Abuse, in any and all of its forms, is something many Korean women and girls deal with every day. In 2002, a survey done by the Korean Institute of Criminology, the number of sex purchases in Korea equaled to 4.4 of the countries GDP (Gross Domestic Product), almost the same as agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries combined. The survey also showed that there were at least 33,000 women working in prostitution. 8% of women working in Korea in their twenties and thirties were prostitutes. Also, a survey done by the Korea Women’s Hot Line showed that 42.6% of Korean men have purchased sexual service when having a drink. 12.9% of men said that they have bought sex when on business. 41.3% of all Koreans did not know that prostitution was illegal in Korea. Despite these outrageous numbers, prostitution has been illegal in Korea since 1961.
A common place that prostitution takes place in is Miari Texas Village (Also known as Miari Texas, Texas Village, Texas Miari, or just plain Miari.) an area in north-eastern Seoul, with over 250 prostitution houses. In these houses, liquor and food are served in the front and in the back, sex services take place in the back rooms. On average, a woman will see five to ten men a night. The women usually get paid 1.5 million won ($1, 340.00) monthly, along with 1,500 won ($14.00) for each client they see.
One very disturbing thing about Miari Texas is that 30% of about 1,000 prostitutes are under the age of eighteen. Even though prostitution is illegal, it is tolerated, if the women are over eighteen. Many of the young prostitutes in Miari Texas are runaways who feel they have nothing more to lose.
The first prostitution house (brothel) was established in the 1920’s when Korean women were taken as sex slaves by the Japanese military during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910 – 1945). After the Korean war ended in 1953, the large American military presence led to the building of “camp town prostitution” for the U.
When most people hear the word “prostitute”, they immediately envision a person who is a disease-ridden imbecile of society. However, if one researches the statistics and personal recollections of prostitutes, they will find that they may be very moral and great women. The reflection that Beth Bailey and David Farber recall in the essay called Prostitutes on Strike: The Women of Hotel Street During WW II shows what the prostitutes were actually like in the 1940’s. In several cases of the women in Hawaii during World War II, their compassion is shown through their cooperation with organizations and with the public. Many of the things that they did, however, were not entirely as moral as they seem to appear to be. The events associated with the prostitutes that stayed in Hawaii during WWII can be thought of as both ethical and unethical, but nonetheless, they fought a war of their own to keep their occupations and ways of life.
Globalization helps many people achieve greatness. But for the majority it brings hardships and struggle. People will be plagued by the effects of globalization and will have a tough time over coming it. We are far from reaching a point where we can say we have sustainable prosperity throughout our world. But before we focus in on sustaining prosperity, we must first reach prosperity and bring it to all corners or the earth.
As we first get into the book, we find out that the origins of comfort stations i.e. military brothels are unknown, but official documents strongly suggest that the Japanese Imperial Forces created comfort stations roughly around 1931-1932 for Japanese sailors. In the introduction we get some of Tanaka’s personal opinions and thoughts, and a vivid account of what it felt like to be a comfort woman by a Filipina. “Twelve soldiers raped me in quick succession, after which I was given half an hour rest. Then twelve more soldiers followed. I bled so much and was in such pain; I could not even stand up” (p.1). During the war, the Japanese could see that their soldiers were committing mass rape toward civilians. That led military leaders to ask the Japanese government for comfort stations to be made in order to prevent such crimes. This is a quote from a Japanese Lieutenant-General in 1932. “Recently I have heard a lot of scandalous stories, including that some of our soldiers wander around seeking women. Such a phenomenon is hard to prevent as fighting becomes less frequent. Therefore the establishment of appropriate facilities must be accepted as a good cause and should be promoted” (p.10). They were also created to boost soldier morale and to prevent the spread of VD among fellow troops. In the first couple of chapters Tanaka explains how women from different countries were procured into working as sex slaves and how they were brought into such dealings. The women used for comfort houses were at first professional Japanese prostitutes, and poor Japanese and Korean women. They were usually recruited by an agent who would go to a specific town and look for girls to recruit. Of course deceit was used to get these girls to come in that they were promised a nice paying job, food, and shelter if they came along. The recruiting of Korean women was a way of the Japanese to colonize their newly gai...
