Binge watching: Known as watching a television show or series for an unhealthy amount of time. This trend is not only affecting people worldwide, but young minds that are molding into the future leaders of our wold as we know it. It is considered binge watching if the viewer watches 2-6 episodes in one sitting. Many people view this as a positive thing, but they might be unaware of the negative effects that this slight enjoyment causes. The fact of the matter is, the negative effects of binge watching outweigh the positives because of its role in students mental instability, physical trauma, and social deprivation. Greg Dillion, a scientist at Boston University provides a reason for the psychological effect. Dillion says “ An addict is working on a two pronged schema, which is aspiration and completion. Aspiration is a thedopamine-fulled desire to recapture a feeling.” In his study, he correlates binge watching with addiction. The negative effects of a binge watching addiction are just the same as the negative effects of a more well known addiction such as drugs, alcohol, or sex. If a person does not have their “fix”, then they might show the symptoms of withdraw which are distance from social interaction, feeling the need to watch more television in order to ease the pain, and only feeling successful and content after finishing yet another …show more content…

According the the journal of the American Heart Association, adults, 18 and older, who watched more than three hours a day “double their risk of premature death compared to those who watch less.” The reason for this is sitting for long periods of time is extremely unhealthy because it increases your risk for more serious health issues. This claim is backed up by scientific research preformed by Dietz, the author of “ Do we Fatten our Children at the Television set?”, preformed a study on people ages 18 and up that observed the hours of tv watched in a day in relation to obesity. In his study, he found every hour of television watched, the chance of obesity increases by 2%. While obesity is a negative effect of binge watching, so is Myopia. According to “Asap Science: Answers to the World’s Weirdest Questions, Most Persistent Rumors, and Unexplained Phenomena,” many people who watch excessive amounts of tv develop myopia which is essentially nearsightedness.
