In the astonishing film, Ex Machina, Nathan Bateman created a humanoid A.I (artificial intelligence) named Ava. Nathan is a very smart and powerful man. For example, he started coding when he was 13 years old, started his own search engine company, and now he is making robots that highly resemble humans. The main goal of Nathan is for Ava to pass a Turing test, which is a test to see if man can distinguish between artificial intelligence and humans. If Ava passes, then Nathan would be the first man to create an A.I to pass the test. To get these results, Nathan brings in one of his employees, Caleb Smith to test Ava. Caleb is a very awkward man that respects Nathan’s supremacy. When Caleb found out about Nathan’s creation of Ava, Caleb made a joke about him being a God. When this happened, Nathan referred to himself as a God throughout the film. This is quite symbolic, because the story line of this movie is closely related to the book of Genesis. For instance, God made man just as Nathan made Ava. Similarly, God made the earth in seven days whereas Nathan required seven sessions of Turing testing for Ava. Since Kyoko is the housemaid of Nathan, it makes food for him. Kyoko always obeys Nathan’s other request as well such as synchronize dancing, sex and cleaning up around the house. In one of the beginning scenes, Kyoko is filmed cutting Sushi with the knife. Although, up to this point of the film, the knife might be looked upon as an instrumental prop, being used for its intended purpose. However, it has deeper meaning. In the end of the movie, Kyoko takes the knife and both it and Ava use the knife as a weapon to kill Nathan. Therefore, the knife represents the ultimate fight and end of Nathan’s dominance.
