Photo Manipulation Negatively Distorts People’s Perception of Body Images and Beauty According to McCue (2013), humans are visual creatures who often process information based on what they see. That being said, people receive and learn information through images and videos from various sources of media. As we all live in a world where technology is well advanced, we are able to gain access to new discoveries and things with convenience but unfortunately, we may also create false perceptions and misunderstandings with many manipulated photos seen on the street, on Internet sites, in commercials, magazines or newspapers. “A psychological study found that three minutes spent looking at models in a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel …show more content…

It is important to understand that what we see is not always true, to be aware of how photo manipulation works, and most importantly to not be affected by it. I feel that photo manipulation affects people’s perception of body images and physical appearance negatively, which lead to the desires of having the “ideal” body among men and women of all ages. Therefore, this project is created to show what photo manipulation does, how it works and to raise public awareness of the problems and impacts caused by photo manipulation to our perception of body images and physical appearance in order to help and comfort more people who feel unconfident about their body and those who constantly wish to have the “perfect” body. Photo manipulation has become a bigger and bigger influence as we are more involved in the use of media and technology, where almost everything is shown in a visual form.
Advertisements and magazines portray similar body image and beauty standards. This is an interesting problem because everyone can get affected by this ideal image and even worse, influenced by these unnatural photos of models to the point where they desire to become like them. Many actions have been done against manipulated images: an anorexic survivor starts a petition against photo manipulation (Hodges, 2015), multiple surveys done regarding the impacts produced by photo manipulation and also an experiment asking graphic designers from different countries to use Photoshop in order to show their country’s definition of beauty (CTV News, 2015). I am motivated in producing this project because I was a victim of wanting a slim body as shown in magazines and advertisements. I feel that it is important for people to understand and overcome the influences that photo manipulation has toward our idea of an ideal body. First of all, the origin of photo manipulation will be discussed in order to familiarize with the stated topic. Afterwards, the role and the use of photo manipulation in society will be identified to understand how present photo manipulation is in everyday life. Then, advertisements for physical improvement will be focused as examples of photo manipulation and analyzed to show their connections with photo manipulation. The society’s attitudes, both positive and negative, toward manipulating images will then be mentioned. Lastly, influences and impacts of photo manipulation will be emphasized in order to make aware of photo manipulation’s severity along with the risks and prevention of distorted perception of body images and

We hear sayings everyday such as “Looks don’t matter; beauty is only skin-deep”, yet we live in a decade that contradicts this very notion. If looks don’t matter, then why are so many women harming themselves because they are not satisfied with how they look? If looks don’t matter, then why is the media using airbrushing to hide any flaws that one has? This is because with the media establishing unattainable standards for body perfection, American Women have taken drastic measures to live up to these impractical societal expectations. “The ‘body image’ construct tends to comprise a mixture of self-perceptions, ideas and feelings about one’s physical attributes. It is linked to self-esteem and to the individual’s emotional stability” (Wykes 2). As portrayed throughout all aspects of our media, whether it is through the television, Internet, or social media, we are exploited to a look that we wish we could have; a toned body, long legs, and nicely delineated six-pack abs. Our society promotes a body image that is “beautiful” and a far cry from the average woman’s size 12, not 2. The effects are overwhelming and we need to make more suitable changes as a way to help women not feel the need to live up to these unrealistic standards that have been self-imposed throughout our society.
Photography is defined at the art or practice of taking and processing photographs. To understand photography is having insight or good judgment to know how to take the picture, but also edit it if need be. Does photography limit our understanding of the world? What some people haven’t realized is that photography is all around us, whether it is in the person’s mind to see it or not. While we see photography throughout our daily routine, people dismiss the small types of photography and focus on the bigger sceneries like other countries beautiful cities and landscapes. It’s true that in this day and age, most photographs we see have been altered in some way. When photographers use Photoshop to edit our photos, we use many different ways to make that image appealing to the eye. Although, photographers unless told to do so will not change an image into something totally absurd that takes away from being astatically pleasing. Images are a gateway to the insight of the rest of the world’s cultures landscapes, and architecture, and photography is the key aspect to it. Photography is a one way to see the world, but it is better if you go and travel around the world to see it. In order to see if photography actually limits our understanding, we have to first look at the positive side of photography.
In conclusion it is possible to see how the media promotes a physical and psychological disease among women through the usage of unrealistic body images as it urges them to change their bodies, buy “enhancing” products, and redefine their opinions. Such statements may appear to be ridiculous, but for young women who are seeking to perfect their body according to how the media portrays “good looks” it is the basis for corruption. Confidence, contentment and healthy living are the keys to a perfect and unique body image and no amount of money can advertise or sell as genuine a treatment as this.

According to Naomi Wolf in her novel “Beauty Myth”, one of the many reasons women obtain concerns with their bodies is due to the universal images of young female bodies presented through advertisements in fashion magazines. Advertisements in magazines are altering and shaping the desires of men and women. Magazines sell viewers images of beautiful, skinny, flawless confident young women. Many are ‘doctored’ or altered in some way. These doctored photographs can be seemingly harmless, such as advertisements, but they can misrepresent a product or person. The media has one of the most influential impacts on what is seen as beauty in society (Bromley, 2012).Women spend thousands of dollars on products and cosmetics to achieve the unrealistic and unhealthy look of models on advertisements (Valenti, 2007). In most extreme cases, women who feel that their unhealthy weight goal is not achieved turn to extreme eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating (Cunning, 2011).
