message to get out to women especially those of color.
Not only a great singer, she taught herself how to play the guitar and the harp, and
In 1980, Whitney Houston was 16 years old and discovered by a New York modeling management. Her fashion photos appeared in the magazines Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Young Miss, and Mademoiselle. While Whitney was struggling with many different things, she continued to further her career in acting. She starred in many famous films such as “The Bodyguard”, which uncovered her signature song “I Will Always Love You” at the end of the movie. Whitney also starred in,“Waiting to Exhale”, “The Preacher’s Wife”, “Cinderella”, and “Sparkle”. The soundtrack for each film arised her music career and generated hit singles for her. Not only was Whitney Houston a great singer, she was very talented in many other different
According to Ruth Feldstein “Nina Simone recast black activism in the 1960’s.” Feldstein goes on to say that “Simone was known to have supported the struggle for black freedom in the United States much earlier, and in a more outspoken manner around the world than many other African American entertainers.” Her family ties to the south, her unique talent, her ability to travel and make money are similar to the Blues women movement that preceded her. It can be said that Nina Simone goes a step further the by directly attacking inequities pertaining to race and gender in her music. However, what distinguishes her is her unique musicianship and that is what ultimately garners her massive exposure and experiences over those of her past contemporaries.
Known as the “Empress Of Blues”, Bessie Smith was said to have revolutionized the vocal end of Blues Music. She showed a lot of pride as an independent African-American woman. Her style in performance and lyrics often reflected her lifestyle. Bessie Smith was one of the first female jazz artists, and she paved the way for many musicians who followed.
To commerate Black History Month, I have decided to do reasearch on an exceptionally talented musician Ella Fitzgerald. She was essentially the Aretha Franklin of the Jazz Age. She was an incredibly talented jazz singer who was considered the best by almost everyone. The reason she’s been chosen as today’s Black History Month is because she holds the distinction of being the first Grammy Award Winner who was both Black and female. Ella Fitzgerald had an everlasting impact on, not only how jazz music sounded, but also who performed it. When looking at a compulsive life as Ella’s, I was inspired by the huge impact she brought throught out music; especially jazz.
It is believed to be one of her best pop songs. This song is considered a pop song because it is written in the form of verses, bridges and choruses and it ends with an outro. The first verse of the song starts with “Share my life, take me for what I am”, which is shown specifically at the time 0:23. It ends with “Just all that you are and everything that you do”, which is shown at 0:53-0:58. The verse is followed with a bridge, which begins with “I don’t really need to look, very much further”, specifically at 1:00, and then follows it and it ends with “I can’t run from myself, there’s nowhere to hide” which is from 1:15 to 1:20. The song’s structure continues with a chorus, which starts off with “Don’t make me close one more door” which is at 1:21, and then it follows and ends with “If I don’t have you, you, you, you, you” which is at 1:51 to 1:56. It carries on with one more verse and one more bridge, and it ends with an outro, which begins with “Don’t you dare walk away from me” which is at 4:12 and ends with “If I don’t have you, oh you” which is at 4:27. The exact times for each verse, chorus, bridge or outro is all shown in the table below. In addition, the song is considered a pop song because it’s time duration is within the average time for a pop song, which is 3 to 5 minutes, and the song is about 4:50 minutes. Moreover, it is appropriate for different people from different places and it
Personally one of my favorite artists of all time, Billie Holiday, is known to be a true artist known in American pop and jazz history. She lived an emotional and challenging life, with plenty of stories to tell and enough sorrow to fill a songbook. Holiday sang with incredible profundity, sophistication, and her unique vocals is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time.
My impressions of this song is that it’s a good remix of their African roots and more modern pop. The whole song has a nice melody effected by African rhythms which really match Nico and Vinz’s voices. I have heard the song far to often but I still think it’s a good song.
Whitney Houston is considered one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin, and Aretha Franklin is her godmother.
The overlaying form of the tune is relatively standard compared to a lot of the Big Band era tunes. However, it is the slight adjustments and additions that make it interesting and engaging for listeners beyond the different harmonic and instrumental ideas. For instance, the song follows an AABA form, however, there are feel changes and timbre shifts that differentiate it from other jazz songs that had previously been released. For instance, each A section starts in the latin/afro-cuban style. There is an intro as well that starts with an ostinato bass pattern that outlines the two alternating chords of the A section that carries throughout the A section (Thomas). There is a strong presence of layers in this song: on top of the bass, there is the latin/afro-cuban drum groove along with a saxophone effect that has small, stepwise motion. The next layer in the A section features a solo trombone that plays a mellow sounding legato line that is responded to by the trumpet section with a strong interjection every two bars. This continues for 14 bars and at the end of the A section there is a two bar change where the band moves from the latin/afro-cuban feel into a very straight ahead swing feel. At the end of the first A section, there is a very brash and harsh trumpet interjection where the trumpet plays a higher and lower note back and forth three times. The general layers of the bass,
In her description, she was nothing but a mass of shaking nervousness. However, once she started singing, all the shaking halted and a voice was heard that changed the world in just a matter of time. Rihanna in her childhood was inspired by Bob Marley, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. This reflected most in her very first single “Pon de Replay”, which was a reggae inspired dance track, immediately hitting the top 2 on the Billboard Singles Chart. The song not only reached second place but also shout out to the world: Rihanna is coming!
he has rhythm. I think the lyrics to the song are quite a strong point