Hawthorne shows hope through Hester who changes for the better. After she is let out from prison she is forced to stand on the scaffold for three hours. Hester then decides to move away from society and isolates herself and Pearl off near the woods. As years go by, Hester starts to involve herself more in the society and helps around. Hester gives hope to some of the people in the society. As she gives hope people begin to think her letter means “Able” instead of “Adulterer.” Hawthorne writes, “Such helpfulness was found in her,—so much power to do, and power to sympathize,—that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able. . .” (158). Hawthorne believes in hope, and little by little Hester begins to change for the better. Hope is shown through Hester because at the beginning of the novel there seems to be no hope or future for Hester. As the novel progresses, so does the hope Hawthorne has for Hest...
Prostitution To understand the relationship between sex trafficking, prostitution and drug use, it must first be understood how sex trafficking and prostitution are related. Although many people are familiar with what prostitution entails, Kubasek and Herrera define it as the engaging, agreeing to engage, or offering to engage in sexual acts or contacts with another person in return for a fee (2015). The authors define sex trafficking as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act (2015). Something that many do not realize is that individuals who may be victims of trafficking are commonly located while they are engaging in prostitution, and are then criminalized instead of offered the protection and support they often desperately need. Our current legal system does not handle trafficking cases as a means of prostitution.
Asia has a long cultural history with prostitution that has provided a global sex trade service industry for locals and foreigners alike.3 “It’s simply the norm that you have two kinds of women –those you respect and those you can buy and play around with.”4 Not only are there economic motives for preserving the sex trade industry in Asian countries, but accepted cultural norms and attitudes perpetuate this industry. Indigenous demand drives

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” It is not a mystery that minorities were oppressed throughout the history of the United States. In 1990 70% of African Americans and Hispanics in their mid to late twenties held a high school diploma or higher compared to the 86% that their white counterparts achieved. The disparities were obvious throughout the decade. The hip-hop culture gave minorities a voice and a realm to express themselves. There were always minorities who experienced the same lives as the majority of America did, but hip hop mainly spoke to those minorities in urban neighborhoods who were entrapped by violence and negativity. Most of these minorities were young people who were reaching the peak of their adolescent years. Their attitudes could be seen in the lyrics of Notorious B.I.G. when he chants, “I don’t want to live no more. Sometimes I hear death knocking at my front door,” in the song “Everyday Struggle.” Without hip-hop music I believe there would be more minority violence because this was the only genre of music that spoke specifically to minorities, especially those in the inner cities. Hip hop was monumental because it did not apply to one group of minorities; every aspect of the minority population was represented by artists who presented different lyrical content and cultural messages. The genre also gave those who were not minorities a look into the insight of those who were being oppressed, ultimately creating some form of understanding. The majority population could never fully understand the minority population because they never would have the opportunity to experience ...
Prostitution is the provision of sexual services for negotiated payments between consenting adults. So defined, prostitution is a service industry like any other in which people exchange skills for money or other rewards. Johnson has defined prostitution as “the act of offering oneself for hire to engage in sexual relations” (Johnson 717). In addition, according to Ariza Ahmed, "Prostitution may be the world's oldest profession" (Ariza 1). Prostitution occurs in a variety of forms, two examples are street prostitution where it is more common to see, and also in escort prostitution where the act may take place at the client's residence, hotel room or private clubs. Although, generally the majority of prostitutes usually are female with male clients, but also there are gay male prostitutes, lesbian prostitutes, and heterosexual male prostitutes. One example of this service is sex tourism, which refers to traveling to engage in sexual relations with prostitutes. Since long before human beings were fully human, due to the fact that males have in general wanted more sex than females. And the basic laws of economics will inevitably meet any demand met by someone willing to supply, if the price is right. Also, as chimpanzees trade food for sex, human society ever recorded has a certain fraction of women who, for a fee, will provide sex to men outside of formal relationships such as marriage. In addition, in pre-industrial times between 1750-1850, Miller explains that sex work was one of the few ways a woman could make a good living for herself, and it is estimated that in the nineteenth century about 5.5% of the female population of the typical European or North American city was thus employed (Miller A16). For years later, sex work cont...

