As a hopeful enrollee of SUNY Empire State College, I am excited to embark on my journey of lifetime learning by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Community and Human Services. Although my college days will come to an end, my knowledge will keep thriving with a hunger to learn more. So, I will use what I have learned to better my career and the people I serve.
Before I was even old enough to attend elementary school, I had already figured out what I wanted to be in life. I knew I wanted to take after my mother. She worked in a direct care facility serving individuals with disabilities. Seeing how gleeful this career made my mother, made me wish that one day I would follow in her footsteps. So when I walked the stage at high school graduation,

I have a volunteer background as well as an employment background pertaining to my field of study. In 2011, I was a volunteer at the Root Farm where we would provide children with special needs with equine therapies. Equine therapy is widely known for promoting physical, emotional and occupational growth. Also, it helps to give the children a sense of trust seeing as how they’re on the back of a 1,000 pound animal. In 2012, I volunteered at Elder Haven which was an adult daycare. We provided assistive care to elderly adults and their families. Any chance to help people out gave me a great sense of purpose. So, throughout my high school career, I volunteered at the Special Olympics, which were hosted yearly at Canastota High School. I’d be assigned to a buddy for the day where they would complete their events they had chosen. We of course would cheer them on with such excitement in that this was something to be proud of! My employment side of my experiences consists of ARC and ARISE. I’ve been lucky enough to serve and work alongside some amazing people. Whether it was at ARC working in a house or at ARISE in the community, seeing an individual master their goal brings great pride. Something they’ve worked so hard at to finally achieve is not only rewarding to them, but to those around them as well. These job opportunities have made me realize this career field is my
I remember a time in my life when I would always play with little children. At that point, at the age of six or seven, I decided to become a pediatrician or a kindergarten teacher. When I started high school, I started feeling stressed out because of the pressure that I was doing to myself to reach my goal of becoming a pediatrician. I could hardly focus on the topic we would have during class because I would be thinking about my future as a pediatrician. With the help of my friends, they helped me overcome the obstacles that I had. The more I thought about what profession I wanted to be, I thought about how much I loved working and dealing with computers. My friends and cousins told me that I should and can be what ever I wanted, and that helped me decide to major in computer engineering at San Jose State University. So you see when it comes down to life, dreams are not the only thing that can keep men going, friendships, pets and companionships can do the same.
Throughout my life, I had continually believed that once I graduated college, I would engage in an action filled career. I wanted to be a police officer, a firefighter or even an undercover FBI agent. I had planned on studying criminal justice, and I took numerous high school classes based on it. Nevertheless, my plan transformed the summer between my junior and senior years. It was my grandma that influenced me to transform my criminal justice plan into a nursing plan. For most of my life, I may not have acknowledged exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up, but I did know that I sought to help people.
It has taken me a long time to come to this point but I am now sure of what I want to do, and what I need to do to achieve my goals. Had I not gone through the countless jobs and educational paths, I would have never come to the one that I finally know I will love and it will benefit me as a person, and benefit my family financially.
Growing up I've always known I wanted to help people when I got older. During the summer of 2014, my aunt who is a pediatric physical therapist allowed me to shadow her at work and I realized that is what I wanted to do. My aunt has told me countless stories about how she's helped the lives of children and their families. One story that will always stick out in my mind is how she helped a child with developmental delays how to walk. I have several younger cousins who are thankfully well and healthy, and I couldn't imagine them struggling to do simple things like walking. At her work, all the physical therapists put together a cheerleading program for the kids and I was able to help them with their final performance. Being a cheerleader and
It all began when I started volunteering in Los Angeles, with my mother at Asian Pacific Health Care Clinic. Asian Pacific Health Care Clinic is a clinic for low-income families who were in need of vaccinations and other health care services. One day my mom received a phone call from the clinic and asked me to go volunteer with her. Since that day, I would have never guessed that it will impact my decision in pursuing my career as a nurse. I was assigned to help patients fill out vaccination forms, translate verbally, and assist the nurses who were in need of my help. I noticed the joy on each patient’s face once they were finished their vaccinations, and it made me happy to know I put a smile on people 's face after their vaccinations. Since that day, I have grown a passion for volunteering and helping others. Another factor that drew me to the nursing profession, was when I volunteered at a
There are several populations that interest me however possible preferences include families that deal with domestic abuse and those who are disabled. Working with families that have experienced domestic violence is an interest because in the past I had friends whose family was dealing domestic violence and the impact could clearly in all members of the family. Seeing the difference that was made by those who worked to help their family made this population a preference. Another population that is a possible preference is are those who are disabled. The interest to help those who were disabled started when a faculty called Edelweiss opened. Up to that point there had been no interaction with those who lead different lives than myself. Through the year that was spent volunteering the changes in those that had lessons became obvious. Being able to see the achievements of those who had lessons made it a continued interest. In the past couple of years a new side of this interest was shown. There is someone that is a close friend who is disabled because of seizures who has had trouble with employers. Seeing how she has been treated made it even clearer that this population needs help and has made it a continued interest professionally and personally.
