This Parent- Child Learning Experience was a great one for me because I love helping children succeed in fun ways when it comes to education. The two families that I worked with was a joy and the best part is that I have the honor of severing thesis families on a daily basis.
The first family that I was able to sever was Nayeli and her mother Esmeralda. Nayeli is a four year old Hispanic preschooler. The classroom that she is in is a G.S.R.P, Head start blended classroom. Nayeli’s mother is from Mexico and was very happy when I let her know I was going to use her child for my class assignment because she has concerns about areas of her child learning. The games I came up with to help Nayeli is Strawberry Vine and Shape Bingo. The strawberry vine game is a game that will help the child with her beginning sounds of the alphabet A-Z. The parent main goal was to have her child know how to sound out the letters of the alphabet because she wants her child to speak clearly in the english langue. The game is respectful of the family because I did the game around the mother’s interest and the child’s likes. Nayeli loves strawberries, while at school she is always in the house area making strawberry cake and ice-cream. With that being said, the way this learning experience is beneficial for this particular child is because she loves strawberries and will learn the beginning sounds of the alphabet while using what she loves. Strawberries Vine promotes learning by demonstrate and initial understanding of letter sounds and relationships. The Race Car Numbers game is a game that will help the child with his numbers one through twelve. The parent goal was to have her child know his number when he seen them in number from or in objects to be ready for Kindergarten. The game is respectful of the family because I did the game around the mother’s interest and the child’s likes. Jaiden is infatuated with cars and the color red. While at school he plays in the Block Area with friends playing car races, or building a garage for the cars. When he goes to the House Area he makes cookies into cars. With that being said, the way this learning experience is beneficial for this particular child is because he loves cars so I made a game that would interest the child in two ways by the love are cars and the color red. As I stated before he likes playing with his friends in school with cars also knowing that Jaiden has an older brother at home that also like cars, I made a game that he can play with him at home along with parent. Race Car Numbers game promotes learning by demonstrating concepts of numbers sense by using one-to-one correspondence. Dietze & Kashin (2012) explain the importance of engaging families when they state “Including the input of others is essential in a reflective practice and families have a right to be included” (p.411). In one of my placements I saw the positive impact that including a parent had on a young boy when his mother came in to read a story to the. The boy’s self-esteem seemed to increase and could be seen in the way that he beamed the whole time she was there. This experience highlighted to me the importance of family involvement in an early childhood program. These three highlighted statements all reflect values that are important to me and which are important parts of my practice.

The intervention that I chose for this assignment is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. The intention of article that I examined, as it related to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, was to “examine Parent-Child Interaction Therapy’s effectiveness for increasing positive parenting skills, reducing children’s behavior problems, reducing parents’ stress, and improving the parent-child relationship with a sample of children typically considered in need of attachment-focused treatment.” (Allen, Timmer, Urquiza, 2014, pg. 334). Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based practice in the treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders for young children. This family centered treatment approach emphasizes on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. During PCIT, therapists coach parents via one-way mirror while they interact with their child. The therapist teaches the caregiver strategies that will promote positive behaviors in children who have disruptive or externalizing behavior problems (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 1). The use of live- coaching helps the parent gain strategies in the moment, and allows the therapist to see the different dynamics of the parent-child relationship.
I have chosen to do my case-study at a childcare center in Framingham. This center is owned by Staples Headquarters and run by childcare company Bright Horizons. They currently have 196 children enrolled which includes the following programs of Infants, Toddlers, Preschool, Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten. A vast majority of the children who attend this school have two working parents with college degree and a good career. Most families are Caucasian and a good majority are of Indian descent, all in all there are many diverse families that apart of this school. Parents of children who work at Staples enroll their children to this school because they received a discounted rate in addition to a great education. Families
The stimulations were really eye opening. I was able to see through the eyes of a child with a learning disability in different areas. I always understood that children who have learning disabilities learned differently, but I didn’t imagine how extreme the difference could be. The problems were hard for me and became frustrating. I now know firsthand how frustrating it can be for students who have learning disabilities in different areas. It’s amazing what extra time or shorter questions can do to help increase understanding. I realize that some things that come naturally to me may be extremely difficult for someone who learns differently. As a new teacher, I will make sure to teach children strategies and develop assignments that increase student understanding.
As a mean to supporting family engagement and child’s learning, it is crucial that programs implement strategies for developing partnerships with families. But do the children benefit from effective family engagement? Family engagement pertains to all young children across ethnic backgrounds and early childhood education programs. Parents from diverse backgrounds, when given direction, can become more engaged with their children. Family Engagement is important for young children’s skill. The skills include literacy, cognitive, math, and social development. When the families engage in their children’s education with the help of other educator’s assistance, this supports the early childhood learning, which is a very critical part to success
Parent involvement is critical in the education of a child. I feel as the parents and teachers should be partners in the education process. Being a source of encouragement and a resource for a child throughout their education is important in helping a child succeed to their full potential.
I did my parent-child observation at a restaurant in Batesville Indiana. I went to a small family owned place called Wagner’s. I did my observation over Thanksgiving break after my family cut our Christmas tree down. This occurred on Saturday November 28th around 6pm. This is a place that I am relatively familiar with. I have been going there with my family every year since I was a young child. It is a pretty small restaurant. While one side has a bar, the other side is more family oriented. It is a child friendly place that has a small area that toddlers and young kids can play. It has coloring books and small toys.
