Sophomore year in High School, I met this girl named Kiarra. She is so sweet, and we became friends. One day at lunch we were talking, and she happened to mention that her father and sister both had a disorder called Narcolepsy. This was very intriguing. So many questions ran through my head. First of all, what is Narcolepsy? I then wondered, What would it be like to attend school with such an inhibitor? And were there things that could be done to ease the obstacles and struggles that go along with this disorder? Here is what I have found. To begin I’d like to describe what Narcolepsy actually is, and if you are like me you haven’t the slightest idea. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes, “excessive sleepiness, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and in some cases episodes of cataplexy (partial or total loss of muscle control, often triggered by a strong emotion such as laughter).” Which means that you cannot control when or where you fall asleep, you are delusional, have very vivid nightmares, or sudden muscle twinges. While many people are diagnosed at early ages, some don’t recognize the symptoms until adulthood. “ Narcolepsy is diagnosed …show more content…
After some research I have found a few of the accommodations given to students with narcolepsy. One that I was particularly interested in was the acceptance of service dogs. “Service dogs play a major part in the rehabilitation and on going support for people with narcolepsy…[A] service dog will be specifically trained to help [you]... work and do other daily activities...They will also [alert] when [you are] going to have an attack. They do this by barking, nudging, and licking”(Gow). After putting myself in the shoes of Kiarra’s older sister, I have come to the conclusion that this accommodation would be most useful in the majority of cases. That way taking extra time out of the day will not be an issue, and it allows for a more normal, and better quality

Millions of people suffer from the same tossing and turning every which way, getting their sheets all disarranged and their insistent minds abundantly worse. Patients often proclaim indications of insomnia while sitting in the family health clinic. Insomnia traits include hindrance falling asleep, continueing to awaken, and rejuvenating before wanted. One may suffer from insomnia if one shows signs of an increased difficulty in attentiveness, decreased communal or scholastic skills, and a diminished mood or enthusiasm. (Foldvary-Schaefer 111). Countless individuals deal with insomnia for a large amount of their lives and some choose differing treatments, while some do not use any treatments at all. While never being uncommon, the amounts of causes leading to insomnia come in boundlessly; finding new studies and stories every day.
Each year at least 40 million Americans suffer from long term, persistent sleep disorders, and an additional 20 million experience occasional sleeping problems. About 60 million Americans a year have insomnia and it tends to increase with age and affects about 40 percent of women and 30 percent of men. It is estimated that 18 million Americas are suffering from sleep apnea, 12 million have RLS, and 250,000 are affected by narcolepsy. Adults typically need between 6 and 10 hours of sleep per 24 hour period, and most people need approximately 8 hours of sleep per day. The health topic I’m covering today is epilepsy which is a neurological disorder that is caused by excessive or abnormal activity in the neural areas of the brain. Epilepsy causes a series of seizures and it does not discriminate when it comes to the person, age, or race. This disease can have a major effect on a person by interrupting their daily lives and health. In ancient times there was very little knowledge about epilepsy.

Sleep paralysis is a condition that occurs at either the onset or upon awakening of sleep. The medical terms for the two forms of sleep paralysis are hypnogogic and hypnopompic (1). When a person falls asleep, the body secretes hormones that relax certain muscles within the body, causing it to go into paralysis. Doing this prevents the body from acting out a person's dream, which could result in an injury. Sleep paralysis generally runs within one's family or in those who suffer from narcolepsy (2), but there is currently no explanation for why some people get it while others do not.
The phenomenon of sleep paralysis can be a frightening experience: many who suffer can feel tremendous anxiety and fear, even though occurrences are considered as harmless as a bad dream. The disorder does not discriminate on the basis of race or gender, but age sometimes is a factor. Treatment for sleep paralysis is limited; in general, doctors treat the disorders linked to sleep paralysis such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy. Sleep paralysis continues to be one of the many mysteries of the human brain, which science will continue to investigate.
Sleep disorders are an underestimated public health concern considering that fifty to seventy million Americans are affected. Technological advances in the field of sleep have facilitated various theories to explain the need for and the purpose of sleep. Scientist have uncovered many types of sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Sleep disorders affect men ,women, children, the elderly, and the obese in different ways. Factors such as the number of children and the effects of menopause have been studied to determine their effects on sleep. Various treatments have been utilized ranging from non-pharmacologic to pharmacologic methods. Scientist have pinpointed areas of the brain that are involved in sleep deprivation and hormones that ultimately affect sleep.

The topic of my persuasive speech is the lack of sleep in a student's life, the harm it causes, the solutions to this problem and the positive effects of sufficient sleep. My goal as a speaker will be to change my audience’s attitudes and receive the reaction of a change in sleeping habits. Since “trying to change an audience’s attitudes is easier than attempting to change their values” (Beebe & Beebe, 139), my goal will be achieved in five minutes using a variety of persuasive methods. My main method of persuasion will be ethos.
Hi stemians! My article for you today discusses the importance of children getting adequate sleep. The human body needs to get plenty of rest to function properly. Sleep is needed to keep us healthy. As a teacher, I constantly see students come to school who are tired because they didn't get a full night of rest.
Sleep is a very important part of our lives and every human being needs it to survive. Sleep is one of the necessary things we need along with eating and drinking. Although you may not think you need that much sleep you may be surprised how badly a loss of sleep can affect you. So the real question is what happens when you do not get the sleep you need and how can you tell that you have a loss of sleep. Why do we even need sleep and is it really important as we think it is?
