A website where doctors can answer questions for parents addressed the issue of narcissistic parenting. One point made was that “These children may have no sense of themselves or what they want or need. The parent's grandiosity eclipsed the child so completely that it resulted in a person who has no idea who they really are as an individual”. One of the qualities of a narcissistic person is an increased sense of self importance. This causes the parent to pay attention more to themselves and not their child. The parent is more interested in what the child can do for them instead of what the child can do for themself. This causes the child to always think that everything they do should be for the parent and to make the parent happy instead of a parent trying to do everything they can for the child. This leaves the child to think they are not as important and not know what they want for themself when they finally move out and have to move on to bigger things. By raising a child to only go after things that the parent wants, the child will never have the opportunity to experience what they enjoy doing and figure out what they want to do in life, only what the parent’s idea is for them. This will eventually lead to a child who doesn't know how to do
