Have you ever had a life changing moment? In the stories Hatchet, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and The Father of Chinese Aviation the main characters all experienced life changing events. In Hatchet, Brian survives a plane crash after the pilot dies of a heart attack. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana is left to survive on her own when the rest of her tribe is killed. In The Father of Chinese Aviation, Feng Ru brings aviation to China. All of these characters encountered events that changed their lives forever. To begin with, Brian, from the story Hatchet experiences a life changing event when his pilot dies of a heart attack. A battle tore her tribe apart and when the rest sail away 12-year-old Karana and her brother Romo are left behind. Then a pack of wild dogs kills Romo, which leads Karana to fend for herself. In chapter 15 Karana crosses a dog that she had previously attacked. She was almost sure that he was dead. Right when she was about to throw the spear, the dog elevated his head from the ground. Karana then stood there for a while, not knowing what to do. Then she came to a conclusion to use her bow and arrow. She was in position to shoot the arrow, but Karana would not let it go. This shows that Karana is forgiving because this may have been one of the dogs that killed Romo. She then picked up the dog and brought it to her house. This shows that Karana likes animals. Karana cares and nourishes the dog back to health. Overall Karana passed many life changing events. She realizes what she had before and how hard it is to survive alone even in a known

Hatchet by Gary Paulson is a fiction novel about a thirteen-year-old boy named Brian that survives a plane crash after the pilot dies of a heart attack and Brian is forced to land the plane himself, and in doing so, lands in a lake around the setting of a Canadian forest. Throughout the duration of the novel, Brian is to survive this dangerous situation with nothing except for a literal hatchet that was gifted to him by his mother prior to getting on the plane to go visit his father in the Canadian North Woods as his parents are newly separated after a recent divorce. Gary Paulsen was inspired to write Hatchet from his own life and personal experiences as both of his parents gave him a hard time growing up through their rocky marriage and unstable parenting as well as the fact that he grew up in the country and had to provide for himself. Hatchet also received a 1988 Newbery Honor award for its excellency. In my opinion I think that Hatchet does a better job of telling the story better than“A Cry in the Wild”,because it tells you how he feels when he does something.For instances in “A Cry in the Wild”it doesn’t tell you how he feels when drives the airplane,but in Hatchet it says that he felt like the plain was alive in page 4 of Hatchet.Also in chapter 9 in Hatchet it said that when he built a fire he said that he felt like the fire was his friend because it got all of the bugs away that bite me.It also gave him heat and light.In the movie “A Cry in the Wild” it didn’t even say anything.It showed how he did it and boom there was fire.They did not show how he felt about what the fire felt to him and he did even say that it was his friend.All
People make bad choices in life every day, some may be recovered from whereas others have fatal consequences. A reporter named Jon Krakauer wrote a biography called Into The Wild which is about a young man named Chris McCandless who makes a fatal decision which lead to his demise in Alaska. Aron Ralton's book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place is about his near death experience from making a bad choice. His perseverance and problem solving skills become his salvation in the hot and dry terrain of Utah. Chris and Aron were both eager for adventure and both had a love for nature and the outdoors. Chris died because he lacked Aron's prior knowledge of survival tactics, making Chris ill prepared for his journey.
Gary Paulsen’s whole life reflects his life of adventures and survival in the wilderness and his writing reflects his experiences. Living in the remote Minnesota woods Paulsen released Some Birds Don't Fly in 1966 (Trelease), and began his professional writing career and now has achieved three Newbery Honor Books with his novels - Hatchet, The Winter Room and Dogsong (Pendergast). Paulsen’s most popular book, Hatchet, a story of a young boy named Brian who lands a plane after the pilot dies from a heart attack and must survive in the remote wilderness alone, reflects some of Paulsen’s real life experiences when he used to answer emergency calls and deal with many heart attack victims (Paulsen 2). The plane crash in Hatchet was also created by Paulsen after he was on the scene of a plane crash were the pilots died (Paulsen 7). Gary Paulsen’s experiences from living alone in the Minnesota woods to racing dogs in the Iditarod race has been exposed and reflected in a majority his writings.
