I believe that leadership is the process of making a lasting and meaningful impact on the hearts and minds of others in order to build a team and accomplish a shared goal. From the leadership examples I experienced personally and from BOTC/OCS, the five pillars of my leadership philosophy are integrity, initiative, accountability, communication, and compassion. Incorporating these pillars into a person’s life will not only make them a better follower, but will also help them earn their peers, subordinates, and seniors’ respect, forgiveness, and willingness to be led. One of the most influential leaders in my life is my dad, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Daniel “Brian” Hendrickson. Brian received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in May 1987 and after a tour as a division officer aboard the USS Aquila (PHM-4), he transferred to Naval Special Warfare (NSW) and completed Basic …show more content…

After reporting to the NOAA Ship Rainier, I intend to fully utilize all five pillars of my leadership philosophy to become a valued member of the overall team. This is because I will be the most novice member of a highly experienced team composed of wage mariners in the deck and engineering departments, junior and senior NOAA Corps officers, and some of the world’s top scientists. Earning the respect of everyone within this team is my first step towards becoming a leader, and to do so, I anticipate that I will have to work harder than I previously thought possible. At BOTC/OCS, I witnessed how embracing integrity, initiative, accountability, communication, and compassion impacts the growth and effectiveness of a team. I observed my shipmates succeed in influencing others as leaders by exhibiting these traits, as well as those who lost the respect of their shipmates for not doing
