The Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. On November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens, in a game the NBA now regards as the first played in its history.[5] The first basket was made by Ossie Schectman of the Knickerbockers. Although there had been earlier attempts at professional basketball leagues, including the American Basketball League and the NBL, the BAA was the first league to attempt to play primarily in large arenas in major cities. During its early years, the quality of play in the BAA was not significantly better than in competing leagues or among leading independent clubs such as the …show more content…
In deference to the merger and to avoid possible legal complications, the league name was changed from the BAA to the National Basketball Association in spite of having the same BAA governing body including Podoloff.[6] The new league had seventeen franchises located in a mix of large and small cities,[7] as well as large arenas and smaller gymnasiums and armories. In 1950, the NBA consolidated to eleven franchises, a process that continued until 1953–54, when the league reached its smallest size of eight franchises: the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors, Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester Royals, Fort Wayne Pistons, Tri-Cities Blackhawks, and Syracuse Nationals, all of which remain in the league today. The process of contraction saw the league's smaller-city franchises move to larger cities. The Hawks shifted from the Tri-Cities to Milwaukee in 1951, and then to St. Louis in 1955. The Rochester Royals moved from Rochester, New York, to Cincinnati in 1957 and the Pistons relocated from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Detroit in
Prior to 1966 African Americans were not allowed to play basketball with Caucasians. That all changed when six African American men, led by coach Don Haskins of Texas Western College, played in the March, 1966 NCAA championship and won. I believe that Don Haskins created significant change for African Americans and college basketball.
Earl Lloyd was probably the most courageous player of all time. Some people know him as “The Big Cat” others know him as the first African-American to play in an NBA basketball game with the whites; he changed the way people think and look at basketball and black players and coaches. Earl Lloyd loved basketball from a very young age. Earl had two brothers older than him which was Earnest and Theodore. Earl was very dedicated from a very young age. With his high school team he took them to a state championship and won. After high school Earl went off and took his talents to West Virginia State College. While Earl was there his sophomore year they went 33-0 which is a perfect season. Earl’s team won back to back CIAA conference championships and tournament championships.
Shaquille O’Neal is one of the biggest and most dominant guys to ever play the game of basketball. He is such a big guys, he wears a size 43 shoes! He is one of the most dominant BigMen to ever play in the NBA. Shaquille O’Neal was an NBA power forward from 1982-2011, his life before, during and after the NBA are pretty fascinating subjects to talk about.
What if basketball was never invented? What would kids do in their free time instead of basketball? To understand the origins of basketball and how it developed over the years, a closer look at basketball history is necessary.
The NBA was created in 1946, and in 1976 it merged with the ABA to become the premier league in America. The League has expanded over the years and now consists of 29 teams in the United States and one team in Canada, with each team playing 82 games per season
Backstory of Basketball Basketball has been played since 1891, and still continues to be played today as well. Basketball is an intriguing game played by 2 teams with 5 players from each team on the court at the same time. Basketball, as it started out in 1891 had no African American athletes in the sport. That was still going on, even as late as the 1950’s.
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the
On August 3, 1949 the National Basketball League (NBL) was dissolved into the Basketball Association of American (BAA), which was started in 1946 to create the National Basketball Association. Through the merger of the two leagues into the NBA there were now 18 teams that were eventually dwindled down to eight teams. The original eight are sti...
Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
Games similar to soccer were played in China as early as 400 B.C. In 200 A.D. the Romans played a game in which 2 teams tried to score by advancing the ball across a line on a field, which means no soccer goals. They passed the ball to one another, but not by kicking it. Also in the 1100's, London children played a form of soccer (World Book Encyclopedia, S p.73).
After the NBL was formed other leagues started to form everywhere. Most of the early leagues barely lasted, maybe only a few weeks. The NBL only lasted 5 seasons. In 1902 the New England Leagues got a lot of publicity because they let a black man named Bucky Lew play in a game of basketball. Colleges started to mark the game of basketball, and sponsoring games. At first it was only a few colleges like, Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Columbia, Chicago, Utah, and the Navy. In these earlier games there were problems with injuries, because no fouling rules were in place. “In a 5 year time span many activist groups were trying to get the government to place restrictions on the sport” Bran said, they didn’t like how violent the game of basketball was, so they tried to get it banned, but that didn’t last very long. That restriction never came to past, because the president didn’t think that it was necessary to ban the sport. The Original Celtics were a team called the New York Celtics, the New York celtics started in 1914, but they ending due to World War I. After World War I a man named Jim Furey, and his brother Tom restarted the team. They brought a lot of new things to the game of basketball, and they introduced zone defense, and the first contracts to any player. Back then the players would switch teams depending on if the other team
Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...
On November 6, 1861 the great James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada to Mr. and Mrs. John and Margaret Naismith. As a child James wasn’t very successful in school but excelled in physical activates, this triggered him to drop out of school and become a lumberjack. Soon after this he realized that he needed to turn his life around, so he went back to school to receive a degree in physical education. He later earned a job at a local YMCA in Springfield and was immediately put in task of finding a way to keep men in shape during the winter seasons. After many unsuccessful attempts he finally decided on a sport in which the players must throw a soccer ball into a peach basket on either side of the gymnasium. So on December 21, 1891 the newly formed game known as basketball had its first official game, the final score 1-0. As time passed different basketball leagues were formed the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. In 1949 the BAA joined another basketball league, the NBL, to create the currant league, the NBA. The NBA was a great success with many people. This success would led it to what it is today, a multi-billion dollar association known for consisting in a wide variety of elite athletes.
The formation of the National Basketball Association (NBA) was created on August 3, 1949. This was due to the merger of the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The NBA teams actually played against the American Basketball Association (ABA) for nine years until the ABA folded. Four teams from the ABA are actually part of the NBA today- Indiana, Denver, New York, and San Antonio. The NBA began to become a widely popular league and is known for having some of the best players known today. Eventually, in 1996 the NBA formed the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) with 8 teams making it still a fairly new league today. An African American woman named Sheryl Swoopes was the first woman ever signed to play in the WNBA. Their first game wasn’t played until 1997 with the New York Liberty playing the Los Angeles Sparks. A team was made in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2003 giving the NBA a total of 30 active teams, while the WNBA has a total of 12
