One of the most important aspects of having a strong and successful military is logistics. Without a strong supply corps, a military is not able to mobilize nor sustain their current operations. Sun Tzu says “the line between disorder and order lies in logistics.” Navy supply is a large operation, consisting of over 26,000 personnel. Navy supply’s sole objective is to provide “One-Touch-Supply” in which a single request can activate a global network. With “One-Touch-Supply” navy supply “is responsible for quality of life issues for our naval forces, including food service, postal services, Navy Exchanges, and movement of household goods”(globalsecurity).
Navy Supply System Command is located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania but is responsible for supporting Navy forces worldwide with the supplies they need. Since operations are worldwide there have been several units or fleets that are set up. The Navy Inventory Control Point (NICP) headquarters are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is the central location for repairing parts, components, and also provides logistic and supply assistance to friendly and allied nations. There are other locations known as Federal and Industrial Supply Centers (FISC) that provide logistics support services and products in their regions. There are six Federal and Industrial Supply Centers; they are located in Jacksonville, Norfolk, Oakland, Pearl Harbor, Puget Sound, San Diego, and Yokosuka. There are also several other support services that come under Navy supply such as, Navy Exchange Service Command located in Virginia Beach, with other subunits throughout the world. Navy supply also offers flexible work schedules, tuition assistance, on-base day care centers, fitness center and recreational activities (NAVSUP). Abrashoff begins the book by informing the reader of how his story begins; when he is given command of the USS Benfold. The Benfold was the Navy’s most advanced guided missile destroyer the Navy had in 1997 and its command was to be one of the Navy’s top innovators. Unfortunately, Abrashoff points out some flaws with the Navy’s personnel management that I found to be shocking. First, was that “nearly 35 percent of the people who joined the military annually, wouldn’t complete their enlistment contracts.” (p.2) Such turnover can be understood by many business managers in the service industry, but unlike the quick and cheap training process for them, the cost for the military (taxpayers) is astounding. The United States Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) consists of 26 Navy Recruiting Districts (NRDs) spread out throughout the Continental United States. One of the largest Recruiting Districts is NRD San Diego, which consists of 55 recruiting stations spread out throughout San Diego, Riverside, Orange County, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Yuma Arizona. The obvious mission is to recruit men and women to join the United States Navy. According to NRC webpage (2015), their mission is to “recruit the best men and women for America's Navy to accomplish today's missions and meet tomorrow's challenges” (pr. 1), Obviously, NRD San Diego shares the same mission, but there are different set of unique challenges, which trickle up from each recruiting station. The massive impact that the Merchant Marines had on the United States Navy during World War II and the Vietnam War is considered to be one of the largest impacts that the in Naval History. They Merchant Marines were undoubtedly the largest make up of the shipping throughout these two wars. A supply chain is a system through which organizations deliver their products and services to their customers. The network begins with the basic ingredients to start the chain of supply, which are the suppliers that supply raw materials, ingredients, and so on. From there, it will transfer the supplies to the manufacturer who builds, assembles, converts, or furnishes a product. The chain now needs to get the product to the consumer by transporting the finished product from the manufacturer through a warehouse or distribution center. An example is that Wal-Mart has a nearby distribution center where products are delivered there and then split up to be delivered to a retail Wal-Mart. “Wal-Mart will take responsibility for breaking down larger loads and delivering the product to other Wal-Mart stores” (Ehring 1).
Armed with numerous studies, and intensive public hearings, Congress mandated far-reaching changes in DOD organization and responsibilities in the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986. This landmark legislation significantly expanded the authority and responsibility of the chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Included in this expanded authority and responsibility was the requirement for the chairman to develop a doctrine for the joint employment of armed forces. As operations Urgent Fury, Just Cause, and Desert Storm have vividly demonstrated, the realities of armed conflict in today's world make the integration of individual service capabilities a matter of success or failure, life or death. Furthermore, the operation Desert One demonstrated the need for a strengthened Joint Warfare Doctrine and the consequent change in Joint Warfare Employment. It is plain to see the benefits of having the greatest navy integrated with the world's greatest army and air force. However, even in the wake of a relatively successful joint operation in the Middle East (Desert Storm), certain weaknesses are evident in the current joint employment tactics and/or capabilities. By analyzing past operations such as Urgent Fury and Desert Storm, we are able to see sufficient evidence that the Joint Warfare Concept can be disastrous in one instance and virtually flawless in another.
Another lesson of the game materialized gradually at first, but steadily became more and more evident with each round of play. This lesson was the demonstration of the overwhelming ineffectiveness and utter futility of approaching logistics from the position of total ignorance. With no forecast or sales history to serve as a guide or predictive tool, the participating supply elements simply had nothing to base their projected order quantities upon other than pure conjecture. Operating in a vacuum relative to the other players of the supply chain was nothing less than counterproductive. Closely related was the development of a subdued, but underlying, sense of hostility within the supply chain as orders were placed that didn’t correspond with anticipated amounts. When this type of communication breakdown exists in the real world, an irritation between supply elements invariably manifests itself. Additionally, the resulting waste of time, material, storing of inventory and other resources expenses further fuel the fires of frustration and discord between supply elements.

This article adds value to the class by going into detail and providing examples of every pitfall the supply chain management can encounter, by doing so, it makes it easier to understand and visually how the supply chain management works. The supply chain management has various parts to it, and it can be hard to understand, but after reading this article and having so many different examples of situations, I see all the opportunities that come from pitfalls and I am aware of all the problems that can happen in order to avoid making them.