He had to adapt from a normal teenager to a boy living in a Canadian wilderness. I am around the same age as Brian, but our lives are completely different. We are both very persistent in all the things we do. Brian is an important character in Hatchet because when he arrived in the forest, he used the hatchet his mother gave him and other resources around him to survive in a new environment. “I might be hit but I'm not done. Gary Paulsen was a medic that experienced many tragedies. While he was on his free time he made books for kids to read. While Gary was a medic, he “answered many calls to highway wrecks, farm accidents, poisonings, gunshot accidents, and many, many heart attacks” (Gary) All of these impacts affected him in many ways. Gary Paulsen had a lot of experiences with people dying from heart attacks. Gary experienced a heart attack victim dying while the victim was looking right into Gary’s eyes as he passed away. This tragedy led up to him to write Hatchet. The book Hatchet was written because despite all of his tragedies he experienced that this was the first time seeing someone die in his own hands. Main Theme: The story Hatchet’s theme is determination, perseverance and survival. Brian Robeson, whose parents are divorced, flies to visit his father in Canadian wilderness. His pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian managed to land the plane in a lake, and escape unharmed. Now comes the hard part, surviving in the wilderness until rescued. He does have one tool to help him, a hatchet that his mother had given him as a gift. He will have to use it, his own determination, imagination, perseverance and common sense to survive.
It is on some of these adventures the reader is able to see how much the protagonists are maturing. On one such trip, Ántonia gains a lot of respect for and begins to consider Jim an equal after he saves them both by chopping off the head to a huge rattlesnake. They proudly carry the enormous reptile home and Ántonia boasts about Jims bravery to his grandparents and their farmhands. Not all of Jim and Ántonia’s time together was pleasant, though.
In Jon Krakauer’s non-fiction novel Into the Wild, the well-off, upper-middle-class, Chris McCandless disappears donating all of his savings to charity and hitchhiking to Alaska to live off the land, but 119 days later he is found having starved to death at the age of 24. Chris McCandless was and still is a very heavily discussed topic due to the mysteries his death. His “Great American Odyssey” was short, but lack of divulging his plan to anyone else left it in a shroud of guesswork and minimal evidence. But despite that, there is just enough evidence to show that Chris McCandless was for the most part, at fault for his own death despite good and bad luck along the way.
Thirteen-year old Brian Robeson, the sole passenger on a small plane from Hampton, New York to the north woods of Canada, boards the aircraft excited at the notion of flying in a single-engine plane. After the novelty of the experience passes, Brian returns to his thoughts of his parents' recent divorce. Brian recalls the fights between his parents and his hatred for the lawyers who attempt to cheerfully explain to him how the divorce will affect his life. What Brian calls "The Secret" also enters his consciousness, and at this point we do not know to what "The Secret" refers. Brian feels the burn of tears come to his eyes, but does not cry, making certain to guard his eyes from the pilot, whose name Brian cannot exactly remember. He suspects it is Jim or Jake, a man in his mid-forties who has been virtually silent during the ride. Seeing Brian marvel at the complexity of the control panel in front of him, the pilot offers him a chance to fly the plane himself. Initially reluctant, Brian declines the offer. Upon the pilot's insistence, he takes the wheel and for a few minutes has complete control of the plane.
Living on your own brings in many new ideas and adventures. Karana has many hard decisions to make, when she has to decided to go with childhood teaching or fending for herself. " I wonder what would happen to me if I went against the law of our tribe which forbade the making of weapons by women… would the four winds blow in from the four directions of the world and smother me as I made the weapons? Or would the earth tremble, as many said, and bury me beneath its falling rocks?" The choice to build weapons saves her life and brings her a wonderful friend. "He stood facing me, his front legs spread as if he was ready to spring. The arrow struck him in the chest." This dog had been her enemy he killed her brother and she had vowed revenge on him she had gotten what she wanted, yet she had not killed the dog just wounded him. "Why I did not send the arrow I cannot say. I stood on the rock with the bow pulled back and my hand would not let it go. The big dog lay there and did not move and this may be the reason. If he would have gotten up I would have killed him. I stood there for a long time looking down at him and then I climbed off the rocks and picked him up." This dog became her friend and he salvation. It must have been lonely and she made many friends, otters, she had birds anything to keep her busy.
During life, we face turning points which could be difficult. Melba Pattillo Beals, Jackie Robinson, and Feng Ru all experienced life-changing events that impacted their countries.
