Prologue:
Changing the world was not a job for a single man—not a normal one at least. It was something that life, along with those around him, never failed to remind him. At some point even he used to think like that, believing that living in such a world was meaningless, having no dreams or goals to pursue. He dropped University two times, worked only enough to survive and even his family gave up on him eventually.
Thankfully, he managed to turn around his life and find a purpose.
One day he ran into a certain high school teacher. He was the kind of teacher that liked to preach about the future and wanting to change his students for society’s sake. At the time he thought it was a foolish goal, but now… now he made up his mind to pursue

He did not feel pain, after all.
“…don't worry, boy…” His voice came out softer than expected.
The boy realized that his teacher was awake, and brought his face closer to hear better. “What?” His voice trembled.
“…you’re the future of the world, I can’t let you get harmed, right?…” He felt that it was the perfect opportunity to persuade the boy to get a hold of his future. “…sorry for the cheese words…” He coughed trying to laugh. “…just stop losing your time and focus on your future. I know you can become someone great…” Now after a good performance, he could be at ease and leave everything else for the paramedics. He doubted that a small accident like that would cause him any permanent damage. Maybe he would be limping for a few months. Not that bad.
“…now let me sleep. I'm tired…remember to not slack off and be diligent…” Devin took a long breath and his consciousness began to fade. The boy surely would listen to his words. He couldn't wait to see what the boy would become in the future. “…see you later in class…” He exhaled.
“Teacher?” The boy shook his teacher’s body, but there was no
William Manchester, the author, wanted us to comprehend that it is goal-oriented people such as Desiderius Erasmus who doubtlessly have all the capacity to alter the world. As Erasmus once said, “There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are those who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other”. If people do not have faith in themselves and work hard towards their goals, then they will never reach said desired goals and continuously remorse the days that they did not take advantage of.
He gave up the comfort of his home to go out into the wild. He gives away his possessions, something society values too much. He gives his money to charity and burns the money he has left in his wallet. He began a simple life hitchhiking, finding food and shelter in the wild and being adventurous with the land and sights around him. In this way, making a statement that he rejects the social views and values of property in the search of a higher purpose within nature.
One man never gets to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes from doing things by or for himself. All will have been done collectively for him, thus something fundamental is missing from his life. This can be likened to the pride Equality 7-2521 feels after hunting and preparing his own food in the forest (Rand, 1946, p. 63). He finds happiness in doing things for himself. This idea can be found in many instances, such as while he is studying in the tunnel (Rand, 1946, p. 30). The invention he makes there becomes so important to him that he is willing to be beaten and later leave everything behind in order to protect it, and such is a testament to his desire for independence and strides toward acting on his own
Ever since he was younger he had questioned the way things were because he knew that there was more too things than he had been taught. It is very clear that in the world we live in today that great things continue to flourished due to individual strengths and strategies. Many of these successes have helped many people around the world and have made life better for people. So when it comes to him having the right to know that he can do great things and help other people, is something special that he deserves to know about and use that as a
...him reach the truth. But he didn’t stop, he pushed on until he beat his dilemma. It was this mentality that helped him to succeed, he knew what he wanted to do and he wasn’t stopping until he achieved that.
...s is related to his philosophy about doing the right thing and about a being a good person. But it goes beyond this. He spoke often about having true compassion. It isn’t enough to help those in need, but we must truly care about them, to take a good look and see how they got that way. He asked us to examine how we as a society can change the conditions that led them to be there in the first place. Doing this makes us better as people. I have found that it also makes me feel better. Never give up on your dreams. While his life was cut tragically short, he died in pursuit of his dream and in spite of everything he faced, he never gave up on it. He faced obstacles I could never imagine having to face, and still persisted. This reminds me that the small things in my life that often seem insurmountable, are just my excuses for not taking action and are not obstacles.
In 2009 Chimamanda Adichie gave a TED talk about the ‘danger of a single story’. A single story meaning, one thought or one example of a person becoming what we think about all people that fit that description, a stereotype if you will. In today’s America, I believe that we have all felt the wave of stereotypical views at some point or another. Adichie gives many relatable examples throughout her life of how she has been affected by the single story. Her story brings about an issue that all humans, from every inch of the earth, have come to understand on some level. A young child reading only foreign books, a domestic helper that she only perceived as poor. Her college roommates single story about Africans and her own formation of a single
The writer's purpose in this piece is to inform their audience that if one changes oneself they can make a difference in the world, hence inspire people to change their ways to "make the world a better place".
Shakespeare wrote, “To thine own self be true.” The beginning of Social Change encompasses the beliefs, qualities, and values of individuals. Change is inevitable whether virtuous or corrupt. Consequently, in society virtuous and corrupt change is present. Thus, individuals must be conscious of self in order to contribute effectively to a group. In addition, surety in one’s philosophies, abilities, standards enables the individual to establish sound opinions based on these defined attributes. Nevertheless, individuals with substantial flaws in their character poses a threat to the survival of self, a group, and a community. In other words, the individual becomes an endangered species; as well as, an endangerment to the survival of a group or community. Educators have the stage to assist in promoting positive social change. Therefore, I work to influence social change through educating the minds of our youths and mentoring new teachers.
My whole life, I have been presented to a single element called change. Change occurs in many different forms and is carried out in many different ways. However, just recently, I have come to the realization that change can be the deepest of all subjects. I always assumed that change occured when you moved to a new town or when you lost someone close to you. Those are elements to change, yes, but change doesn't have to occur over a single dramatic event. It can just happen overnight when your brain determines it's time to do something different.
Although we may not all see eye to eye, we all still have our own worldview. The central idea of a worldview is to be the different beliefs that is an understanding of how we see the world around us. It will be understood by how a person feels about different emotions and ideas that are encountered on a daily basis. A worldview is a response of our heart or inner being: our intellect, emotion and will. (Weider, Gutierrez,59) We create our own personal worldview based on things we believe are true and norms to society. A worldview perspective shapes, influences, and generally directs a person's entire life. (Samples 2007)
I really like Linh Do she had a unique way of getting her point across and she didn’t try to elaborate on social norms as like she said its unique for all of us and it hit home about what she said about the fork in the road because I had to make the same decision and my parents didn’t pressure me to do any of the above when I graduated. I got told that I should start making a decision about my future but I wasn’t given the ultimatum of go to college or get out of the house. I was glad that these were not thrust upon me and having the freedom to choose was one that I think made me a better person and gave me the chance to choose my path and make my own mistakes which I think were important in me becoming the person that I am today.
What is stated above happens around us all the time. Something might be proven today, but proven wrong tomorrow. Therefore I completely agree to this statement. But how do we accept something to be knowledge, and what makes one thing knowledge and the other thing just a theory? We can look at it from various aspects.
We all have those days where we feel so hopeless or unable to do anything right. We have all felt that we couldn’t finish school or other life challenges. We question everything about life, that’s what happened with me. I had never had a normal life and now it takes a turn for the worse. I grew up under the circumstances that forced me to become more responsible and mature, which has enabled me to succeed later in life.
“Why don’t you use your locker? You’re going to have back problems before you even graduate”. These are words that are repeated to me daily, almost like clockwork. I carry my twenty-pound backpack, full of papers upon papers from my AP classes. The middle pouch of my backpack houses my book in which I get lost to distract me from my unrelenting stress. The top pouch holds several erasers, foreshadowing the mistakes I will make - and extra lead, to combat and mend these mistakes. Thick, wordy textbooks full of knowledge that has yet to become engraved in my brain, dig the straps of my backpack into my shoulders. This feeling, ironically enough, gives me relief - my potential and future success reside in my folders and on the pages of my notebooks.
