Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Jonas Salk once said, “If all the insects were to disappear from the earth, within 50 years all life on earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish.” History is filled with vast destruction of nature all caused by humans for their own selfish reasons. This is clearly depicted in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The film follows a brave and loving princess named Nausicaä who lives in a world filled by “Toxic Jungle”. While the rest of humanity seeks to destroy these jungles, Nausicaä embraces its nature along with its inhabitants. Throughout the film, Nausicaä attempts to mediate between the mysterious …show more content…
Firstly, the film begins by showing the costs of man’s destruction of the environment. The “Seven Days of Fire” had been a war fought one thousand years ago using genetically engineered bioweapons. This war eradicated all the previous nature in the world, and brought about the emergence of the “Toxic Jungle”. The jungle covers the entire ecosphere with the exception of a few remaining civilizations. The jungle is extremely lethal to humans and is inhabited by monstrous insects called Ohm. However, a young princess named Nausicaä explores the jungle in order to save both the environment and humanity. The jungle represents what will happen to the world if humanity continues its reckless acts of destruction. The kind Nausicaä plays the part of the overlooked minority, those who want to put a stop to the deterioration of …show more content…
To prevent any rebellion, the soldiers banish Nausicaä along with any other residents who are against using the bioweapon to wipe out the jungles. However, the ship transporting them crashes into a ravine within the toxic jungle. It is there that Nausicaä realizes that the toxic jungles are cleansing the topsoil of the waste left by the bioweapon during the Seven Days of Fire. Underneath the toxic jungle is rich soil along with fresh flowing water. Nausicaä returns to the soldiers, only to find that an even more extremist group has destroyed her village and stolen the bioweapon in order to immediately destroy the jungle. Nausicaä informs them of what lies underneath the jungle and pleads them to stop. However, they capture her to prevent any further revolt. The group who stole the bioweapon from the original soldiers acts as an even stronger representation of just how reckless people turn when they allow their passion for destruction to take hold of them. Even after Nausicaä tells them of what they are destroying, they continue their plan to use the bioweapon. This shows how a majority of people in our society understand the costs of war or tearing down the rainforests, but continue to support it. Nausicaä manages to escape, but finds out that the extremist group has lured thousands of furious Ohm to the village by kidnapping and wounding an
d. Both stories indicate that the ecological footprint of people is greater than the biological capacity for resource renewal. The Lorax shows that Once-ler only cared about his own benefits without thinking about the harm he gives to the resources that are not renewable. The Lorax presents that the society does not believe in sustainable practices and overconsumes the resources. To live sustainably, the society should rely on source of energy that can be replenished, use matter, control population growth and depend on local biodiversity. Like the Lorax, the Truax also does not indicate practicing sustainability. It presents the occurring deforestation and how people get maximum benefits from it. In comparison to Once-ler, Truax understands
Humans can not be the only thing that is hurting the Earth. When you really think about it, Earth goes through a lot of natural disasters, which cannot be controlled. According to an activist, Tim Haering, “Tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, disease nature kills more than we kill each other.” Earth throws in all of these natural ...
