Nietzsche divides half of the humanity into slave morality which sets the virtues for slaves to exist. Christianity is the morals a slave has which are shown as a weakness. The qualities a leader has, can cause a slave to undermine the harm given to them. Slave morality does not give one, the ability to think for themselves. Those who support slave morality believe in the aspect of good and evil. The good represents the sacrifice one took for others and bad represents the lower value of what was taken away from this utility. In Nietzsche’s Genealogy, he showed many flaws from each section about slave morality. His problem was that he wanted to show a hierarchy that allowed one to be followed by a leader. He quotes, “To demand of strength that is not express itself as strength, that is not the desire to overwhelm, a desire to cast down, a desire to become lord, a thirst for enemies, resistance and triumphs, is just as nonsensical as to demand of weakness they is express itself as strength.” (Nietzsche, essay 1 sec. 13). Nietzsche wants slave morality to be gone because it leads the humanity to become less strong than they were. The slave’s ressentiment is not the main problem for Nietzsche, but when the masters are transitioned into thinking into the morality of slaves, than a problem lies. He mentions how slave’s revolt was driven by the feeling of ressentiment which was the feeling of revenge of the weak. Nietzsche writes an example of this between a bird and a lamb, where the bird eats a lamb and this is considered to be evil. In section 13 Nietzsche quotes, “ These birds of prey are evil; and whoever is as little as possible a bird of prey but rather its opposite, a lamb,- isn’t he good.” (Nietzsche, essay 1 sec. 13). This is to show how lambs are already weak which symbolizes the slaves and the birds show how they are strong just like their masters. Since the lambs already see themselves are weak, calling the birds evil is seen to be wrong. Nietzsche see’s the slaves as a result of morality which turns into a reactive concept. This is because slaves react against the power which is seen as a problem. This is where good and evil show up as a weakness. Nietzsche said to take away any of these problems, one can take revenge as long as its quick and if this happens, one needs to forget and forgive at the end but Nietzsche is worried that turning one evil will take away from their interests in
“...this religion is saying that every person, man, woman, child, slave, barbarian, no matter who, is made in the image of God and is therefore of enormous value in the eyes of God…”(Document C). “Now the Christian community, as we have it particularly in the letters of Paul, … says in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither male or female, neither slave nor free… . Here is a community that invites you, which makes you an equal with all other members of that community,” (Document D). This was beneficial to a wide range of people, especially peasants because they could have a part in society and be equal to their Christian peers.
The next appeal that he uses in his speech is pathos which appeals to emotions. Evidence that I found from this text is, “…less than a question of freedom of slavery” (line 10). This explains that he thinks about being a slave, and it’s showing his emotions towards that thought. Another piece of evidence is whenever the text says, “we are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth…till she transforms us into beasts”
However, Nietzsche’s idea of the powerful forcing their will on common people resonates with me. It is something we see in our modern society, wealthy people seem to have a higher influence over the average American. Examples of powerful people controlling others are found in politics, economy, media, and religion. Common people are lead to think in certain ways that the powerful need them to. Nietzsche said that people will only be equal as long as they are equal in force and talent, people who have a higher social group are more influential in decisions because average people look to them for information. Slave-owners forced a perverse form of Christianity, one that condoned slavery, upon slaves. According to this false Christianity the enslavement of “black Africans is justified because they are the descendants of Ham, one of Noah's sons; in one Biblical story, Noah cursed Ham's descendants to be slaves” (Tolson 272). In his narrative, Frederick Douglass shows how Christianity was used as a major justification for slavery and for the actions of slave masters, but he also shows how the religion provided hope for slaves themselves. In an appendix added at the end of the narrative, he draws a distinction between “the Christianity of this land” and “the Christianity of Christ,” saying that there is the “widest possible difference” between them. As he puts it, “I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ: I therefore hate the corrupt, slaveholding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land.” In other words, Douglass thinks that Christianity has been corrupted in America, where people hypocritically use it to justify their injustices.
Lastly both Frankenstein's monster and Roy Baty state what it means to be a slave, one to his envy and rage, and the other to a human race that spurns him. "..but I was the slave, not the master, of an impulse, which I detested, yet could not disobey...Evil thence forth became my good."

