My stepfather suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury over twenty years ago. Growing up observing the daily limitations of living life with a disability, I have a unique understanding of the trials and tribulations of an individual with limited mobility. My interest in engineering has encouraged me to imagine a mechanical device that would assist a person with such limited mobility. Given funding for a small engineering project meant to improve life for a family member, I would seek to invent a device to aid my stepfather in performing common everyday tasks. They often take their body’s ability to move normally for granted. A person’s biomechanics are essential to everyday life, without being able to move properly one cannot perform everyday tasks. Unfortunately, there are people who are not able to do so and face many hardships in their life and may be in a lot of pain. Therefore, these people seek professional assistance to help them regain their ability to function normally. Usually, they end up in the care of a physical therapist and his assistant. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapist assistants “help patients who are recovering from injuries, illnesses, and surgeries regain movement and manage pain.” There is a lot to being a physical therapist, the duties the job requires, the schooling needed to become one, and how much the job pays.
It is of utmost importance that these devices involve little or no disturbance to its user’s ordinary life and subsequently has many positive effects on their daily activities. There are several principles that form the foundation of universal design, which is defined as “an alternate path to accessible products or services, […] that have features that enable a person with a disability to use the product or service, whether by itself or in conjunction with assistive technology” (Tobias, 2003).Thus the main purpose of universal design is to make products usable to the greatest number of people, without the use of specially designed equipment (Connell, Jones, Mace, et al, 1997). Not all books labeled “children’s literature” were specifically written for children, they were labeled that way by publisher, editors or even the public. Who picks out what their child reads? Parents or guardians do, so books meant for children have to appeal to adults too. Therefore you really cannot define “children’s literature” as something a child reads because a lot of time an adult picks out a book they like and they read it, either to their children, classroom, or even children in their day care. What I pick to read to a first grader would not necessarily be what I would read to a kindergartener. So I think we should not really define children’s literature per say but just use our own judgment on what we deem appropriate for children of different ages.
In life, people are sometimes granted with unfortunate, troubling situations. In some of these circumstances, people lose the ability to complete daily tasks such as brushing their teeth, going to the restroom, getting dressed, doing the dishes, and so on (Choices360). When people get caught here, they need a great quantity of help, and not help from just anybody. Victims of these circumstances could use someone to help them learn skills either for a short period of time while they are gaining back strength from a surgery or an injury, or for a long period of time during which they may be physically and/or mentally disabled. Luckily, there are professionals out there to help people with these conditions; they are known as occupational therapists.