As soon as the novel begins, we are introduced to the concept of saving the environment. The book begins with the narrator explaining his life-long dream of helping the world. He says that the cultural revolution of the 1960’s contributed to his ambition. However, as time went on he
The Barbiloo bears had to leave their homes because the trees provided food for the bears. Also the birds were forced to leave after the air had become contaminated with awful gases that filled the air. The fish also played victim, the water had also been contaminated from all the toxins being thrown into the water. The Lorax and The Silent Spring tell close to the same story and have the same story. They look at what having factories, communities and, humans and what it can do in an environment without out our
Through all of this heartbreak that Komunyakaa has seen within his community, the thought that he can come up with a lesson through this turmoil on what should not be done and to convey it to the world gives an idea of how Komunyakaa wants other parts of nature not to end up the way that his did. In his essay, Komunyakaa states that he has “never been sentimental about nature (Komunyakaa 110). Throughout being in Bogalusa, Komunyakaa grew accustomed to the deterioration in which his environment was partaking, and decided to take it in as an unfortunate reality, unlike Wordsworth, who found the beautiful parts of nature and isolated them into appearing as that small part of nature was reality. Komunyakaa, however, in his loss of sentiment for nature, introduces a viewpoint associated with realism, finally at inner peace with the deterioration and pollution, as he figures that there will be justice in the end. Komunyakaa ends his essay with describing how “nature teaches us how to see ourselves within its greater domain”, and how “we cannot wound Mother Nature without wounding ourselves”, describing Mother Nature not being “a pushover” (Komunyakaa
Nomads of the Rainforest is a film which focuses on a tribe in Ecuador called the Waorani. The purpose of this documentary is to discover how this culture has maintained their cultural identity amidst Western culture and remained an enigma. The Waorani were known as savages and likely to attack any outside influence indiscriminately. These people were a mystery due to the fact that their savagery was brushed against the landscape of an egalitarian society in which all people were equal and must contribute to their society. The message of the film is to describe the Waorani lifestyle and how the rainforest is critical to their maintaining their nomadic lifestyle that has been a part of their culture for centuries.
The first two acts of this film are truly inspiring because they capture the "fire" of the environmental movement. It chronologically begins by discussing the origins of conservative environmentalists, to documenting the details of successful environmental movements, and concluding by explaining the merging of civil rights with environmentalists. Ultimately, “A Fierce Green Fire “serves as a dynamic call for the continuing action of protecting and conserving our biosphere.

Written by Horace Miner, this essay of the people group Nacirema is an interesting look at their everyday functions. The tribe Miner describes is seemingly primal and uncivilized, and yet somewhat familiar. The entire account of these mysterious people describes unusual and strange behaviors and activities. The brief overview on the Nacirema is graphic from Miner’s point of view. When the meaning of the story becomes clear, the purpose for writing it becomes either humor or disdain.
Naturalism attempts to apply scientific ideals and division when studying the human race. In Upton Sinclair’s brutally descriptive novel, The Jungle, the literary elements of character, setting, and theme show three areas where the book illustrates naturalistic fictional trends. Characters present within naturalistic fiction typically consist of lower-class people who struggle with forces which they cannot control. Sinclair utilizes the main character Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant from Lithuania, to reveal how capitalism takes advantage over the poor and uses them for cheap labor showing no regard for their welfare.
Humans are taking over and tearing down nature without a second thought. Especially in the city, it’s hard for people to put down their phones long enough to realize the world is slowly dying. They throw thousands of pounds worth of trash in the ocean just to get it out of their way. Without realizing it, the thing that covers the majority of this world is sick, and humans are to blame. Only a couple centuries ago, one believed nature was indestructible.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, has attained worldwide recognition and acclaim since it came out. The unique worldview and human values in the film have profoundly influenced the trend of Japanese animation for more than a decade. The female protag onist, Nausicaä, is portrayed as a kindhearted, courageous, and tenacious heroine who steadily fights for the harmonization of human and nature. The characterization of Nausicaä is so successful that she won the most popular animation character award multiple times since the movie came out.
Nausicaӓ of the Valley of the Winds is another example of Miyazaki’s portrayal of the struggle between man and nature. The story and themes behind Nausicaӓ are different to those of Princes Mononoke in that it is the portrayal of nature striking back against man rather than man’s initial encroachment on nature. This theme is represented by the use of the characters, places and events that happen in the movie such as the Ohmu, Nausicaӓ’s garden, and the Princess Nausicaӓ herself. The movie follows Princess Nausicaӓ in a post-war or post-apocalyptic world where a toxic jungle is spreading across the world poisoning and killing all life that isn’t plants or insects. Nausicaӓ is different from everyone else in that she has a unique connection and
