Throughout my life, I have had my fair share of noteworthy and formative experiences, shaping me into the person I am today in every aspect of my life. However, the experience that has had the greatest impact on my educational and personal development was when I was denied an opportunity by my teachers and, instead of backing down, taught myself and succeeded the next year.
At the end of seventh grade, my math teachers reviewed the test scores and grades of each student and made a decision that they would allow two boys to go to the high school to learn geometry the next year. Initially, I was devastated and confused by having not be chosen; I was a strong student in many areas, but especially in math. Upon beginning my first year of high school and my first geometry class, I quickly realized that I already knew all of the information in our text book, confirming my suspicions, I took the textbook home and found that I was familiar with the information in ten of the eleven total chapters. With a renewed sense of confidence, I talked to our advanced learning coordinator, a trusted advisor and old friend, and my guidance counselor. While the counselor believed it would be impossible for me to be placed in a more advanced math course, I discussed possible method of placement with my other advisor. I was nervous because I knew that I would be capable of going this route, but I the feeling of concern was stronger because I haven’t had performed very well in my fourth year so far. It’s very surprising to be honest. If I rewind my life to the very beginning of junior year, I would have never suspected that I would encounter multiple hardships one after another, each excessively worse than the last. Yes, junior year was extremely tough domestically and socially but little did I know that my horrid problems at home would affect me academically. Undeniably it was my will power and my strong belief in never giving up which steered my grades and my life to the straight path and made me realize that mistakes happen in life for a reason, they happen so we can learn from them, so we can share our story with others and help them avoid the hardships we encountered. When I reminisce at my junior year, I don’t extract sadness or failure, I see the rejuvenation and the revival of a talented individual who encountered a slight obstacle on the road of life.
At one point I came to the conclusion that I’m either going to fail, go to summer school, or go to a school that I didn't want to attend. I felt so disappointed in myself because I knew that I could've done better. So then one day I told myself, “I can do this”. I then started to study more than I usually did, I turned in all of my missing work and my present work, and I also took an after school tutoring class
During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
My father had fallen ill and was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Coming from a Latino family, I knew it was serious. Men don't go to the doctor unless they really feel like they're on their death bed. And this was my father's turn. But, he is not to blame for my failures because every night that he would call me, his first two questions were always "How was your day?" followed by "Did you do all your homework mija?" This deep dive into self-knowledge occurred when I received my first progress report for second semester Ninth Grade Algebra. To say that I was put into a space of shock and awe is an understatement; I was outraged. I was completing all my assignments and turning in homework, but my poor test grades were obliterating my grade.
Adversity has been part of my life since elementary. That is when my father and mother divorced, and I was thrown for being responsible for my non- English speaking mother and a sister two years younger than me. The Math Olympiad contest consisted of five intensive five-problem tests, given over a period of four months. However, the difficulties I was experiencing during my first year of high school made me realize that it was imperative to meticulously scrutinize the way I studied in order to ameliorate and become the student I used to be. Additionally, I became aware that my ability to speak English was affecting me, but later I came to the conclusion that if this was a determining factor in my performance in class, I had to challenge myself by engaging in more rigorous courses. As time went on, however, due to the fact that I was surrounded by students I considered to be far ahead, I felt very intimidated by my advanced classes. Furthermore, I became aware that some of my teachers from the advanced placement classes seemed to doubt my ability to perform at the level expected, just by hearing my accent. To be condemned to failure simply because I did not speak English the same way my fellow classmates did, was a terrible sinking feeling. Attending Early College High School has changed the way I feel about education because now I prioritize my academics. I don’t let any barriers in my life interfere with my academics. At ECHS, I have not faced many difficulties, but one difficult challenge was when I got a terrible grade in my AP Biology class. I was devastated to see that on my progress report card I had a D+. I had never had such a low grade in any class. Many thoughts were running in my head, including the thought that I was never going to make it into college because of that grade. One of my hardest adversities took place around one and a half years ago. One of my teachers had found Gatton Academy, and told me about it, and, eventually, sent my parents to look into it. Soon we discovered that Gatton was a capital opportunity for me. In fact, as I had finished the majority of the math classes at the school, they thought it a stupendous idea to advance me a couple of grades. As I needed my freshman grades for Gatton, they brought me to the ninth grade. My grades were average, but I scored high enough to please my parents. I lived in a wonderland of games, toys and friends until a certain examination came my way. It was my first real math exam that changed everything. With ups and downs in my career and my personal life, I have become stronger, more modest and grateful for all the chances that life offered. I have always been one of the top 10 students in class. When I graduated from high school, forty years ago, I had no idea that mathematics would play such a large role in my future. Like most people learning mathematics, I continue to learn until it became too hard, which made me lose interest. Failure or near failure is one way to put a stop to learning a subject, and leave a lasting impression not worth repeating. Mathematics courses, being compulsory, are designed to cover topics. One by one, the topics need not be important or of immediate use, but altogether or cumulatively, the topics provide or point to a skill, a mastery of mathematics.
