My Work Experience: My Wide-Spectrum Veterinary Career

For as long as I can remember I have been engrossed by the animal kingdom, and as I have been growing up my fascination has only increased and my aspiration to learn about what went wrong and how to discover ways to solve the problem, especially in relation to the welfare of animals. I have invaluable experience with working with livestock as I have grown up on a suck cow farm. As well as growing up in this environment I have attained several weeks of work experience. The work experience I have undertaken has given me a realistic insight into what the entire wide-spectrum veterinary career consists of, including the highs and the lows. There I saw lots of intriguing operations, such as a suspected Left Displaced Abomasum (LDA). But the operation that stands out most is assisting the vet with a caesarean section. It involved pulling the calf out of the uterus as quickly as possible, and the calf must be pulled up and out to avoid further damage to the site of incision. Also I held the uterus up using tongue holding forceps, while the vet was stitching the uterus up. I contribute to school life as much as possible, for example being part of my school’s production of ‘Made in Dagenham’ in 2016. I have been involved with music from a very early stage. I take part in competitions individually and in groups. I have gone on to represent my county and province at the All Ireland stage on several occasions. On the 1st of April 2016, I attained my grade 8 in the London College of Music for Irish Traditional Music on the piano accordion. I enjoy expressing and improving my musical skills to other people. Music has taught me many life skills such as commitment, teamwork, listening and communication skills. For many summer months now, I have been working on building sites. I have learned that time management is essential to get all jobs done as well as multi-tasking.
