I believe that by nature, people are inquisitive. The curiosity that can stem from and start in the classroom can expand into a love for life long learning. I think the main focus of education should be to encourage and facilitate that advancement of knowledge. While there are many things that an effective teacher must possess, I believe these are the most important: 1. Establishing a rich classroom overflowing with positive, interactive community, 2. Having a predictable environment children can recognize, 3. Incorporating thoughtful and intentional text choices, and 4. a teacher must encourage and model behavior that reinforces and nurtures each child to be the very best they can possibly be.
I believe the extent of growth and knowledge each child can possess starts at the beginning with community. When a classroom has respectful, caring, and engaged students, the opportunities for learning can take place constantly. The way a teacher interacts with students models the type of language and behavior they want used in the classroom. I believe that education should be looked as as a desire to acquire all possible knowledge, not as a requirement or something that can be formally examined by standardized tests. There are numerous ways that children learn and I want to be able to encourage as much learning as possible for each child. I believe that using many methods of instruction is the most effective way of teaching to these various ways of learning. These methods include group work, hands-on activities, buddy work, etc. Assessment of children should follow the same idea. When children get the chance to perform on different assessments, they can adequately show their strengths and weaknesses. I do not wish to rely on tests only to assess the students in my class. Some types of assessment that I think should be inlcuded in a classroom are journals, presentations, projects and interviews. I also think that the classroom should be run with the help of the children. By distributing jobs among the children and everyone participating in the classroom, the students will form a sense of togetherness. This will eventually create a community within the classroom. I feel that this community of learners is essential for the students to perform effectively and efficiently. They will feel comfortable in the environment and will not be afraid to take risks or ask questions. The teacher will also be a member of this community and will not be seen as unapproachable or as the only leader.
An effective teacher will excite, inspire and motivate students to be active in their learning, investigate new areas of knowledge and make connections to future learning (Whitton et al 2010). When a teacher is successful, their students are motivated, mutually respectful and ready to build on their knowledge and solve real-world problems. To be a teacher of value, one must have many skills and qualities to cater for a diversity of learners and their individual development; this includes many personal traits that are noticed students.
When thinking of a philosophy of teaching, four major issues need to be considered. Those issues are one’s views on education, the role of the teacher, teaching and learning, and on the children. This is something that someone entering the teaching profession needs to give serious thought to and realize the importance that this will hold in the future.
