I’m sure you have heard of the Trinity Corporation; the large housing business that seems to be quite the success story. Every year they order enormous Christmas decorations and spend extravagant amounts on menial things, so surely their properties must be in good enough condition. Journalist Nellie Bly hopes to understand the state of Trinity’s properties by doing some field work, starting with No. 4 Grand st. Nellie wasn’t familiar with the part of town that Trinity held most its property in, so when the Grand Street bus screeched to a halt and the conductor swung the door open, she obliged and stepped off, not sure where to go next. She glanced at each of the houses on the street, most of the formidable brick houses, quite small but …show more content…
9, 21-1/2, 26, and 28. No. 9 was a 3 story building, but it could hardly be called that; the first floor had one room containing a candy shop, the second floor is where the owner of the shop lives and he rents out the third floor above him. The water was behind the building and there used to be another tenement on the rear of it but the Health Board had Trinity pull it down for it was in such a poor state. I could tell you of the rest of the tenements but they were all in pretty much the same state as the ones I have described to you, or worse. Trinity shouldn’t be allowed to throw parties while their tenants live in such squalor, I’m surprised the Health Board doesn’t make them rebuild all of their tenements seeing as they are all ready to fall down any day. Unfortunately if Trinity is made to rebuild these the poor people that reside in those tenements are going to be homeless while the buildings are being rebuilt, so Trinity probably won’t be stopped any time

The lack of available social housing is mainly due to stock levels steadily diminishing each year since 1980, after tenants bought nearly half-a-million council houses under the ‘Right to Buy’ scheme. This coupled with the decline in house building; which is currently at its lowest level since 1946, has brought about a shameful lack of affordable public housing (Turffrey, 2010).

In my experience as a real estate sales representative, I have looked at many rental properties that are owned by people that are commonly known as slum lords. These units are in disrepair with leaks, mold, mildew, holes in walls, ceiling and poor floor coverings. Many people are afraid of pushing these issues to have repairs done as they might lose their shelter or their rent could be increased. There are people living in a rooms in a house, that are also at risk as they don’t realize they are not protected under the tenant act so the owners can remove them from their shelter without notice. I have also experienced people living in abandoned commercial buildings ...
In conclusion, I believe that every place has one building that either makes or breaks the area in which it is located. I believe that my city has areas where some buildings bring the area down. As a resident of Saginaw I didn’t really want to bring the negative to this paper, I’d rather bring the positive buildings to my paper. I hate the negativity the world has on Saginaw. But what they fail to realize is every place has a downfall, and the rise of Saginaw is on its way!

Most of the houses are in a depleted and worn-out state. When one really observes the building closely, only then can you imagine, the state of these buildings at its prime. A private citizens committee with donations and government help has tried to restore the pre-independence architecture, but it has been a really poor effort. Since the Food Street comes to life at night, the defaced buildings and the really bad renovation work is hidden, in the darkness. The street has been cobbled and the open drains have been covered.
