Sleep is a very important part of our lives and every human being needs it to survive. Sleep is one of the necessary things we need along with eating and drinking. Although you may not think you need that much sleep you may be surprised how badly a loss of sleep can affect you. So the real question is what happens when you do not get the sleep you need and how can you tell that you have a loss of sleep. Why do we even need sleep and is it really important as we think it is? How does a loss of sleep affect our everyday lives and what do we need to do to insure that our health is good. The first way your body tells you this is just by you being drowsy. The second way is when you really start dozing off and almost falling asleep, at this point your appearance takes a toll. You start to get dark circle under your eyes and your entire body sort of sags. The last stage is when your body actually starts to make you fall asleep and this is where it can get dangerous. Unlike eating or drinking your body will get sleep regardless if you care or not. So this is exceptionally dangerous especially if someone is driving during this stage because the driver could fall asleep at the wheel. These effects will happen to everyone no matter who you are. Your body takes a real toll when you do not sleep. The average adult is getting one and a half hours less of sleep per night than the average adult did 100 years ago ( zoldean 2017). This may not seem very significant but one and a half hours of sleep is much more significant than you would think. One and a half hours is like taking a nap after a really long day of work. It's just enough to make you feel better but it also doesn't take up much time. Sleep deprivation can lead to higher risk of chronic health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. According to Harvard Medical School, for people with hypertension, one night without enough sleep can cause elevated blood pressure all through the next day. (Healthline 2017). When getting a good night's rest your body uses this time to build up the immune system and also remember many events that happened throughout the day.
