Every year in the United States, more than 480,000 people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke making it the leading cause of preventable death in this country. Cigarette smoking is usually introduced to people at a young age. A majority of smokers started before they were eighteen years of age; smoking at an early age only increases an individual’s chances of suffering from an addiction than those of a late age. In May of 2008, Nicotinell released an advertisement to address the whole smoking situation. Nicotinell presents one of the many disturbing effects of smoking. Rather than ranting and raving about their product’s features and benefits the ad depicts the negative effects of smoking on the body. The ad appeals to all …show more content…
female viewers that come across the ad. The organization’s goal is to convert smokers into non-smokers by pushing their product of mint flavored medicated nicotine gum to help wane smokers from smoking completely. The design crew for this ad uses visual concepts, written word, and the rhetorical use of pathos to persuade the audience to buy the Nicotinell product. In order for an advertisement to be successful they must captivate the audience’s interest. To captivate the audience’s attention, the advertisers used visual concepts such as color hues, light vs. dark, and spacing to draw the viewer’s eye in different directions within the ad to important aspects of the advertisement. In the foreground of the picture sits an elderly woman in the center of the page leaning of a cake. In the background appears to be an outdoor scenery giving the clue that the woman is outside. The back scene kind of looks like the outdoor visiting area of a senior citizen home. The ad designers use dark hued neural colors to help the viewer focus their eyes on what is going on in the lit foreground making the older woman the center of attention. The creator uses bright colors to catch the viewers eye to key information that helps the reader understand the ad. These colors are used to draw attention to the woman’s suit, cake, and gum product in the lower right color of the advertisement. The woman’s cobalt blue suit with the light teal shirt mimic’s the colors of the product making a memorable sketch of the product in the viewer’s head. Whenever they see these colors the will trigger something in the viewer’s mind to bring up the image. To go along with the visual some ads include written word to help further convince the audience to purchase their product. The Nicotinell’s words at the bottom of the page state, “smoking causes premature aging” these words clearly state the organization’s stance against smoking. Along with the words the advertisers used pathos to draw upon all the female smoker’s insecurities about their outward appearances. The organization knows that women are very dependent on their looks these days; if they don’t look in tip top shape they won’t feel beautiful. Every woman wants that perfect looking skin with the beautiful natural glow. Especially now since social media is so popular; we just want pretty looking Instagram pictures. The advertisement agency does a great job getting the message across that smoking is bad for an individual’s health.
At first glance the ad doesn’t look like much but a sweet old lady celebrating her birthday; however, when you take a closer look the audience can see that the lady is holding a cigarette over the candles flame to ignite it. Just below the cigarette are the numbers four and two candles in a bright pink cake that read happy birthday. This leaves the audience to insinuate that the elderly woman is actually forty-two years old instead of eighty. Anyone knows that a forty – two-year-old woman does not have that many wrinkles or completely white hair. The lady even has brown and black age spots on her forty-two-year-old skin. It just goes to show that smoking accelerates the aging process on an individual’s skin.
Overall this advertisement effectively uses color, textual elements, and the rhetorical use of pathos to influence viewers to buy the Nicotinell nicotine gum. By using visuals, words, and color Nicotinell reinforces readers’ opinions against smoking cigarettes. It also encourages viewers to quit or never even start smoking. Nicotinell convinces viewers to buy their product because it puts them on a better path to a healthier lifestyle starting with improving an individual’s outward
appearance.
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Since realizing smoking is associated to many health problems such as cancer, many advertisements are designed purposely to the end cigarette smoking. An estimated 40 million adults in the United States currently smoke cigarettes. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States (CDC, 2016). Nowadays we are more conscious about how terrible smoking is for our health. Smoking cigarettes can be one of the most destructive things you can do to your body and yet millions of people around the world continue to do so. Anti-smoking ads fight the cancerous substance and hope to transform the minds of many or even the lives of many. It has become frequent in many advertisements to see the damage that smoking causes to someone and to others due to secondhand contact.
Every year cigarette smoking is responsible for 500,000 premature deaths (Nugel), you do not want to be just another statistic, do you? America’s first cash crop was tobacco. That means that tobacco has been around for a really long time. It was not until 1865, though, that cigarettes were sold commercially. They were sold to soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Dowshen). From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
Experiencing the death of a loved one is never easy, especially when the cause is something self-inflicted, such as cigarettes. Imagine if that loved one was your parent or even worse, your own child. Now, imagine watching the demise and physical incapacities that transpire while you see them deteriorate right in front of you. Feel the anger that would coarse through your veins if you were to see an add that glamorized such deadly instruments, particularly once you realize that the areas being marketed are lower class. Cigarettes are legal killers that cripple many individuals and families alike. They are a highly addictive substance that benefit no one. I am against cigarettes in every capacity as I have dealt with the effects of it on a personal level. Cigarettes leave a distaste in the mouth literally and figuratively. I am also a firm believer that
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
...t that it claims smoking is good for you. However because of its positive tone of words such as “I” “my” make the opinion created in the audiences, minds as something persuasive and to rely on. Whereas, Advert two is not bias, however, it is a fact that “smoking kills”. This strengthens the argument, and the use of impersonal tone and “Alghanim” seems factual and helps persuade the reader that smoking kills. The word “kills” represents the experience of death, entrapment.