Hip hop has permeated popular culture in an unprecedented fashion. Because of its crossover appeal, it is a great unifier of diverse populations. Although created by black youth on the streets, hip hop's influence has become well received by a number of different races in this country. A large number of the rap and hip hop audience is non-black. It has gone from the fringes, to the suburbs, and into the corporate boardrooms. Because it has become the fastest growing music genre in the U.S., companies and corporate giants have used its appeal to capitalize on it. Although critics of rap music and hip hop seem to be fixated on the messages of sex, violence, and harsh language, this genre offers a new paradigm of what can be (Lewis, 1998.) The potential of this art form to mend ethnic relations is substantial. Hip hop has challenged the system in ways that have unified individuals across a rich ethnic spectrum. This art form was once considered a fad has kept going strong for more than three decades. Generations consisting of Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and Asians have grown up immersed in hip-hop. Hip hop represents a realignment of America?s cultural aesthetics. Rap songs deliver a message, again and again, to keep it real. It has influenced young people of all races to search for excitement, artistic fulfillment, and a sense of identity by exploring the black underclass (Foreman, 2002). Though it is music, many people do not realize that it is much more than that. Hip hop is a form of art and culture, style, and language, and extension of commerce, and for many, a natural means of living. The purpose of this paper is to examine hip hop and its effect on American culture. Different aspects of hip hop will also be examined to shed some light that helps readers to what hip hop actually is. In order to see hip hop as a cultural influence we need to take a look at its history.
According to the Sex Workers Project, “Sex work is a term used to refer to all aspects of the lawful and unlawful sex industry” (Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center, 2005). This includes the lived experiences of anyone engaging in sexual transactions. However, before engaging in discussion about this topic, it is important to understand the very distinct differences between sex work and human trafficking within the context of sex industry. This industry is extremely diverse and might include porn actors, street sex workers, dancers, escorts, indoor sex workers, or people who have been trafficked or enslaved. Human trafficking refers to anyone who is being traded, sold, coerced, or forced to engage in sex for money, drugs, or something else. Usually, the victim is not being compensated, but someone else is benefiting from these transactions. Conversely, sex workers are people who are choosing to engage in the sex industry for various reasons. Some of these might include economics, addiction, or even personal empowerment. For the purposes of our discussion, we will mainly be discussing street and indoor sex work.
Hip hop is a subculture and global movement that started in the South Bronx, New York City during the late 1970s. In a post-civil rights era, where deindustrialization dominated, where racism and discrimination still existed, hip hop gave discriminated youths a chance to voice their opinions, and address their struggles in America. It created jobs for African-Americans and has forever transformed America’s politics and culture. Since then, it has only spread worldwide. The culture of hip hop has made its way to other countries such as Germany, South Korea, Australia, Africa, etc., becoming a global phenomenon. The issue, however, is that hip hop is often misunderstood, and seen only as the stereotypes society and mainstream hip hop perpetuates.
Hip-hop is a form of self expression originating from intercity communities branching off of New York City. There are five pillars that this unique culture is based around. These pillars are DJing, Beat boxing, Break Dancing, Graffiti Art, and Rapping. Originally the music aspect of hip-hop culture was based around disc jockeys that would loop breaks from songs to create a rhythmic beat that later was used as a fore ground for rapping and beat boxing. Rapping is composed of three parts; flow, content, and delivery. It is usually about topics that a...
...onsidered miniscule today, they were the foundation for every form of rapping that is present today. People were amazed by Hollywood because prior to him nobody thought of creating rhyme schemes that were performed over entire songs. Other cultural aspects of hip-hop, to the ignorance of most people, can be contributed to the Nation of Gods and Earths. They were a cultural organization that developed their ideas after their founder, Clarence 13X, left the Nation of Islam. They are responsible for things such as the “b-boy stance”, which was a pose where one stands with their feet shoulder width apart and their arms crosses. They also pioneered several phrases that are indicative with the hip hop culture; for example, “What’s up G(shortened for of God) and “Peace.” They have a major role in establishing the hip-hop aesthetic, at least that of the late 70’s and 80’s.
