Stereotyping is something that occurs on a regular basis in every culture in which I have been privileged to encounter. Sometimes it can be neutral in a preliminary assessment of someone, and at other times can be very harmful to the person being stereotyped. To stereotype people often demonstrates ones’ own ignorance and foolishness. The first portion of this assignment is to write about gender, racial, or ethnic stereotyping that I see in everyday life. I read about it every day, one cannot help but do so in America these days. It is saturated in the news and other media outlets, such as social media. It seems then that the answer to part two would be education. The reality is that there will always be stereotyping. Ignorance is not just the lack of formal education and knowledge, but also the lack of familiarity. In this case the lack of familiarity with other cultures and sub-cultures. There are stereotype classifications in all walks of life. They come from what I would call closed loop societies. A closed loop society being defined here, as a group of people of common (sub) culture with minimal or no exposure to other (sub) cultures. Some are closed due to choice, others due to obstacles such as geography or economics. Even if you somehow managed to “coerce” a non-discriminatory social behavior among society at large, it would only be manifest in outward action and not with-in man’s “self”. It comes down to a moral argument of man being essentially corrupt in spirit. The rule of law is only as effective as the society’s willingness to submit to it, so therefore institutionalized regulation is only effective in its ability to stop or curb the outward expression of this type of behavior. Men left to themselves will migrate to social groups that are like minded and supporting of one another (Lynch, 2016). Even within these groups, there will always be the person considered to be the “least” of them. These groups will establish obstacles and barriers between themselves and another group, which will naturally lead to stereotyping and eventually, institutionalized
