Client population
There are several populations that interest me however possible preferences include families that deal with domestic abuse and those who are disabled. Working with families that have experienced domestic violence is an interest because in the past I had friends whose family was dealing domestic violence and the impact could clearly in all members of the family. Seeing the difference that was made by those who worked to help their family made this population a preference. Another population that is a possible preference is are those who are disabled. The interest to help those who were disabled started when a faculty called Edelweiss opened. Up to that point there had been no interaction with those who lead different lives than myself. Through the year that was spent volunteering the changes in those that had lessons became obvious. Being able to see the achievements of those who had lessons made it a continued interest. In the past couple of years a new side of this interest was shown. There is someone that is a close friend who is disabled because of seizures who has had trouble with employers. Seeing how she has been treated made it even clearer that this population needs help and has made it a continued interest professionally and personally.
Experience with population
The population of families that have had to deal with domestic abuse is one where I have not had a chance to work with.

...reating action plans with clients. During the internship, one area that is a preferred is client intake and assessments. Working individually with clients is something that is yet to be experienced and learning from those do assessments and intake interviews would be beneficial when entering the social work field. Working with groups and helping to create action plans for clients are both activities that have been covered in class, but they have never been applied in a professional setting. Working with those that have know what is required when making action plans and working with groups will help because there is a certain method and code of behavior expected of a social worker. In order to better serve clients when entering the field having a more complete knowledge of these activities is important and learning from those who have experience will be great help.
Although horse assisted therapy is growing in popularity and supporters, there are those that present valid surface-level arguments against it. The most obvious and basic drawback to an equine aid is the accessibility. Horses are large animals that cannot be easily brought to a patient, unlike other smaller and more popular therapy animals, like dogs (Fundukian). A patient in most situations must be brought to the horse in order to participate in the therapy, and for those with severe impairments this may be too great of a challenge. However, although it is true, the accessibility of horses is an issue, it could easily be solved if the therapy received more support. I also have strong desires to serve others, including underserved populations. While serving at a homeless shelter Bowery Mission, I realized that the homeless usually need more help in health care but have inadequate access and limited medical knowledge. I am interested in working in in underserved areas as well as serving underserved populations because I can maximize my impact by fulfilling their needs.

Core competency one consists of identifying with the social work profession. This core competency relates to the time in my internship. With over nine million types of horses in the United States, the need for quality health care for the horses has never been stronger. It’s certain that more equine veterinarians than ever before will be needed in the years to come to provide the care that owners want for their horses. According to the American Association of equine practitioners (AAEP), nearly half of the equine veterinarians are involved with performance horses(44.8%). The AVMA’S most recent employment survey of 2016 indicated that there were about 3,874 veterinarians in exclusively equine practice, with and additional 4,177 involved in mixed practices.

Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.

My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
It is important because it gives social workers and the agency an opportunity to provide their clients with the necessary services. Lastly, it is important for legal purposes in cases where a subpoena is given to a social worker if they are being sued by their client. A specific topic discussed in chapter 3 that the social work student believes to be important when going into ones field internship is confidentiality. Confidentiality is important because one must understand completely what the guidelines are for confidentiality and the exceptions, including what is appropriate to disclose and what is not appropriate to disclose. With not understanding confidentiality while doing the field internship, the social work student can be sued or even fired for disclosing confidential information. Since before I was born, horses have played an immense part in my life. Plagued with a genetic love of horses, handed down by my mother, it soon became apparent that the future I would lead someday held many opportunities for a career within the equine industry.
Blood rushed through my veins and my heart began to race as the powerful equine athlete beneath me was preparing to run into the arena. Fifteen seconds and three barrels later, my heartbeat began to slow down, tears flooding my eyes, as Lulu’s first run in two years had commenced. After years of rehabilitation, dedication and patience, Lulu was back at it, doing her job. She came out of the arena as if she were on top of the world; her head held high, looking for her reward (a horse treat)! Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart.