He must be able to detect no inconsistencies in slavery; he must be made to feel that slavery is right, and he can be brought to that only when he ceases to be a man.* (315)
The Frederick Douglass text is an excellent and personal account of slavery. It was compelling to read and follow the different changes in his life throughout his time as a slave with different masters. The text significantly articulated the experiences that made Douglass the man that he was. In looking at his life and the way that he expressed this trough writing provided a unique view of the harmful effects of this cruel bondage on whites as well as blacks. It was apparent that Douglass had a purpose, which he served extremely well, in writing his life story. The insight that was gained from reading it was so overwhelming that one can see why it made such an impact upon its original circulation. I was touched in reading the text, as it is a history that very much interests me. The tribulations that Douglass endured and witnessed were so real that in reading them one can almost imagine seeing the images that were described. In his graphic detail and description Dogulass succeeds in maintaining not only an interest but also a concern, sincere emotion that cannot be denied upon experiencing his words. The explanations for certain occurrences by the slaves were helpful and also an aid in evoking emotion. I felt pity and anger as Douglass provided examples of the way that slaves would argue and even fight about whom had the best or smartest master. In writing his autobiography he not only allowed raeders to explore his trial as a slave but also provided an undersating the system itself pertaining to its operation and evaluation thereof. An example of this is the description of what was looked down upon by both slaves as well as whites such as not giving a slave enough to eat. The reading was very interesting but heart-wrenching, though sympathy was not a goal for the fervent author.
When we talked about Nietzsche in class we discussed how a lot about the second essay, which is about Guilt and Punishment. Here are two quick overviews of what Nietzsche describes punishment and guilt as. Guilt is being accountable and responsible for the action you have done. You have guilt because you could have done something in the right direction instead. Nietzsche says that if free will is attached to accountability and responsibility then it cannot be connect with guilt. It is based off a debt that you have acquired and needs to be paid back. Punishment is dependent on the offender’s decision to act the way that they do. The reason this person deserves a punishment is because they have the ability to act differently off the start, they chose to act in the wrong and they have to take the punishment they get. Nietzsche says that if someone is not acting freely (accident, insanity, etc.) then they are seen as being exempt from punishment.
Douglass's narrative is, on one surface, intended to show the barbarity and injustice of slavery. However, the underlying argument is that freedom is not simply attained through a physical escape from forced labor, but through a mental liberation from the attitude created by Southern slavery. The slaves of the South were psychologically oppressed by the slaveholders' disrespect for a slave’s family and for their education, as well as by the slaves' acceptance of their own subordination. Additionally, the slaveholders were trapped by a mentality that allowed them to justify behavior towards human beings that would normally not be acceptable. In this manner, both slaveholder and slave are corrupted by slavery.
While critical of the attitude found in the ressentiment of slave morality, Nietzsche’s includes it as an important factor contributing to the bad conscience of man. Even though Nietzsche dislikes the negative results of bad conscience – man’s suppression of his instincts, hate for himself, and stagnation of his will -- Nietzsche does value it for the promise it holds. Nietzsche foresees a time coming when man conquers his inner battle and regains his “instinct of freedom.” In anticipation of that day’s eventual arrival, Nietzsche views the development of bad conscience as a necessary step in man’s transformation into the “sovereign individual.”
I also think that the difference between the two types of moralities mentioned in the text book by Nietzsche are that the master morality makes its personal values and stands beyond good and evil, whereas, slave morality values kind-heartedness, meekness, and compassion. The master exceeds the weakness of the ordinary individual. Dylan, I do agree with you that in the long time you find yourself with more master morality and some slave molarity as well. As for me I would say I am a mixture of the two because under slave morality I hold to the standard that are advantageous to the feeble or powerless and under master morality I create my own values out of strength. Christianity is that slave revolt. The problem for Nietzsche is the New Testament - the introduction of Jesus. He thinks that linking the Old Testament with the New Testament is very cheeky. They are two different books with complete different ideas and so should not be linked together. The Old Testament is full of power - Nietzsche likes that.
The church told them that they had original sin and that by focusing on God, Heaven, and one’s soul, the church can fix the sin inside one. This is Nietzsche’s theory called Metaphysical. The Metaphysical theory says that the church has one pay attention to their internal instead of having the followers focus on the life they live now. By focusing just on God, Heaven, and Soul, one is deemphasizing the importance of the religion itself. With the revaluation of values, Nietzsche focused on morality, more specifically, Master Morality and Slave Morality. Master Morality is when one is concerned with strength and competition, and achieving goals is an accomplishment. Slave Morality deals with concepts of good and evil with the Evil representing the Master morality. The slave morality lives within the master’s shadows and will reject what the master stands for, this morality will suffer from resentment also, both moralities can be found in the same person. In a person, the Master morality vision has gone beyond the concepts of good and evil and has looked into a deeper meaning in themselves, but the master morality is not an end
