With breathtaking views, cold crisp air, and singing wind, I sat there surrounded by nature's beauty, realizing it's time to go home. It’s been a few months since I emerged from the Alaskan wilderness. I think to myself quite frequently how peaceful living can be when independent, but living can be much more. Life itself stems from the relationships and interconnections between souls and as I returned from the isolated wilderness, my new destiny was formed and my goal was to reconnect my relationships and to help change society rather than run from it. He looked like he saw a ghost when I decided to reappear, he viewed me as someone returning from a world war. When we began conversing and reconnecting, I discovered he looked at me with a mixture of relief and confusion. He never thought I would come back, not try to reconnect with society and make a change. He was like a father figure to me when I was most needed and before seeing him I had one question repeated in the back of my mind that was, can I still claim the same after all that has occurred? I remembered his advice before leaving, "When you forgive, you love." And when you love, God’s light shines upon you" (Krakauer 57). Reminiscing on his words, this journey has taught me the existence of forgiveness, not just for others, but for myself. Our thin bond, though stretched by time and distance, remains intact, and is now colored by the newfound understanding that family isn't just about blood, but rather the connections that are held within the hard tests of time and spirit. I made sure to reassure him that his light was not wasted on me, but that I have let forgiveness open a path and now choose to accept the love I had so hardly rejected
