Personally, this semester’s English course has provided me with a new kind of learning experience unlike any other I have attended in the past. After having a taste of what this course is , I no longer dread of having to write essays. I have become more confident with my overall skills as I turn in any work. I have gained a more confident feeling within my overall work as I turn it in. For me, the tools provided have been the key to the overall quality and improvement of my essays. It has motivated me to utilize everything provided and improve my overall work as a writer. I was told “the more you read, the more your writing will improve”, and I do believe this idea to be true. Now, I sit down and number my paragraphs and create bullet points of ideas or concepts within an outline to create a better flow while I write my essays. While I create my writing outline, I take advantage by looking into concepts within paragraphs and add sources to utilize them as evidence for an argument or even to exemplify a situation or idea within a paragraph. This course has also taught me how to properly cite sources, determine credibility, and ways of editing papers. All of these new concepts have contributed into helping me with another one of my courses and I know these techniques will be useful for future courses. I was not aware that my first draft does not always have to be your final draft. By reviewing my essay with a fresh pair of eyes I am now able to catch more errors that would normally be overlooked. To review my paper, I print out a copy and write corrections with a color other than black. With this technique I am able to catch more errors than by rereading my work on a computer screen. Something that I need to work on more as a writer is producing better grammar and creating smoother sentence transitions within essays. I intend on improving and working on these weaknesses by reviewing grammar lists and viewing transitional words or examples that can act as a guide for my
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. The environment made me feel at ease, helping me evolve as a student, and as a person. The environment made me feel at ease, preparing me for future classes. Another large achievement of mine that I displayed in the class, was my ability to talk comfortably with the other students. The variety of group activities we did allowed me to openly speak my opinion, leading to a better overall performance with my work and papers. In general, I like this course because it taught me a lot of great things, such as how to revise the essay in order to make it better. My writing has improved a lot throughout this year, I learned how to organize my essay’s structure, using the transition sandwich to perfect my writing. In the future, I hope to continue developing all the skills that I learned in this English class, and I will continue to go to the Writing Center to ask for help to perfect my writing. However, it is the end of the year, but it does not mean that this is the end of my writing.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Overall this semester, I believe my writing in this course has been one of my strongest areas and I am excited to keep getting better at this skill. With my mother’s help during middle and high school, my papers have improved significantly and now I think I have a firm grasp on writing for various disciplines, but particularly professional settings like social work. I picked up on APA format quickly after doing MLA for several years and it now feels like second nature to me. There are certainly still formatting areas to improve upon and learn more about, but at this stage, I think I am progressing steadily. Thirdly, I am able to find appropriate sources easily to reference in my activity analyses, which is crucial as I advance in the program.
From experiences, I know grade 7s are competitive and active when it comes to games they like. Therefore the activity mustn’t be too boring, static or with no competition. The activity I’ve came up with is called Pass the ball which is related to Hot potato but with a literary twist. So to begin the goal of this game is not to be the one holding the ball at the end and avoid elimination. So basically all that is needed is a ball and to set up the participants sit in a circle, with enough space between each other to pass the ball comfortably and the prefect would be the host or moderator to observe the game and identify ‘It’ and ask the questions.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
John Schwartz’s visit to the class will help me become a better writer because he showed me that I have to start in the middle of an action in my introduction, revise my work until the due date, and add short sentences along with the long sentences in my paragraphs.
When I was I was growing up, I think the first words that I read were “I”, “we”, “the”, “and”, “but” and also started writing these words, too. However, when I improved in my reading and writing, I started to learn more words such as “when”, “where”, “who”, “what”, “when”, and “how”. Over the period of times, I progress in my reading and writing skills not enough that it was proficiency but enough that I was able to understand that I was able to read and write. I was above other students when it came to reading but when it came to my writing skills; I was a little below than an average student. I needed more help than other students; I took EIP from elementary school all the way up until the end of high school.
From my early years I found it extremely strenuous to comprehend and to gain interest while reading and writing. Reading, also writing has always been a challenge; this pushed me towards my interest in math and science. I longed to improve my reading level and my writing skills, but never could. To this day it affects my life, on my ACT scores I achieved a sixteen in English and a twenty in reading while I excelled in math and science scoring twenty-four in both. Reading and writing being life long skills I must progress and improve.
English Composition 2 has been an engaging and interesting class. As an online course, though it was void of face-to-face interaction, it was engaging and consisted of many opportunities to interact. I felt challenged in a subject that I have previously felt confident in. Though I lacked experience in MLA format, I initially felt secure and very prepared to do exceedingly well. I quickly learned that I had significant deficits in my writing abilities. I developed new writing skills including a better understanding of the MLA format, to pay close attention to the format or instructions of the essay, and how to analyze different kinds of writings.
