A job that employs hundreds of thousands of people in the United States would often be perceived to be beneficial to society. In the case of working in fields, people are put to work and receive an income so that they are better able to support themselves. However, what is lacking in this common mentality that putting women to work in the fields is advantageous, is that the harm being done to these women far outweighs the positive factors of having a job. In the documentary, Rape in the Fields, the troubling outcomes of working in the fields is finally given awareness. Consequently, this film excellently shows the hidden truth of what working in the fields entails for these women, through showing the powerlessness the women feel and through …show more content…
This factor illustrates the extreme power imbalance because the women know that they have virtually no say in how their employer treats them. The women just want a job, so they simply have to suffer through going to work and being sexually assaulted on a daily basis. According to the women interviewed in the documentary, these occurrences of sexual assault occur immediately upon being hired. What is even worse, is that the employers clearly state that if the women do not allow themselves to be raped or taken advantage of, they will lose their job (Rape in the Fields). Until 1995, there was no protection for these women who were Gosser 2 abused at work a countless amount of times; and until 2002, none of the abusers had ever faced legal repercussions (Rape in the Fields). In 2002, though, Harris Farms was summoned to attend a trial regarding the frequent raping of women while at work.To illustrate the brutality of the abuse that occurs all too often in the fields, the film makes a point of saying that the employer at Harris Farms was on trial because he raped one of his workers three times while holding her …show more content…
One of the men in charge of running the farm, Juan Marin, had assaulted a variety of the girls working at the farm. In fact, when a case was formed against him, twenty-six different women added their names to the lawsuit, saying that they had been a victim of his abuse (Rape in the Fields). This fact is both shocking and horrifying to think about—that a man had single-handedly abused twenty-six women, and each of the women were so afraid of being deported that they initially said nothing Gosser 3 about it. What makes this scenario even worse, though, is that one of the young girls who was working in the fields’ mother witnessed her daughter being groped. The girl was only fifteen, and obviously when her mother witnessed this scene, she was outraged. Fortunately, a case
Young girls were not allowed to open the windows and had to breathe in the dust, deal with the nerve-racking noises of the machines all day, and were expected to continue work even if they 're suffering from a violent headache or toothache (Doc 2). The author of this report is in favor of employing young women since he claimed they seemed happy and they loved their machines so they polished them and tied ribbons on them, but he didn 't consider that they were implemented to make their awful situations more bearable. A woman who worked in both factory and field also stated she preferred working in the field rather than the factory because it was hard work but it never hurt her health (Doc 1), showing how dangerous it was to work in a factory with poor living conditions. Poor living conditions were common for nearly all workers, and similar to what the journalist saw, may have been overlooked due to everyone seeming
From the stages of the case, we learn that it is important that the employer takes a quick response in case of harassment within the organization. The Hotel was very quick to assure Gregg and the other woman that their complaints have been received and everything is being put into place to ensure that it do not happen again. What most of the victims of harassment need most is to be assured that they will be protected even after making a complaint. Gregg and the other woman who faced multiple cases of harassment, after being assured that they will be protected from the perpetrator went on to conduct their usual business within the organization with no problems at
forced to drive around and was raped so she should have known who it was.
Women’s issues are a huge concern to me as I transition into the adult world, especially when sexual assaults are associated with the college culture. From the streets of America to a child bride in Africa, women are suffering from abuse, harassment, and mistreatment. The feminist movement has enhanced life for women, but, in modern society, there are many areas that still need improvement. If we want to resolve issues over the treatment of women, we must tackle and overcome negative views of women, take preventive measures to ensure the safety of women, and bring attention to these injustices.
The EEOC has also stated that a victim of sexual harassment need not say anything to any supervisor. Co-workers and supervisors are liable if any one kn...
It is very troubling to hear that 1 in 5 women in University will be victims of sexual assault, and even more so that less than 60% of cases get reported. The purpose of my paper is to put emphasis on how important it is that more people be informed about rape culture, but to also explain how men are just as important in working towards prevention as are women.
Rape is the unlawful compelling of a woman through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse. According to the Sexual Assault Statistics “,only 16% of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police department per year.” Women who are a victim of rape suffer a lifetime of fear, emotional stress and depression, but their rapist is sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison, depending on the severity of the case. After 25 years, Crista Stephens out of Houston, Texas can now speak about the night she was attacked and raped, but still, trembles every time she speaks her rapist name. Educating yourself, family, friends and peers can decrease your chances of being a victim of rape. Are 20 years long enough for a rapist to be behind
This book gives a great overview of what rape is and how it affects women. It mentions how rape is a crime of violence and not a crime of passion. It also talks about how women deal with rape and how to help them. It also goes through the politic...
Harassment has been an issue in the work force and in many other fields for decades, leading all the way back up to 1964. The United States Congress passed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, prohibiting discrimination at work on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin and sex. There are many different types of harassment that many do not even know that they can be accused for. Through out my research I will be naming every type of harassment and presenting an article for each topic.
...e was not being abused, she was still in great pain and going through a large amount of sorrow after the loss of her family. The author of this story relates to women being discriminated because she was born in the 40’s and came from chili. In her biography she wrote “I was not supposed to be in any way a liberated person. I was a female born in the ‘40s in a patriarchal family; I was supposed to marry and make everyone around me happy.” –Isabel Allende (pg 1224)

The answer to this question seems quite obvious at first: rape should never be considered ‘okay,’ but too often in our society it is allowable. Excuses are made, victims are blamed and the perpetrators face little to no punishment. In our society it often feels like raping someone breaks only a folkway instead of a mores. The perpetrators rarely face legal or social consequences for their actions while the victims often find themselves further violated by society. Very few people would answer the above question as it is affirmatively, but how would people, in this case Pennsbury High school students, respond to this question when it is phrased in such a way as to not provoke such a knee-jerk negative response? In order to attempt to answer
“People dominate animals, men dominate women.” Each is a relation of hierarchy, an inequality, with particularities and variations within and between them. (Cite Orange book pg. 92.) For centuries, women have been viewed and used as a man’s “property”, whether it is being used for sexual satisfaction or for the sake of bearing children and taking care of the home. Men are typically perceived as head of the household and whatever they say goes; anything to satisfy their hunger for power and control. Have women ever had a say about what they want to use their bodies for? Laws against rape may have changed over time, but men’s consistent aggressive behavior unfortunately, has not.
Another problem women have in the workplace is getting promotions. Woman who have worked for their company for many years, receiving great reviews and employee-of-the-year awards are often filled by less qualified men (Armour, 2008). The next problem women face is unfair pay. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women working 41 to 44 hours per week earn 84.6 percent of what men working similar hou...
