Admittedly, after reading the homework assignment, I find myself with a slightly different perspective on ethics. Although I don't consider myself completely inept within the world of ethics, like many, I find plenty of room for improvement and further edification. In any case, after organizing and selecting my guiding values, I found myself wondering why I favored certain ones over others. Throughout life, my ethical proclivities have been formed through a myopic view of black and white, or a right and wrong construct. Nevertheless, when making decisions, I sincerely try to keep my guiding values in mind. For the most part, I find these values easy to follow with minimal internal conflict. Although I do not profess innocence, no one is perfect, myself included, but I do attempt to apply a set of core values to every situation in life. Occasionally, I find my values in conflict with others; though I think conflict is a healthy and an inevitable fact of life. On the other hand, when conflict challenges the veracity of one's core values, trouble can rapidly ensue. Often, conflict resolution is straightforward and easily remedied. Apparently, we don't all share the same values, and some values are simply not compatible with others. With that said, resolving conflict requires an open mind and an evaluation of one's own values. Depending on the priority and importance of one's values, a compromise could prevail or may, unfortunately, lead to an unavoidable impasse. Still, most situations require some form of compromise, barring a trade-off of one's core values, a negotiation is preferred and is usually in the best interest of the majority. The thought process and guiding values of others can sometimes challenge our own beliefs; thus, bringing into question the legitimacy of one's own values. While I'm convinced that the necessary groundwork for morality is innate, the introduction of new ideas and values brought on by a constructive dialogue can add substance to our depository of knowledge and resources. This indispensable discourse can uncover new angles for increased understanding resulting in greater conflict resolution.
