Throughout this year, my writing and reading skills have improved considerably. In the past, English has been a relatively smooth class for me although I do struggle with some finer points such as certain grammatical concepts. I usually enjoy English class because I love reading for fun and enjoy writing creatively. Outside of school, I do gymnastics at JETS, tumble and polish rocks, read a lot of fiction books, play cello and walk my naughty beagle named Riley. After this year in English with Ms. Ekman, I have found that my writing has developed substantially. I love to do creative writings and setting descriptions and recieved my best scores on those writings comparatively to other standards from the beginning to end of the year. Furthermore, by the middle of the year, I was able to improve my creative writing skills even further and started to create more detailed imagery which allowed me to receive consistent 4s for the remainder of the year on creative writing (“FW#18” 1). Informational writing is an area that I do not struggle in, but do not excel in either. Towards the beginning of the year, I was only able to write at the surface of informational writing and did not go into enough detail in my writing. For example, I use the sentence, “Joe values happiness over money and would rather live a simple and happy life, than a life with tons of money but full of hatred and regret” to make a claim about Joe but later did not back it up with enough evidence and text support so that it seemed reliable (“FW#4” 6). Fortunately, my informational writing has improved greatly since this previous writing and I am now able to make claims and use text evidence to elaborate on the points I am making. I find non-fiction books a lot more challenging because I read them a lot less. When we read Great Expectations at the beginning of the year, I was first unsure of how to go about analyzing the book but later developed a system. I find it beneficial to me to put sticky notes on pages with important information or a distinct example of symbolism or imagery that may help me analyze the book better when I look back at them in the future. Unfortunately, I cannot effectively use this method with poetry. I find that I analyze poetry better when I read the whole piece, and then focus on each line individually. This way, I can pick out important symbols with more precision and understand the overall meaning of the text more thoroughly. An example of when I utilized this method is when we read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The lines often had complex or hidden meanings that forced me to think critically of every word that may have some symbolism attached to
