There are many people who influence our lives over time, but fewer mean more than the individuals hero. Growing up, my friends and I would idolize star athletes and movie stars, simply because we wanted to be one of them. As time passed and I grew older, I found out what a real hero was. My father seemed to fit that title well. My father has every quality necessary for that of a heroic individual. From teaching me how to play sports, to teaching me the ropes of being a man, he has had an impact on every part of my life. I believe that a hero is someone who can have a great amount of influence on a person or society as a whole.
As a kid, my dad introduced me to football and I ended up falling in love with it. He always stresses that it is important to chase my dreams and never give up on anything, no matter how tough the situation may be. A lot of people’s definition of a hero is someone with a cape and supernatural abilities to do incredible things, but my hero wears normal clothes and doesn't have any super powers. He is one person I can almost count on for anything, and I am lucky ...
Recently, students of Olympian High School have stumbled upon the question, "What is a hero?" In the school's 2013 Young Minds Essay Contest, students are expected to consider universal concerns and ideas. Many times when people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, and many other Marvel characters who display unattainable superpowers. However, heroes are prevalent throughout the world. A hero can be anyone who has the desire to help others, brave in dangerous situations, and does not look at exterior gain from helping others.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
Upon hearing that this topic was about heroes, my mind became flooded with ideas and concepts. Family members, historical figures and celebrities had all come to mind. However, this person was the first name that came to mind. This man, depending on your prospective, is either a hero or a villain. To many, he and his qualities are basically the definition of a hero. He has a no-quit attitude, a passion, and a fire in his heart. He has the heart and soul of a true warrior and champion. He has never run, he has fought through the down times, the lows, to achieve greatness, and reach those highs, those great moments. This man is a rare find in this world, nobody will ever be like him. He has a killer instinct, or “Mamba Mentality”, and that is
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
Heroes are found everywhere in the world. They are seen in movies, on television, in books, and in reality. A hero can be anyone, from a friend to a fictional character. To be considered a hero, one must make selfless sacrifices, develop and learn, overcome challenges and temptations, and ultimately present their known world with a gift of any kind. Homer’s
Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.” -Brodi Ashton. This shines true but is overlooked in today's society . A hero in today's society clashes with the genuine meaning of hero. A hero is someone who is sacrificial, selfless, and modest. They may change a little bit depending on the society's values. Some heroes throughout history are Odysseus, Stephen Kumalo,
The word hero as defined as an “individual who has the courage of conviction to perform feats that benefit the general populace, acts as a soldier of virtue, and has an altruistic spirit that urges him or her to act against evil and defend the greater good at all costs, even sacrificing his own well-being or life.” (Harrison 2). Although heroes can come in any shape and size they are commonly found in stories we read, movies we watch, or people we look up to. We do not think about it much but even our own life is made up of many hero’s journeys. We never realize that our hardships and how we overcome them is exactly what a Hero’s Journey is about and why we relate to and enjoy these stories so much.