The target audience of this advertisement is everyone who smokes. The advertisement aims to explain the health and financial consequences of smoking. There is a wide range of ages of those who smoke and this advertisement aims to deter them from smoking. It also targets those who don’t smoke by making them aware of the effects of smoking as
Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals that are incredibly harmful to our bodies. It is simply unethical to allow one’s employees, patients, customers, clients, etc. to be exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking not only decreases morale with frequent smoke breaks, it also causes a sharp decline in clientele or patients who prefer a smoke free environment, like pregnant women. As a community, we need to protect those who choose not to expose themselves to the number one preventable causes of death in the United States. Taking on a tobacco-free campus policy and refusing to hire smokers, supports the global cause to end tobacco use.
Cigarettes are one of the most common killers known to mankind. Cigarettes kill about 6 million people every year, and that number isn’t going to go down in less we do something about it. Smoking in the twentieth century killed only 100 million people, whereas a billion could die in our century. There are several more reasons why we should ban cigarettes, and I am going list them.
In recent years, smoking has started to take over the lives of many teenagers. The number of teenagers smoking has increased dramatically in the last several years. This is a major problem because smoking can lead to sickness and major diseases that can lead to death. Teens tend to participate in this while out of the presence of an adult figure. Although teens should not be smoking in the first place, an adult figure should be around to help insure that their children are doing the right things, even when they are behind sealed doors with their peers. Teenagers as they mature become a model for younger children and when they set the example of smoking can ruin their respectable image to the children that look up to them.
Cigarettes are so addictive, so why are they still legal today? The effects of smoking on a person and around that person are so extreme and harmful that smoking should not be legal for anyone. It really amazes me why anybody would smoke and harm their body if they knew how bad it can harm their health, and potentially cause death. Not only is smoking just unhealthy, the bigger problem is that smoking can lead to death. Smoking should be made illegal since there are many negative and dangerous consequences such as secondhand, and thirdhand smoke related illnesses, health risks to the smoker, and health risks to people around the smoker. Although, if cigarettes were made illegal people that are employed by Cigarette industries would lose their
One of the biggest problems that people are faced with on a day-to-day basis is cigarette smoke. The sole cause for 480,000 deaths each year just in the United States is accredit to cigarettes(CDC). For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable. Some smoke to appeal to their peers or simply because it “feels good.” Smoking one cigarette can lead to a major addiction. The effects of smoking hurt oneself and those amongst us. Smoking Kills as the ad portrays this revolver and cigarettes as the bullets, and also lists the side effects of smoking. Cigarettes causes cancer, increases the risk of you getting a stroke, highly addictive and causes a lot of health problems. Nearly 16
Smoking cigarettes is a very deadly addiction that, unfortunately, 42.1 million adults in the United States and 6.4 million children have. The reason why so many people get addicted to cigarettes because of nicotine. Medicinenet.com says that nicotine is “Made by the tobacco plant or produced synthetically. Nicotine has powerful pharmacologic effects (including increased heart rate, heart stroke volume, and oxygen consumption by the heart muscle), as well as powerful psychodynamic effects (such as euphoria, increased alertness, and a sense of relaxation). Nicotine is also powerfully addictive.”
The consumption of tobacco and cigarette advertising is an age old problem worldwide. The new concern is based on the high rate at which young people are taking on this bad habit. Now more than ever, it has become a major health risk, not only to smokers but to young people as well. The use of cigarettes has many significant negative externalities of consumption and has been criticized for decades. The figure below shows to what extent the consumption of tobacco affects the society through its externalities that add to public/social costs.
While in today’s times it is common knowledge that smoking is harmful and can lead to things such as lung cancer, that has not always been the case. The current day stigma behind smoking was not always there in earlier years. This is due to the way that smoking was handeled by major corporations. As stated in the article, during the 1980s and 1990s, cigarette smoking was advertised to preteens and teenagers. This caused a problem for adolescents, especially young women who may become pregnant. This is also the first step in the P.E.R.I.E. process illustrated in real time. The population began to see a potential problem develop. The idea was that if young women were being targeted by tobacco advertisers, they may be more likely to smoke during pregnancy and lead to health defects in their children. The case illustrates the etiology phase of the process by determining that the reason so many adolescents are smoking is due to the advertisements targeting them, and also the availability of
