In the early nineteenth century, Boston increased in size by filling in the marshy area around where Washington Street is today. The city, concerned about crowding in the already established neighborhoods downtown and on Beacon Hill, decided to develop this area into new residential neighborhoods. The population of Boston had increased dramatically in the first half of the nineteenth century from the large number of immigrants and the steady rise of industry in a port city. Between 1850 and 1875, the area south and east of Washington Street (the ocean side) became the South End, which was intended to attract the growing middle class and to persuade them not to move to the suburbs. The pattern and plan of the South End are the main contributors to its architectural unity and also what sets it apart as its own distinct neighborhood. The choices in materiality and organization of space give the South End a visual coherence unlike any other neighborhood in Boston. It is one of the largest remaining Victorian residential neighborhoods in the United States.

In Haiti, building codes and regulations are all but nonexistent, so the minimum safety standard is not sufficient for people to be dwelling in the buildings. Since there is not a lot of wood available due to deforestation, concrete is the primary building material used for most of the structures, according to Alan Dooley, a Nashville architect (Fountain, 2010). Concrete is costly and the cement
During the nineteenth century, in Nebraska most of the pioneers lived in a sod house. Some people loved living in them, but others found it unendurable. In the sod homes they had dirt floors. If the family had money they would use carpet, or some used logs. During the winter they used a stove in the house for heat. Families could only live in their houses for six to seven years unless they had whitewash or stucco covering the exterior of the house. Nothing ever seemed to be clean with the dirt floors. The walls were thick on the houses and insulation was good. Their schools were built of sod and had dirt floors to keep the teachers feet from frosting, this caused fleas. The walls on the house are three feet or so thick. The house probably had
What are the goals of the Housing First policy? Homelessness is an issue in multiple communities, more than half the homeless people have problems with finding and keeping a stable home environment because of substance abuse or job loss. The Housing First model helps women transition to housing and creates a path out of homelessness. The Housing First model helps connect homeless women with appropriate in-patient or out-patient professional supports, but their program is not being contingent on their sobriety. The vast majority of people who drink or use drugs- including those who use recreationally and those who meet criteria for substance abuse disorders deem stably housed.
During the Victorian period, there was a revival of classical (Greek and Roman), Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Romantic architects replicated Greek and Roman buildings, which were revered as the ultimate examples of beauty (Sporre 487; Tansey 932). Increased nationalism in England also sparked a revival of Gothic architecture. After the Houses of Parliament burnt down in London (1834), the task of redesign the new building was assigned to Charles A. Barry and Augustus W. N. Pugin. Their Gothic design of the new Houses of Parliament make it a prime example of Victorian architecture today (Tansey 955).