When I got to middle school, people began asking me what I wanted to be when I grow up. I always knew that whatever career I chose to partake in, must involve helping people. Finally, during my senior year of high school, the idea of being a Nurse Practitioner settled in my mind, and I realized that it would be the perfect career for
My interest in social work could date back to senior middle school. When seeing the news reporting primary school students’ life in Guizhou, I found that I have been blessed and I wanted to render back. While everyone was busy preparing for the University Entrance Examination, I tried to persuade all the students and teachers of the third grade to join in donation organized by me to collect clothes and books for children there. I made up my mind to work on it and call for more help. Only when I specialized in Social Work in my undergraduate, did I understand how I can realize my expectations in a systematic manner.
The process of life begins with a wish. Throughout childhood we are constantly asked what we wish to become when we grow up. Usually the answer is a Doctor or Vet. This was my answer as well. Then I became ill and my life suddenly was altered. I became the girl who was gone almost everyday due to an elusive illness. My illness changed who I was and made me want to help others the way I was helped. I wish to become a Nurse. The process of getting there was not easy. I had to deal with tough things such as missing school, working through my illness, and those things led me to my aspirations today.
It was the summer of my sophomore year in high school, and I was sitting down getting ready to select classes for the upcoming school year with my mom. We were sitting at the kitchen table one night that summer tossing around ideas on what I wanted to be and do with my life, and what classes fit what we were talking about. I thought it was the stupidest thing ever and I just wanted to take the easiest classes that good ole Rhinelander High School had to offer, but not with my mom right there. So we got to talking about what I wanted to be. "It was always a dream of mine to be a doctor" I replied to my mom. "Yes I know but with you slouffing off the way you did last year in high school, then you better get your act together, cause grades are very important." she added. I thought to myself "she is just babbling, that’s what she always tells me, but what do I really want to do with my life?" I questioned myself. I then added "I can't see myself being a doctor, and going through all of those hard classes in college, I want to get in and get out with a degree" I added, "Maybe I'll be an accoutant, I did really good in that class, I didn't even get a B on one test or assignment" I replied. Oh did my mom love that idea, "Are you sure?" "Yeah why not, I can give it a shot" I answered in excitement. "Ya know what I really don't know mom, I get confused on what I want to do, I feel like I'm rushing my life so fast that I'm not going to get anything done that I want to get done in my life" I told her.
From a young age, I always knew that I wanted a career that was hands-on with people. My goal as a child was to help people in any way that I could. I originally wanted to be a teacher, however, after working in daycare for six years, I got burnt out on the idea of teaching. Around high school age, I thought that nursing was the next best career for me to have personal interactions with the community in a way that I could make a difference. There are two things in my life that really set my course in becoming a nurse. When I was a freshman in high school, I was rushed to the hospital with a dangerously low oxygen level. I was so close to death, but the nurses worked so hard to provide encouragement and empathy for myself and parents through out the two weeks that I stayed there for. Secondly, last year on September 11, my father was rushed to the hospital, but the doctors and nurses could not save him. It wasn 't the doctors who leant a shoulder to cry on or an empathetic comment, it was the nurses. I decided that I wanted to become the person that uplifted in joyful moments and comforted in distressing
...ch environment filled with opportunity and funding when the time comes. I thank Empire State College for the role that they are playing in this process and hope to complete our relationship with the expected degree and foundation.
I remember when I was a kid, my sister asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I answered simply and surely, I was to be a princess. I look back and laugh at how innocent the answer was. When it came to middle school, I was set on being a therapist; however, once I was in my first session I realized that being therapist wasn’t the right thing. For an entire year, I was lost because I had already set my eyes on the goal, and now it was even farther.
In high school my ideal career seemed to change from day-to-day. I tried working at a fast food restaurant, and ice cream parlor, a day care, but none of these led to any career decisions. I wanted to join the military so I took the ASVAB but I was not confident enough in my ability to make it through basic training so I gave up the idea. I wanted to be an architect so I applied for admission to the CAD program at ITT Technical Institute and was accepted. I was scheduled to start classes on June 12, 1989, but deep down what I truly wanted was to a wife and mother and the idea of getting out of Rantoul, Illinois did not hurt either. My unspoken desire came to the fore when I met my future husband in January of 1989. We were married on June 10, 1989, four days after my high school graduation and two days before I w...
I am also proud that I am active in volunteering. I was the Vice-president of Red Cross Society at school. I participated and organized a lot of events, such as the annual Charity Bazaar and presentations by guest speakers from the city’s Red Cross Society. The thing I 'm proudest of is that the annual Charity Bazaar events were extremely successful and the money we raised was used to help the poor regions of China. As the VP of the RCS, my abilities of organization, creation and communication were greatly improved, my leadership skill was also trained very well. I believe that these abilities would be an important asset in the business
