For these questions to be answered, we have to understand what self-concept is. Self-concept is a person’s description of who the person thinks he or she is. Basically, it is filtered through our own perceptions of ourselves. 1. Attitudes that I have that create or shape my self-concept: 1) I like to read – I feel this shapes my identity because it has allowed me to learn new words and think interpret things differently. I also create a label of being a intelligent person due to reading any book I can get and exploring more things. 2) I like to sing – I feel this shapes my identity because it allows me to be myself or sociable when I want to be. Actually, when I 'm with friends, I sometimes do become more comfortable. I also create a label of being a “more being myself” person with friends and show my artistic side. 3) I don 't like to speak in front of people – I feel this shapes my identity because it makes me so shy. People that I communicate with that make me feel good about myself: 1) My English teacher, Mr. Smither – My awesome teacher told me that one day I will be confident to talk to everyone that I encounter. He made feel good about myself when I would started discussing more in class. He said, “J.D., you used to hate discussion. Ever since I had you last year, I believed in you to overcome your shyness. Not only did you improved but you are not scared to be social with people anymore. You are going to be great in college.” I never will forget that moment that happened in the beginning of this year. 2) My mom – My mom always tells me that I will do great things and change the world because of how nice I am. I do believe her words. She made me feel good about myself when she saw that I gave money to a charity with my allowance money. I didn 't need to use my allowance money for the charity. However, I did use my allowance money because I deeply care for everyone’s lives. She loved that I did that generous thing and knew she had a good
In terms of my personal identity, I would say that based on my experiences throughout my life, I considered myself to be hard working, especially when it comes to pursuing my goals; honest; generous, I like taking
Self-esteem has to do with the value you place on yourself and your abilities regardless of what anyone thinks or says. According to Smith and Mackie in 2007, Self-Esteem was defined as follows: “The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it.”
“It’s a blessed thing that in every stage in every age some one has had the individuality and courage enough to stand by his own convictions.” The part of me that sums up my identity best is not the adjectives given by family, or the faults I find in myself. My identity is my desire to better myself, and my passion for children. My identity is who I want to be and what I do to accomplish my goals My identity is the feelings and emotions I pour into my journal every day, and the way I feel when I do something right. My identity is not what others thing of me or what I think of myself after a bad day. My identity is the love and confidence I have in myslef, and the beauty inside.
Amy was a recently graduated psychologist who had just opened up a new practice. John, her friend since grade school, calls her up in the middle of the night. It was immediately apparent that he was in distress and he tells her that he needs someone to talk to. He begins to confide in her about how his life has gone downhill lately, at first losing his employment and then his house. This increase in stress has also led to marital problems because he has been taking it out on his wife and it has turned into physical fights. His wife has now left him and he has become really depressed even having thoughts of hurting himself sometimes.
Saul McLeod(2008) said that the term self-concept is a general term used to refer to how someone thinks about, evaluates or perceives themselves. To be aware of oneself is to have a concept of oneself.
In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.
Since early years of human existence people were trying to find out who they are. There is a question which every person asked himself at least once during his life. If someone asks you: “Who are you?” What would you say? You will start to describe yourself by classifying to one group or another. But does it really make you who you are? Or does it make any difference how you define yourself? The way you describe yourself will have an effect on your actions. According to dictionary, identity is the fact of being who the person is. It is linked to specific aspects of self-definition (Deaux, 1992). If you know that you are a horrible person, your actions will be the once that match with this characteristic. And if you are a kind person, most probably you will be doing good things. So, our identity has a great influence on our lives. In order to change anything we should firstly understand who we are. Then the question rises. How can we define our identity?
Self-concept can be described as how a person views themselves. There is a variety of factors that impact a person’s self-concept but the biggest impact comes from self-esteem. Self-esteem is much like self-concept the only difference is the addition of emotions. For example say an individual likes a brand they are aware that they enjoy the brand so that’s self-concept. Self-esteem on the other hand, if nobody else in the workplace likes the brand programme individual likes that could have a negative effect on a person’s self-esteem and therefore effect a person’s self-concept. In the workplace self-concept is of the uttermost importance when estab...
Erik Erikson composed a theory of psychological development that was composed of eight stages. Erikson’s theory focuses on how personalities evolve throughout life as a result of the interaction between biologically based maturation and the demands of society. According to Erikson, “Each stage of human development presents its characteristic crises. Coping well with each crisis makes an individual better prepared to cope with the next.” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 314) According to Erikson’s eight stages of development, I have only been through six of the eight stages.
Self-concept is defined as the knowledge, a multi-dimensional construct, of an individu-al’s perception one may have about his or herself such as personality traits, physical characteris-tics, abilities, values, goals, and roles. During my infancy stage, I started to organize and acquire information, which helped me to recognize the perception of self in the social world. As a child, I learned how to interact in the social world from the environment and my learning experiences. The self-concept is an internal model, which refers to my physical characteristics, hobbies, occu-pation, abilities, skills, personality, etc. My self-concepts refer to my personal social identity. A significant factor in self-concept is an individual’s self-perceptions and how he or she interacts in the social world is.
Your daily routine is what forges your identity. I spent most of my free time in high school playing video games with my friends. This has led to me meeting a group of people who are similar to me that I have grown really close to. This is what identity if for. Finding other people like yourself. When you have an idea of what you like and what you enjoy doing you have an easier time meeting people that are similar or just have similar interests. And what people do in their free time. The things that you enjoy doing is what can have the biggest effect on a persons identity as theses are the things that you go out of way to
One of the things that my professor told me that I still find to be very helpful was to practice in the mirror or family and friends prior to the day of the presentation and make sure that I always pick a subject that I have a little of knowledge about. Now, I cannot say that I am the best speech giver, I still get nervous when about to do a presentation but from where I was to where I am now I can say that I have come a long way and I have accomplished so much. Even though, it took a lot of time but I am grateful. It really hard to find a professor who is willing to do so much to help a student. Most professors would have told me that high school have prepared me for all that but my public speaking professor did not neglect my needs and that has inspired me to be the best teacher that I can
Self concept is not inherent. It is shaped and reshaped by the people around us, the people who influence us directly or indirectly. Self concept of a child depends upon the description provided to him by these people e.g. parents, teachers, peers etc. it may be correct or incorrect as it is formed by the people, how they see the child e.g. if the family members tell the child constantly that he / she is lazy, the child starts to see himself/ herself as lazy. However due to the subjective opinion of family members it may not be correct
Hi, my name is Rob Geis and I am currently in grade 12. I have been at County High School for a year now; I joined at the start of 11th grade, and have thoroughly enjoyed myself here. The school is great, the people are fantastic and the atmosphere is one that makes you actually want to go to school. Before I joined ASB I was studying at the Singapore American School for two years and prior to that I was at the International School of Kuala Lumpur for two years. I was born and raised here in Bombay city and grew up here.
People all over the world have accomplished things that made them who they are today. Overcoming shyness was a huge accomplishment and something that was very significant to me that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood.
