One: Development Over Time Over the course of My Virtual Life, my child Lucy displayed increasingly strong academic and intellectual abilities as she got older. She showed higher success in writing, art, and music than math and science. The first signs that she excelled in these subjects were at her kindergarten screening at age 5. She tested above average in her vocabulary skills and recall ability, as well as taking a special interest in art activities in class. As she got older, most if not all of her report cards read that she demonstrated strength in language arts and art, but required additional help in mathematics and science. Children in the study that had authoritative parents were reported to be more happy and successful. As an example, Lucy rarely was upset or angry, aside from the occasional outburst. She also was above average in school, as stated before. These children are also good at making their own decisions, as evident when Lucy decided that she needed to improve her grades and without any help from me, was able to achieve high grades in her most difficult classes. Lastly, these children are comfortable sharing their opinions with others and expressing their emotions. Conscientiousness is defined as being thorough, careful, or vigilant, and the desire to do a task well. Those qualities were continuously developed as Lucy grew up, from when she was younger and studied how to build blocks, to when she was in high school and was able to improve her math and science grades. The development of this trait is one of the most important aspects of Lucy’s academic success, making her more or less apt to be driven, motivated, and heedful in her tasks and studies. In the study, Luciano and her colleagues looked at adoptive parents and their children, as well as twins of biological parents. They found that the variance in conscientiousness scores consisted of 29% of genetic dominance (Luciano). In addition, positive correlations were found between competence and dutifulness with the IQ and academic achievement scores.
