These are the opening lines to the famous NWA’s “Niggaz 4 Life”. The opening dialogue consists of people complaining of their use of the word nigga, asking why they have to use it. They give several reasons: because of how often police harass them, because it fits in with the rest of their language, because they will always be black, because “it’s just the way shit has to be”, and later in the same album, because of their pasts. My personal take on the n-word as a person of the African-American community is that it is overused and, quite frankly, normalizing it. If you always use the word, it becomes a part of your vocabulary and eventually you and the people around you will accept it, get used to it, and deem it as okay to use. The word itself is racist, so essentially by using it, you are being racist. So, theoretically, you have grown accustomed to using a racist word, making you at the moment a racist. Meaning that you have normalized being a racist for yourself and the people around you. If you cannot see what is wrong with that, I don’t think you’ll ever get it. Some people choose to think that nigger is not a racist term. However, it was used to suppress and belittle the African American people for centuries. Which makes it racist. The literal definition of racism is to suppress or think less of someone based on their race. As Senya Hawkins said in “The Weight of the Word”, “Nigger is a word that is beneath redemption. It cannot be made into a good or neutral word as long as the ringing of the perpetual drumbeat of white supremacy echoes when it is spoken and heard.” This is how I view the word as well.
